Round Block

The simple shapes used in this classic Greek architecture make the buildings look so elegant. From my childhood memories of playing with building blocks, I see a cylinder, a block and a triangle.

Ok, there's a few embellishments that spice it up but cut to the bare essentials, the architecture really is that simple. Gorgeous :)

Fuel Terminal Railway

The disused rail track that used to carry cargo between different parts of the oil terminal in Cattedown Wharves, Plymouth. The area to the left and up ahead is the Conoco Plymouth Terminal.
When I saw this scene I was inspired by the way everything is about function, the total lack of any attempt at aesthetics. And yet there is a certain sharp, noire beauty to the overall scene.

Inquisitive Sheep on Dartmoor

I first noticed these sheep as I was walking around and, eventually, they were close enough for me to pay attention to them. As I did, talking to them all the while in a low encouraging voice, I got great eye contact and this lovely little interaction. A genuine look of curiosity from the front sheep, while the back one, though a little unsure, was still interested enough in what was happening to throw this backward glance.

(An observation from looking at the back sheep... when all you have are cloven hooves, you learn to put up with stuff that otherwise might drive you mad!)

Wild Dartmoor Pony

One of the Dartmoor "wild" ponies that run free on the moors.
In the clear, crisp light, even with a low sun, this came out a bit harsh. I'm pleased with the way it turned out after some work in the digital darkroom.

What scene is about to be played out and where are the actors? The shady, fedora-hatted character who will materialise from the shadows. Maybe he will hand over a string-wrapped parcel to a stunningly beautiful blond, one so obviously out of place in this seedy end of town?

Felixstowe Seafront

Just like penguins huddled together for warmth, these beach huts hunker down, over-wintering and dreaming of the summer to come.

You can almost hear the swishing sounds as the seawater from the last wave drains through the shingle. A million clicking, clashing pebbles whispering their gossip on the tide of the wind.

Pilgrims Point

Pilgrims Point on Plymouth's Barbican. Taken from the lowest of the unsubmerged Mayflower Steps when a spring tide was out.

The original Mayflower Steps were to the west of here, (behind and over my left shoulder from where I took the shot) in an area now built on.

As the waterfront use expanded over the centuries since the Mayflower set sail, they have shifted to where they are now.

Ruined Church Interior

This is the inside of the Trinity Church at the top of the hill in Buckfastleigh, Devon.

Before the Church was destroyed by fire, I used to go caving close by. Sometimes I'd pay a visit to the church for a moment's quiet reflection.

Another view of Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh. I wanted a shot that included a prominent cross, it being a church and all.

I found this and although it was darker than I'd wanted, I think it has worked out better this way. Some of the lichens were really bright and made exposure quite difficult.

Anyway, I hope you like it :)

Church and Graveyard

Buckfastleigh Holy Trinity Church. Known locally as "The Church At The Top Of The Hill", it was destroyed by fire in 1992 by vandals.

Even so, it's still used for occasional open air services amongst the ruins.

In this corner stands the ruin of the Chapel, with the seeming slow advance on its space by the tombstones long since halted (unless you visit after midnight on a moonless night!)

Totnes Mill Leat Boat

The Mill Leat at the back of The Plains, Totnes. This part is tidal and with the tide out the boat looks rather forlorn.

I took a close-up shot of the boat, painter and ladder, as I liked the way they they seem to be telling their own little story.
A landscape version didn't work so well, diluting the impact.

Looking across rolling downs of Wiltshire, about 15 miles west of Salisbury. Hope I managed to capture the airiness of this beautiful part of the UK.
I guess, having not long passed by Stonehenge on the way back from my weekly commute, this particular viewpoint gave me echoes of those famous standing stones.

Holiday Inn M4 J4

The sky was really good on this day and I really wanted to capture something of the dramatic architecture of this imposing building. It took a lot of walking around the grounds of the hotel to find a point of view that worked well.

The trees around the edges of the grounds gave a pleasing triangular framing to complement the triangle shape caused by the deep perspective approach to the building itself. And with the way the sky and clouds were working, there were some great shadows playing across the building, too.
