Prestige, Value, & Identity Bracelets 2001

Harriete Estel Berman posted a photo:

Prestige, Value, & Identity Bracelets 2001 (close-up of the VALUE Bracelet)

Bracelets constructed from recycled tin cans, some with brass detail. This is one of two bracelets that uses a tin can on the outside edge printed with images of gemstones. These bracelets are a discussion about the prestige of jewelry, the intrinsic value of gold, silver and gemstones used in jewelry, and the fact that jewelry serves to identify a persons social status or group.

Value is rarely determined in consumer goods by the actual intrinsic value of the materials. Value is more likely determined by a perception of brand name(in this case the bracelet is from a tin can with Pepsi advertising), price or quality comparison to similar items,

Ironically sentimental value has no fixed price and is difficult to determine or described as irreplaceable. The value of the item is as a symbol, quoting Rob Walker from the book BUYING IN ...the signifigance of the materials things and symbols that mean the most has always flowed from us to the object, not the other way around.

The issue of value presented in this bracelet also includes the value of the brand identity from the Pepsi tin can. Corporations actually consider that their logo, corporate identity and brand name have value to both the corporation and the consumer.
Prestige, Value, & Identity Bracelets 2001
