Poipu Beach - Kauai - Hawaii

For sunsets a great location, Poipu Beach on the west coast of Kauai. Lots of people here, although it doesn't show in this one image, but it seems a very popular beach destination. Sunset gave wonderful colours and the green seaweed over the rocks was just what i needed for contrasting colours.

Morning Glory - Ten Boer - Netherlands

Not far from where i live and there are stand, these two brothers in early morning light. The big one is called Widde Meuln, which means White Mill and the little one is Bovenrijge, a sawmill from 1903.
It's 05:00am and there is a lot of fog over the land and over the canal in front, but it's producing the right atmosphere i need for such an image. A great begin of a new lovely warm sunny day.
This panoramic shot is made from 4 vertical exposures with the famous Canon 300mm. Not much tweaking around here, light and colours were simply magical that morning.

Sunset Haleakala Volcano - Maui - Hawaii

Haleakala Volcano - Far above the clouds.
Haleakala National Park slices up volcanic Mount Haleakala, a dramatic scurry to the clouds from sea level to over 3000 meters (10,000 feet) over a distance of 60 km (35 miles). The environment changes rapidly and dramatically with the altitude, from subtropical rainforest at sea level to subalpine desert in the crater.
Last sunlight of the day is hitting the volcano and the surrounding clouds.

Sunrise Kapa'a Beach Park.
It's 5:30am, pitch black and i'm standing on a windy beach in Kapaa town on Kauai east coast waiting for sunrise. I see a glimpse of light on the horizon and have to focus manual because it's still too dark. I take a guess with a 120 sec exposure and when loading these images in to the computer i saw more then i ever saw with the naked eye...

The sunset photo i posted a while ago, here is the sunrise.....far above the clouds.

Problem with being there at sunrise means you have a very early start of the day. My day started at 2:15am, in the car at 2:30am and i was on top of the volcano around 4am. Too early, but 30 min after me the crowds came in and very quickly the parking lot was full.
Despite the cold that morning, the reward was great seeing the sun coming up above the clouds.

Castlerigg at Sunrise - Keswick - Lake District - England

Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain, and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. Every year thousands of people visit it to look, photograph, draw and wonder why and when and by whom it was built. The stone circle is on the level top of a low hill with views across to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Lonscale Fell.
I was hoping for a glorious morning, but i had lots of clouds around 5am in the morning and for a moment i thought that luck was not on my side. But seeing first light coming from the clouds i thought about doing long exposures, putting more drama in the fast moving clouds with this as result.

Neuschwanstein Castle.
After coming home from Hawaii changing my suitcase once again and stepped in my car and drove to southern Germany, visiting friends and shooting fall colours and castles. This one doesn't need any extra introduction, it's famous Neuswchanstein Castle. And instead of the more closer and classic views, i took the first gondola up the Tegelberg and walked back down the mountain. It was a heavy hike with all the gear and the 300m/m, but about half way i found a spot with the lake and castle fully captured in morning light and autumn colours.

Sunset above the Clouds - Haleakala N.P - Maui - Hawaii

Haleakala National Park slices up volcanic Mt. Haleakala, a dramatic scurry to the clouds from sea level to over 3000 meters (10,000 feet) over a distance of 60 km (35 miles). The environment changes rapidly and dramatically with the altitude, from subtropical rainforest at sea level to subalpine desert in the crater. Most people visit Haleakala at sunrise (which i also did), but only a few were there enjoying this spectacular scenery at sunset.....far above the clouds.

On the left you see the Haleakala High Altitude Observatory site, the site of Hawaii's first astronomical research observatory. "Seeing" conditions on Haleakala can be as good as on Mauna Kea, a site recognized to have one of the best astronomical conditions for ground-based observatories.

Wailua Falls from the Air - Kauai - Hawaii

Wailua Falls.
I never believed in shooting from behind glass, so all i had to do was finding a helicopter company that was flying with doors out. Thanks to Royce i found one. And although it was very windy, even some rain came inside, it was a great adventure knowing that only the seatbelt saves you form not falling out ;-)
This is Wailua Falls from the air, also easy accessible by car and well known in many commercial shootings and for the older ones among you, well known from the old tv series "Fantasy Island".

Sunset Poolenalena Beach - Maui - Hawaii

It's rare to find an unoccupied beach in south Maui, but that's just what is likely to happen when you visit Po'olenalena (also known as Paipu Beach, Pepeiaolepo Beach, Love Beach, Keauhou Beach or Makena Surf Beach). Po'olenalena is excellent for swimming since its sandy shores slope gently into the water. The lava rocks at each end of the beach make for great snorkeling too.
During the day not that many people here, but at sunset i was all alone. Nice warm colours, great place to be when shooting sunsets with view on the West Maui Volcano.

Surfers under the Rainbow.
No rain for me that morning on Waikiki Beach, only far out on the Pacific i saw huge rainshowers, black skies, impressive clouds and......this rainbow that was showing up on the horizon.
Wakiki was sunny and warm, a fine day for taking a dive in the Pacific ocean.

Palmtrees at sunset at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
Something like this i had in mind before i left home, but had no real idea were to shoot this. A few days before i left home i found this place on the Big Island of Hawaii at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. It are not only the palms that make it a nice spot, also the place it self which is of historical interest is worth a visit.

Sunset at Secret Beach, Makena Cove - Maui - Hawaii

Secret Beach, also called Makena Cove is one of the most photographed beaches on Maui. Funny considering its one of the smallest. A very cozy beach, you will feel like you are in a postcard.
And if you think this tiny little beach sounds and looks idylic than you are right. But at the time i took this image 6 weddings were going on at once!!! With other words, getting married on Maui barefoot in the sand means more or less that you end up here, on Secret Beach.

When i arrived here i had a very hard time to find and stay at "my" spot! I had lots of shots with people walking in front of the lens (how can you become mad at someone who just got married?) and could delete almost all images. This is one of the few that came out right.
A few days later i returned here at 5:30 before sunrise, no one there, what a treat ;-)

Hohenschwangau Castle.
The little Hohenschwangau Castle is much less visit than his bigger brother Neuswchanstein which stands almost beside him. But lit up by light in the evening, it's a much bigger attraction for photographers. This one is taken right after sunset, you can press L for more detail.

Sunset at the Pacific - Hawaii

Sunset over the lava fields.
Sometimes you don't need to drive long to get to a certain spot. You step out of your hotel en put your tripod 50 meters from the entrance and you see this in front of you.....sunset over the lava rocks to the wide open Pacific.
So far the last one from Hawaii, lets go to the next destination in the next upload.

Not the extreme high waves i was hoping for (too early in the season), but hanging out an hour at Hookipa beack Park and seeing the boys and girls riding the waves was fun shooting.

Garden of Eden - Maui - Hawaii

Garden of Eden.
Driving the road to Hana on Maui's east coast. A long lingering road with curves, bridges and every now and then stunning views over the Pacific ocean. Don't forget to stop at the Garden of Eden, one of the most beautiful views on Maui.
The garden is most popular for its debut in 'Jurassic Park,' where the opening sequence of the movie was filmed, specifically the Keopuka 'Jurassic Park' Rock which can be seen from one absolutely gorgeous lookout inside the garden.
