As we come into rainy season, there are fewer flowers, but still some hearty souls. I was struck by the delicate curve of the branch on which these flowers grew. It reminded me of Japanese woodcut style images.

Mustard and Oak - Inverted

An experiment with color inverting. This is an image of an oak tree surrounded by mustard flowers. I inverted the colors and then played a bit with tinting to get the image just as I wanted it. Was this experiment a success or a failure?

The mustard flower is stunning this year. On a walk his Sunday, entire hillsides were bathed in yellow. The oak trees, with their new leaves, look especially striking in this yellow landscape. Here's a shot of a lone oak in a meadow covered in mustard flower.

This was shot handheld with a Lensbaby Composer, plastic optic, starburst aperture. The image has general levels adjustments as well as a gradient layer applied. Tell me if you like it or not.

This is another image of some lovely red flowers on a tree in the neighborhood. These were originally shot using a Lenbaby Composer with plastic optic and starburst aperture. In post-processing, I applied an infrared treatment to them to produce this effect, which I liked. Tell me if you like or not.

This is the same shot as the infrared earlier in the series, but with no IR treatment. Shot with a Lensbaby Composer, plastic optic, starburst aperture. Cropped, slightly desaturated, slightly vignetted.

I don't know what these wonderful red blossom are, but they sure are pretty. Found them around the neighborhood and spent many happy minutes shooting them from all angles.

This shot was taken using a Lensbaby Composer with plastic optic and starburst creative aperture. Cropped and levels adjustment in post-processing.

A Bee in a Sea of Lavender

There is a ton of lavender around the neighborhood. I guess that should be no surprise since Lavender Drive is a nearby street. Here is a shot of a bee enjoying a visit to a field of lavender late one afternoon.

A honeybee flits among the little flowers of this tree, alighting to sip some nectar and then quickly checking the next blossom. It seems like painstaking work. Step one in the production of honey. Shot using the plastic optic with starburst creative aperture option using a Lensbaby Composer.

Shot for the Macro Monday theme sweet. Nothing is as sweet and delicious as honey.

Butterfly in detail

I came across this very patient butterfly last spring. He posed for many shots, some of which turned out really well. The challenge of this shot is that it was done handheld using manual focus with the fussy Lensbaby Composer. Anyone who has ever worked with this lens, knows the challenge of laser sharp focus with it.

No post-processing.

Shot in Las Trampas regional wilderness, Alamo, CA.
