Long closed motel on NY 97, Pond Eddy, NY. A small hamlet along the Delaware River. The business for the Motel was camping, fishing, hunting, & rafting. Guess there wasn't enough of it to sustain this place.

It's for sale, but run down. All the neon is still on the sign.
Turntable Shopping

This shopping center sits adjacent to the turntable, which is just off frame left. Every time I come to Port Jervis, this shopping complex is something different. It has finally reached the end of the line though, as all the stores are now closed and the place looks abandoned.

In 1990, it was a Kmart.

In 1996, during the steam trips, it was some sort of supermarket.

Newark Paramount Theater

Opened on October 11, 1886 as H.C. Miner’s Newark Theater. It was originally a vaudeville house. Over the years it went through several ownerships before eventually becoming a Paramount theater. Closed on April 1, 1986, the former Paramount Theater still boasts the vertical ‘Paramount’ sign, as well as the ‘Newark’ marquee.

A retail store operates out of the former lobby, however behind the drop ceilings and walls remains much of the old theater, complete with stage area and balcony seating intact.

Pictures of the sadly rotting interior can be found here on Cinematreasures Paramount Theater

Seen in Mcadoo Pennsylvania. Yes, another typical coal mining town. The sign on the window says EST 1906, but I guess Kline's couldn't handle the recession as it looks long closed.

Old work boots adorn the windows.

Large neon blade for Bushberg Brothers Furniture in downtown Newark NJ. The storefront proclaims "Since 1947", but the place looks out of business. Sad.

Downtown Newark, like other large city centers (such as Paterson and Passaic) once contained clusters of large independent retail businesses such as furniture, clothing, jewelers, department stores, etc. Most of these stores are long out of business, killed by big-box chains such as Walmart, Best Buy, Target. Now all that remains is a collection of dollar stores, convenience quicky marts, cell phone stores, and empty storefronts.

This has to be seen on black.

Repeating a shot I took in June, only this time at night, the Old Kearny Generating Station is framed against the Pulaski Skyway. When the station opened in 1925 it was the largest electric generating station in New Jersey. The plant was fully retired in 2006.

The dark foreboding structure sits quietly along the shore of the Hackensack River.

I also have to say, it was real creepy being here at 11:30pm, all alone at the end of an industrial street. I was expecting the Boogie Man to come jumping out of some dark corner, or the Creature from 20,000 Fathoms to come out of the river! But it was worth it.

Closed in 2006, the Kearny Generating Station sits dark along the shore of the Hackensack River. When the station opened in 1925 it was the largest electric generating station in New Jersey.

Although the old station sits abandoned, immediately behind it is a newer gas turbine generating station known as a "peaker". Peaking stations switch on and off as needed, only generating electricity and consuming resources when the demand requires it.

Unlike the old coal/steam fired plant, which once started and online, must run continually, even if the electricity it is generating isn't specifically needed at the moment.

Bethlehem Steel

jeffs4653 posted a photo:

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation (1857–2003), based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was once the second-largest steel producer in the United States, after Pittsburgh PA-based US Steel. After a decline in the U.S. steel industry and management problems leading to the company's 2001 bankruptcy, the company was dissolved and the remaining assets sold to International Steel Group in 2003. In 2005, ISG merged with Mittal Steel, ending US ownership of the assets of Bethlehem Steel.

Bethlehem Steel was also one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world and one of the most powerful symbols of American industrial manufacturing leadership. Bethlehem Steel's demise is often cited as one of the most prominent examples of the U.S. economy's shift away from industrial manufacturing, its inability to compete with cheap foreign labor, and its traits of business management that value short-term benefit over long-term strategy.

The site of the company's former main plant in Bethlehem, PA, is now home to an arts and entertainment district called SteelStacks. The plant's 5 blast furnaces have been left standing and serve as the back drop for this new campus. The site currently features a contemporary performing arts center, called the ArtsQuest Center, at the west end and the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, to the east of the site. Future attractions include a free music pavilion, Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks.

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation (1857–2003), based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was once the second-largest steel producer in the United States. After a decline in the U.S. steel industry and management problems leading to the company's 2001 bankruptcy, the company was dissolved.

The site of the company's former main plant, in Bethlehem, PA, is now home to an arts and entertainment district. The plant's 5 blast furnaces have been left standing and serve as the back drop for this new campus.

A blast furnace is a type of metallurgical furnace used for smelting to produce industrial metals, generally iron.

In a blast furnace, fuel and ore are continuously supplied through the top of the furnace, while air (sometimes with oxygen enrichment) is blown into the bottom of the chamber, so that the chemical reactions take place throughout the furnace as the material moves downward. The end products are usually molten metal and slag phases tapped from the bottom, and flue gases exiting from the top of the furnace.

During the company's heyday, steel for the following structures was manufactured here:

Bridges:

George Washington Bridge
Golden Gate Bridge

Buildings:

Chrysler Building
Madison Square Garden
Rockefeller Center
Alcatraz Island

Dams:

Bonneville Dam

Grand Coulee Dam
Hoover Dam
