LUNCH BREAK on the HONMOKU TIDAL FLATS of NEGISHI VILIAGE, YOKOHAMA

By T. ENAMI, ca,1898-1905. Shell Pickers (Clam Diggers) south of Yokohama.

View number S-484 or S-485 from Enami's 3-D Catalog.

Title printed under the above view does not match the titles given for this position in the Enami Catalog. This is typical of both Enami and Kimbei, whose catalog titles and captions on the photos were often related, but not exactly the same.

Back before WW2, a half-stereoview of the above T. ENAMI image was published as a full-page illustration in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE. Enami was an alumni of that special circle of photographers whose compositions have illustrated articles appearing between the covers of this yellow-bordered magazine --- in Enami's case, his photographs have appeared in at least four issues.

This scene on the tidal flats is about two and a half miles as the crow flies, south of Enami's studio. After WW2, the ocean seen just behind this group was land-filled to the horizon for oil tanks, industry, and highways. The cliffs, however, remain exactly as you see them, with a narrow public park running along the base. The picnickers would now be sitting in a man-made pond, and just off to the right, an elevated multi-lane expressway is backed-up during rush hour.
Shell-Pickers off Honmoku Misaki - Yokohama

Okinawa Soba posted a photo:

By T. ENAMI, ca. 1898-1903. This richly printed image was photographed just south of Yokohama. Notice the sailing ship in the distance, headed into Yokohama Port about two miles north around the bend of the cliff.

If you put your cursor over the map at the upper right of this page, you can see that this spot is now far inland, long gone and buried under extensive industrial landfills.

Shell-pickers were a favorite theme with Enami. He shot many images along the tidal flats that were used by several stereoview publishers across North America, Europe, and Australia.

The particular series of variants from the above session are one of the few sets of Meiji-era Japanese images that can be arranged in the perfect chronological order in which they were taken. The key is the sailing ship mentioned above, moving to the left like a linear clock hand...thus, the pictures can be lined up like scattered frames from a motion picture, your own imagination filling in the gaps to bring alive a moment in time from over 100 years ago.

HERE are some GERMAN-MADE 3-D variants using Enami negatives from the above photo session : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3948447010/
