Unveiled in 1992, this memorial depicts a nurse comforting a wounded soldier. The role of nurses and the sacrifices they made during the war is recognised in the strength and dignity shown in this artwork.

The sculpture is credited to Artbusters.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL
Adelaide, South Australia
Dedicated to those who gave their lives in the service of their country during the Great War 1914-1918

The National War Memorial has immense statuary significance.

Dealing first with the front, or obverse, the figure within the arch represents the spirit of Duty, bearing in its hands a sword shaped as a cross, the symbol of battle and sacrifice.

This figure is the vision seen by the group standing on the stage in front. This group, symbolical of the youth of the community, is represented as catching the first glimpse of the vision which appears above the altar of the shrine of sacrifice.

Each member of the group - the student, the farmer and the girl - affected by the impulse, instinctively drops the emblems of craft and turns to the vision as it becomes clearer. The reverse represents the passive, the aftermath of war. Once again a winged spirit appears in the arch, but this time it symbolises the attributes of Womanhood, her tender maternal compassion, her sacrifice of son and lover, and her power of resistance under strain.

A new dedication

Went to a park, but avoided flashing (for a change). In Nov 08, a new memorial had been dedicated to the fallen; one I had not seen before. On the night I was in this park the Adelaide Oval lights were ablaze for a sporting event, creating a reflection off the metal 'flames' of the new monument. I liked the way this brought the memorial to life, as it gave off a golden/brass like glow; offset with the illuminated red flame centre. I didn't really capture what I saw, but anyone in Adelaide should check out the glow the lights create on this art piece as well as the glow created without the lights on at the oval.

Colonel Light Statue Adelaide sunrise

The statue of Colonel William Light atop Montefiore Hill where it provides a vista of the city. The light towers are for the Adelaide Oval, with the city centre to the right of frame.

"Deeply feeling the importance of the trust imposed upon me by the Commissioners when they confided solely to me the task of selecting a site for the capital of this province; and feeling yet more the fact that the well-being of thousands is now connected with, and may, in a great measure, depend, upon the correctness of the decision I then made, I am anxious, if possible, to convince the Commissioners and the public that I endeavoured scrupulously to do my duty, and that my exertions have been conscientiously directed to the good of the colony."
