En Route - Valais, Switzerland

A rather unusual black and white image from me, shot en route to the Schonbiel Hut (Schönbielhütte) of the SAC, in the middle of a nasty rainstorm. It was coming down hard, I had my hardshell jacket over the camera, to capture the light breaking through over the Zmutt glacier, along the north side of the Matterhorn in the Valais Alps of Switzerland.

The weekend in San Francisco, assisting Stephen and Brian on the Aperture Academy Night Owls and San Francisco Marin Headlands workshops, turned out to be a two day journey of fun events. Luckily, I got some shooting done too and Rodeo Beach proved to be one of my favorite spots of the weekend, even though Lombard Street with a girl leaning out of a sun roof and screaming "This is like Titaniiiiic, woohoooooo!" ranks pretty high on the list. Not to forget the Hustler stripper truck on the way back to Baker Beach.

While Brian was already in joyous expectation to see the nude dudes on the beach again, I had to stop on a red light. Expecting nothing from the short stop, to our surprise a truck full of blinking lights pulled up right next to us. A quick glance revealed a giant glass cube sitting on the back of the Hustler stripper truck. Yep, it was full of girls dancing to the blasting music. Sorry Stephen, you certainly missed out on that one. I promise we'll not post the HD videos and pictures we got or even remotely tease you with the stories! ;-p

The Storm Machine, Matterhorn, Valais, Switzerland

This is a 16-shot, exposure and focal panoramic blend; looking across the Zmutt valley and glacier towards the north face of the famous Matterhorn, from the bottom of Arbenbach Falls.

The Matterhorn is prone to clouds due to its exposed location, so there are only a couple of days in the year, where no banner clouds form over the course of the day. These banner clouds are caused by air flowing around the mountain, thus creating vortices, conducting condensation on the lee side; usually the eastern face.

Being the sixth highest peak of Alps with 4,478 meters (14,690 ft) and the isolated pyramidal shape allow the Matterhorn to create its own weather systems. So it can be clear a couple miles to any direction while rain and hail is constantly pounding the Matterhorn and surrounding areas, including me. Especially on this very day.

Very shortly after shooting this series of images, I literally raced back down the trails to escape the lightning and pounding rain. Despite some of the best rain gear available, it kept coming down so hard, when I reached my tent, I was drenched.

Cutting Edge - Green River Overlook, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Just tossing this one up for the sake of it. Somewhere right off the Green River overlook in Utah, a couple hundred feet of vertical walls right in front of he tripod foot. A lens cap rolling down here and there... Mid morning, boring sky. Olympus Zuiko 50mm manual focus lens, at f/11 or so. Can't remember. Plain ol' black and white conversion in Nik Silver Efex. Not breaking new grounds with this one, I know. Hardly any old ones.

Cheers! I am off for tonight, rubbing some more stuff on the aching back and scarfing some more pills down. Maybe then the color vision will be back! Holla at ya boy if you need anything.
