Old Photo (Faith Goble)

This is an old photo of me that is disintegrating horribly, so I decided to scan it before it completely fades away. It really needs re-touching, which I may attempt to do someday if I ever feel particularly ambitious. I have so few photos of myself when I was young that I sometimes forget what I looked like. I was about twenty-four or twenty-five so it would have been in the early 1980s when this was taken at one of those booths where you dress up in costumes. I don't know why the photo is in such bad shape, but it looks as if it has fingerprints all over it. I was dressed up as a "saloon girl" in this photo and my ex was dressed as a jackass (not really, he just was a jackass--at all times). When I cut my ex's picture out of this portrait, I cut off everything but my head, which I wish I had not done now.

This is cc licensed, so if you would like to re-touch it and use it in any way, either commercially or not, go ahead. I would like to see how it looks, so if you decide to re-touch it, I'd appreciate it if you would send me a link. What very few re-touching skills I have ever possessed (and they were almost non-existent in the first place) are rusty from disuse.

I was about twenty-four when this picture was taken. I have posted this because a friend wanted to see it. I don't have many old photos of myself; I was usually the one taking the pictures. I've never enjoyed being photographed. I preferred being behind the lens, not in front of it.

Fun with Larry on a Sunday afternoon. Larry, as many of you know, is my sweet and obviously much-abused yet patient rescued beagle. Here, he is participating in the college-student fad of "planking." Since Larry is a beagle and has a mind of his own, he decided to lie on his back--it's too easy to lie on his belly. This is not Photoshopped; he actually is lying on the surfaces as shown. He wasn't crazy about it, but he's a very agreeable dog.

I made this logo (incorporating hands for peace, the dove, the olive branch, and the pomegranate blossom (which is the national flower of Libya), for a group on facebook promoting peace. Many people, including me, are worried about the possibility of more war between the US and the Islamic countries in the Middle East. Many devout people were deeply offended by the scurrilous movie Innocence of Muslims, which seems to have led to the assassination of Ambassador Stevens in Libya. Peace-loving people here and in Libya do not want war. I do not blame all people of a particular group for the actions of a few, and I pray that others will not judge all Americans by the actions of a few, either. I am a Christian, but I refuse to hate others simply because they don't necessarily believe as I do. One of the most important commandments of the Christian Bible is to love our brothers--and we are all brothers.

Happy Dragon Year!

I made this papier-mâché mask years ago for a school play. I let the kids in the classroom where I was working as a volunteer help me with the mask. They were responsible for gluing on the sequins, and I must say, standing over this while more than twenty children glued on a few sequins at a time was not the most enchanting experience I've ever had. Perhaps it wasn't for them, either, but I suppose it broke the deadening boredom of the typical school day.

I've been waiting for an excuse to photograph the mask ever since it appeared in the two performances it was used in for almost twenty years ago. Thank goodness that the Year of the Dragon is finally here.

Little Girls, a Big Puppy, and My Appalling Chinese (My Son in China Daily)

One of my son Brant's essays was recently published in China Daily. China Daily is China's largest and most influential English language newspaper, with a daily print readership of 500,000 (a third of whom live abroad). I'm very proud of Brant, who has been teaching at Huaihua University in the Hunan Province for a year or so now.

I home-schooled Brant and his siblings while living on a farm in the middle of nowhere deep in the hinterlands of western Kentucky, and my children's only companions were raccoons, a few coyotes, a menagerie of rescued dogs and cats, each other, and me; so I especially admire Brant for traveling around the globe alone to teach as soon as he finished his M.A. He's a long way from home, but he's doing very well and loves China. As you can see from the photo above, Brant is also a good sport--and his students seem to love him. Brant is an editor, writer, and poet whose work has appeared in the Cynic and numerous other publications.

I hope you enjoy the story. I've included a bit of it in the first comment.

Every day, from millions of uploaded photos, flickr, the largest photo sharing site in the world, algorithmically chooses the 500 most "popular" photos. No one really knows what the algorithm is that flickr uses. I have no idea why some of my photos made Explore and other did not--I have no idea why some of my photos made Explore at all. There are many lovely images on Flickr that deserve the honor more than most of mine.

He's currently number one, but you know how fickle the electorate can be!

Larry the Beagle has appeared in numerous publications, including a slideshow of pets dressed up for Christmas that appeared in UK's Telegraph. I just hope Larry doesn't decide to do a porno or a sex tape with a ballplayer or has-been rock star to increase his notoriety;-)

Patrick Goble, my son, is the first foreign teacher hired in the city of Huaihua, Hunan, China to instruct Chinese college teachers on IELTS preparation and college level English continuing education. (Photo taken from the city newspaper.) Patrick just turned twenty-seven last month and has been in China since the first week in February. He seems to love teaching in China and will probably not come back to the States for some time. He's teaching English at Huaihua University this semester, but next semester he will be head of the newly formed Contemporary Music Department.

Huaihua is situated in the south-western part of Hunan Province. It has a total area of 27,600 Sq.km., and a population of 4.93 million. The city proper has an area of 31.3 Sq.km., and 370,000 city dwellers.

Patrick's new video utilizes sub-and supersonic frequencies to produce music that evokes a physiological response as well as an emotional one--but to get the full effect you will need good speakers.
