Pilsner Urquell

Pilsner Urquell, probably the best known beer in the Czech Republic. I drank it at a downtown restaurant in Prague, "U Zlateho Zvonu," where I bought dinner for our Friendship Force hosts. If you read Czech, you can get a little history of the beer. The only word I know is "pivovar" (brewery). :-)

My host did not serve beer in her house, though her late husband had been director of a brewery (Pivovar Branik), both before and after the fall of communism in 1989-1990. This was one of the few times I drank beer in our one-week stay in Prague. The best beer was Gambrinus, which I had at the welcome dinner. That restaurant did not have beer mats. I learned later that Gambrinus is owned by Pilsner Urquell, and brewed in a separate brewery on the same site.

It is ironic that two major Chech beers, Budweiser (Czech) and Pilsner Urquell, aggressively claim trademarks which are based on the German names of the cities where they are brewed. The Czechoslovak government abolished German place names in favor of Czech names shortly after World War II.

Prague - Branik Brewery

Pivovar Branik, a handsome building built in 1899. Marie's late husband was a director of this brewery. The brewery was named after the town, now a district in Prague by the Vltava River. There have been three major developments since we were there in 2000. (1) The brewery merged with Staropramen, another Prague brewery. (2) The brewery operations were modernized. (3) The merged company was bought by InBev, a Belgian company which owns breweries in many countries. Its leading brand is Stella Artois.

Prague's premier concert hall, by the Vltava River. It was built in 1874-1885 and named after Crown Prince Rudolf. The actual concert hall in the building is named after Antonin Dvorak.

This huge palace was built by Albrecht von Wallenstein (1583-1634), commander-in-chief of the Austrian armies during part of the Thirty Years War.

Palais Schwarzenberg is near Prague Castle. Prince Schwarzenberg and his family had an elegant palace in Vienna, too - and other palaces here and there.

The New Palace is in the Third Courtyard of Prague Castle - the one closest to the entrance. It is the residence of the President of the Republic. It looks like a baroque building, but was remodeled in the 1920s.
