Il Castello Ursino

Il Castello Ursino di Catania fu fondato da Federico II di Svevia nel XIII secolo. Il maniero ebbe una certa visibilità nel corso dei Vespri siciliani, come sede del parlamento siciliano e fu, in seguito, residenza dei sovrani aragonesi fra cui Federico III. ll progetto e la direzione dei lavori furono affidati all'architetto militare Riccardo da Lentini che lo realizzò su quello che allora era un imprendibile promontorio di roccia sul mare, collegata con un istmo alla città ed alle mura cittadine. Fu dotato anche di un imponente fossato e ponte levatoio. Probabilmente il nome di "Ursino" dato al castello deriverebbe da Castrum Sinus ovvero il castello del golfo.
Oggi è sede del museo civico di Catania

Via dei Crociferi

La via dei Crociferi è una zona stradale di Catania realizzata nel XVIII secolo. Essa ha inizio in Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi e vi si accede passando sotto l’arco di San Benedetto.
La strada, contornata da chiese, monasteri e poche abitazioni civili, è un esempio di unità dell’architettura barocca. Nel breve spazio di circa 200 metri sono presenti ben quattro chiese. La prima è la Chiesa di San Benedetto collegata al convento delle suore benedettine dall’arco omonimo che sovrappassa la via e collega la Badia grande alla Badia piccola. Ad essa si accede a mezzo di una scalinata ed è contornata da una cancellata in ferro battuto. Proseguendo si incontra la Chiesa di San Francesco Borgia alla quale si accede tramite due scaloni. Le due chiese sono separate da una piccola via che conduce al Palazzo Asmundo Francica-Nava, aggettante su Piazza Asmundo. A seguire si incontra il Collegio dei gesuiti, vecchia sede dell’Istituto d’Arte, con all’interno un bel chiostro con portici su colonne ed arcate.
Di fronte al Collegio è ubicata la Chiesa di San Giuliano considerata uno degli esempi più belli del barocco catanese. L’edificio, attribuito all’architetto Giovan Battista Vaccarini, ha un prospetto convesso e delle linee pulite ed eleganti. Proseguendo ed oltrepassando la via Antonino di San Giuliano, si può ammirare il Convento dei Crociferi e quindi la Chiesa di San Camillo. In fondo alla via è ubicata Villa Cerami, che è sede della Facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell’Università di Catania.

La chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena a Catania è uno dei più grandi edifici di culto cattolico della Sicilia, misurando 105 metri di lunghezza e 48 di larghezza. La sua costruzione è posteriore all'eruzione dell'Etna del 1669 e sostituisce un tempio più antico rinascimentale.
