The nearest table mountains to Africa, Ben Bulben, has been the clearest sign that you are in County Sligo since my childhood.

Never been on top, but lots of my mates have been. Apparently, there's a tin mine up there and an abandoned village which serviced it. There was a cable car which lowered miners down the far side into the Horseshoe Valley, but nothing remains of that bar the ruined station house.

This is a black and white version of an earlier picture, I needed some sun but somehow I ended up stripping all colour out of it.

This little curve out into the lake actually is on Beezie's Island, one of it's many little coves and inlets.

Beezies Island panorama

Spotted this promontory on the island while out on the lake. I fancied taking a look from there.

Beezie's is full of wonderful little spots. You can see her ruined cottage peeking through the lowest point of the trees there. It's a near perfect spot, you wish the bbq brigade would take their rubbish home though.

Church Island - visited

Finally got to hit the lake today. First time.

A kind lend of a boat and engine had us all out, picnic in tow.

We visited Church Island and Beezie's... loved the whole experience.

These plants were sprouting on the rear wall of the church on the island, they were just glowing in the shade... eerie.

Another of a tourist on top of Knocknarea. She was busy photographing a friend who was putting her rock on the tippity top of the cairn.

I did consider cropping this to a vertical format but there's something about the vista and the width working against her neat vertical stance that I like.

This is a quick grabbed shot while I was in traffic at end of day in Sligo. I liked the bird at the tip of the building and pulled out the camera.

Then the plane obligingly flew into view.

A glorious cold bright day faded into a beautiful golden evening. Walkers, surfers, helicopters, light aircrat, dogs, horses, all in evidence as Sligo took to the beach.

Colgagh Lake

Colgagh is a small lake on the road to Sligo. A little beauty, everyone slows and cranes their neck when they first drive by.

My Dad painted many views of Lough Gill but this was to be his next subject for a painting, he'd taken photos and sketched it but passed away before he could take a brush to canvas.
