We were on a cruise to Kumarakum from Ernakulam (Marine Drive). It was a perfect day- blue skies, a playful gust, the gently rocking waters, greenery all around, loads of fun and merriment to accompany. This person too was on a trip of his own to Kollam, paddling away in his canoe (‘Vanzhi’). Our paths crossed and he asked for a ride alongside our boat, for as long as our paths converged. He sat in his canoe, tied to our boat for almost the entirety of our trip, keeping to himself yet interacting with us through his folk songs. We parted ways but captured the moment forever.
