A team from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) have devised a way to wash eggs. Miniature Bubbles Make Your Food Safe!
This team designed and demo their prototype of a sustainable egg-washer used on small-scale farms.

In Lima, Peru more than a third of the city’s 9 million occupants live in slums, many without reliable access to clean water. The city’s primary water supply, Andean glaciers below 5500 meters, will melt as a result of climate change. University of Washington students are experimenting with fog harvesting technologies to extract water from the shroud of fog that covers Lima from June to December. They are designing and evaluating new fog collection materials, configurations and systems to provide clean drinking water and irrigate public gardens for slum communities.

A student team member from the University of Washington team explains how their fog collection systems works.

Cornell University - AguaClara Team showing off their 'Stacked Rapid Sand Filtration': A Robust Filtration Process for Sustainable Drinking Water.

Suitable drinking water is a critical need world-wide, and fresh water is the limiting resource on the planet for the foreseeable future. Cornell University students have built an innovative municipal water treatment system in Honduras that uses a stacked rapid sand filter. They are now improving the design to reduce the energy and water required for maintenance, lower capital and operating costs and simplify daily operation.

The stacked geometry of their design allows the same flow rate for the filtration and backwash cycles without the expensive pumps or elevated tanks required to backwash conventional rapid sand filters.

Cornell University – Sunn team member makes adjustment to their Hybrid Indoor Lighting demo structure.

One of the characteristics that people look for in a green building is access to natural sunlight. Cornell University students are designing, building and testing a new kind of light fixture that couples fiber optics with LED lights to bring optimal sunlight to interior spaces. It includes an innovative lighting control system to provide light that consistently mimics sunshine, regardless of outside conditions.

Landing a spot at the design expo not only gave students the chance to see the other creations, but it was also a chance for a personal visit from area environmental leaders.

Here, EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe and National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) Director, Jim Johnson, Jr. stop in to chat with a team member from the University of Utah.

Their project? A low-cost, sustainable solution for olive mill waste. Proven composting and trickling filtration techniques convert rural olive mill wastes into soil additives and dischargeable water.

Food production around the world often generates highly toxic waste products. This is a particular problem for small operations such as olive oil mills in the Mediterranean region. University of Utah students are working with a team from Birzeit University in the West Bank where disposal of untreated olive mill wastes generates odor, pollutes land and water and inhibits the growth of plants and animals. The students have developed a simple, cost-effective process to treat solid and liquid wastes generated by small-scale olive mills that will also provide treated irrigation water and fertilizer for the olive orchards.

Get the Salt Out! The Manhattan College team displays their solar panel used in their novel desalination process.

The lack of clean drinking water is one of the most significant health issues in many countries around the world. For communities located near the sea, saltwater could be a potential source of drinking water if the current treatment technologies were more affordable. Working with a university in the Philippines, Manhattan College students are developing a treatment system that uses concrete made from local materials and solar power to remove salt from seawater to produce potable water.
