Moody Duffus Castle

This weeks Project 52 theme is "Architecture".

I decided pop over to Duffus Castle to get a shot as the sky was constantly changing from sunny blue to raining cats and dogs.

Wide Angle Descent

Out with Andy Lochhead getting some downhill mountain biking sports photo's.
Andy was a great sport and very happy to do certain parts over till we got the shot.

This was shot with a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens and my Speedlite flash on a tripod set off to the side on a wireless trigger at 1/32 power.

Starry Starry Night

Ventured out hoping to catch the Northern Lights but I was much too early (11:30pm) as they only appeared at 02:30am.

Decided not to waste the chance to get some pictures of Duffus Castle as the sky was extremely clear.

This is a 20 second exposure with the moon three quarters full and providing plenty of illumination for the castle.

Duffus Castle at Night

Tonights star trail location was Duffus castle in Moray.

With the moon behind us and a clear night we set up at the bottom of the hill looking up at this magnificent ruins.

The large streak you can see is actually Jupiter making its way through the shot.

Once again we battled with the dreaded condensation due to dropping temps and cloud cover moving in from Lossiemouth.

This was a 95 minute exposure over 190x 30 second exposures and compiled in StarstaX.

Taking a slightly different look on this big tree that was beside Loch Na Bo my Manfrotto Pro190B tripod allowed me to get in close and have a slightly longer exposure than usual due to the waning light.

This curious fella kept coming to see what I was up to whilst setting up for a picture of the frozen Loch Na Bo.

Luckily he stayed in place long enough for me to swap to my Tamron 70-300 lens and catch this picture of him.

Celtic Cross Star Trail

A very clear night at Cabrach in Moray.

Arrived in the old village which is strange as its mostly abandoned.
Had a quick walk round but decided to use this marvelous Celtic Cross in the graveyard by the old church for a focal point.

Decided to try out getting a static star picture so before doing my star trail I aimed upwards and got 10 seperate 8 second exposures at ISO 800.

Then I compiled them into a program called Deep Sky Stacker.

Is It Me Or Is The World Cracking Up

Best viewed Large

On Cooper Park in Elgin, Moray today and the duck pond was still partially frozen after the cold snap last week.

This tree that stands on the island in the middle of the pond was nicely reflected in the slowly cracking ice. I grabbed my pic then flipped it and added a vignette in Adobe Lightroom to mask the edge of the pond that seemed to get in the way.

Mucking about with the lensalike and a high power torch. Wee Stu (the left) was in the Hiyuken pose whilst being light painted then Craig (right) made the fireball before finally getting in position for his lightsabre defend position.

Like a V24 but cheaper

I've been after a V24 Lenser for ages now but due to the fact Lenser don't make them anymore and they seem to go for £200+ on eBay I decided to find an alternative.

This particular alternative cost £7.50 (on sale) and I reckon does just as good a job.
The ISO was set to 800 for this shot and f stop 7.1 over 42 seconds.

Green Fire?

Little Stu's turn at fire spinning.
Unfortunately the chain snagged on his thumb and he had to drop it mid spin. Still got some good sparks so I decided to play with the colours in Lightroom and got this nice green hue to the sparks.

Star Trail Over Duffus

Whilst at Duffus Castle in Moray I did a quick 15 minute exposure to get the star trail effect.

Compiled again in StarstaX software from 30 individual 30 second exposures and one black shot.

The moon lit the castle up perfectly but unfortunately I didn't catch the north star in the shot.

Duke of Gordon Monument

Up on the top of Ladyhill overlooking the Moray town of Elgin is the Duke of Gordon Monument.

The monument was erected in memory of George, 5th (and last) Duke of Gordon by public subscription.

Following a bequest by Alexander Craig of Craigton and members of the Morayshire Farmers Club, the statue was added in 1855, designed by Handyside Ritchie and carved by Thomas Goodwillie of Elgin.

The Duke is portrayed wearing the robes of Chancellor of Marischall College, Aberdeen.

Fallen Leaves of Autumn

Lighthouse Star Trail take 2

Another trip to the Lossiemouth/Covesea lighthouse on a clear night. This time with fellow photographer Kieren Brenchley who was keen to have a practice with some night photo's.

A relatively short exposure of 50 minutes due to cloud cover moving in matched with the battle of condensation on the lens as the temperature dropped.
