Roan Mountain Highlands Rhododendron Blooms - Jane Bald

Catawba Rhododendron at peak bloom in the Roan Highlands along the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western NC. My good friend Mark VanDyke and I went to Jane Bald in the Roan Highlands in June of 2011 to see the rhododendron bloom and it was a spectacular sight. The flame azaleas were also in peak bloom and the view looking over Round Bald and Roan Mountain from here is always an epic landscape. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)

Bodie Island Lighthouse Sunrise OBX Outer Banks NC - The Gatekeeper

Bodie Island Lighthouse at sunrise on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. OBX as the Outer Banks are frequently called is an amazing place to visit, from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to Jockeys Ridge State Park there is natural beauty everywhere you look. My friend Mark VanDyke referred to the Bodie Island Lighthouse as the gatekeeper of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and I think it's a fitting designation for this landmark of North Carolina. Chattooga River Potholes Highlands NC - The Artist's Hand

The Chattooga River near it's headwaters in the Highlands NC and Cashiers NC area of Western NC. This spot is sometimes called the Chattooga Potholes because of it's many sculpted potholes that the river has carved out of the solid granite in this area. Parts of the Chattooga River were featured in the movie "Deliverance".

Blue Ridge Parkway Craggy Gardens Asheville NC - Craggy Pinnacle

Blue Ridge Parkway landscape from Craggy Gardens pinnacle north of Asheville, NC. The Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous at any time of the day or year, this photo was shot on an average summer day from the summit of Craggy Gardens Pinnacle. I really liked how the exposed granite rock leads your eye right up through the curve of the Blue Ridge Parkway as it winds it's way through the peaks of the mountains into the distance under the dappled summer sunlight.

Crepuscular Light Rays on Blue Ridge Parkway - Rays and Ridges

Spectacular crepuscular light rays we saw from the Blue Ridge Parkway last spring after we returned to the mountains from our "Spring in Charleston" landscape photography workshop. These were some of the best light rays I've ever seen, and they were intense for an hour or so.

Outer Banks Jockeys Ridge State Park - Swept Away

The Outer Banks has so many landscapes to photograph, and Jockeys Ridge State Park has plenty of potential. Located in Nags Head on the Outer Banks, Jockeys Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune in the eastern US. There was a nasty storm front moving through with 60mph winds when I shot this photograph, which revealed these awesome patterns in the deeper layers of sand that are normally covered by a thick layer of soft sand and not visible. Looks like Mother Nature's topographical map!

I wish I'd have done a better job shooting this, but it was nearly impossible to think and function while being hammered with flying sand that filled my eyes the second I opened them. The exposure only shows the heaviest flying sand near the ground, but it was bad even at 6 foot (I shot this from about 1.5ft off the ground). While the picture doesn't give a true sense of the amount of flying sand, these were easily the worst conditions I have ever shot under. The $175 polarizer I had on the front of my lens was pitted and completely destroyed from being sandblasted. The wind was blowing so hard that at one point it almost blew me over the edge of the steep dune directly behind me when I stood up. Three days and as many showers later, I was still picking sand out of my eyes, ears, and scalp. Great fun! I'd like to say thanks to Really Right Stuff and F-Stop Bags on this shot, without the right gear I'm not sure this shot would have even been possible...

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse Manteo NC - Blue Hour Reflections

The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in Manteo NC near the Outer Banks during blue hour. Shot during our trip to the Outer Banks of NC last spring, I really liked the bright gold bursts against the rich blue hour tones. I don't do too much night photography, but it has always intrigued me so I suspect I'll be working at night more in the future. I'd also like to thank my good friend Mark VanDyke for turning me on to so many great locations at the Outer Banks!

Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on a sunny afternoon. Cades Cove is an amazing place to visit if you are near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering scenic views of the Smokies and an incredible array of wildlife. Sunset from Clingmans Dome parking lot in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park outside of Gatlinburg, TN. The highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6,643 ft, Clingmans Dome is a popular destination for tourists. It is located off of US-441 between Gatlinburg TN and Cherokee NC in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I shot this landscape on my birthday during a trip to Gatlinburg last summer with some good friends. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)

Update 12/08/12: This image was just selected as a finalist in the landscape category in this year's AMPC (Appalachian Mountain Photo Contest) at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone, NC. Come on out for this wonderful event!

Spring rhododendron blooms along the Appalachian Trail near Jane Bald in the Roan Mountain Highlands area. The Southern Appalachians offer up such gorgeous landscapes when the catawba rhododendron flowers and flame azaleas are blooming, and hiking the Appalachian Trail at this time of year is a spiritual experience for outdoor lovers. This classic view from Jane Bald looking toward Roan Mountain is one of my favorites, and I was thrilled to get such great light on the mountains when we visited. Click the image to view it large! Another winter landscape shot of the icy trees in the incredible lighting at Jump Off Rock during the winter of 2011. Landscape photography featuring a cold winter sunset in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina near Hendersonville, NC. Captured at Jump Off Rock in Laurel Park, this shot really showcases some amazing lighting and conditions at sunset after a winter storm. A small hole in the heavy fog at sunset time allowed the sun to beam in and back light the rime ice crystals covering these old oak trees.

Autumn at Dry Falls in Highlands NC. We absolutely love Highlands NC for all the great sights, roads, food, people and more! Dry Falls is one of the reasons we are so fond of Highlands and it is easy to see why. This is an epic waterfall in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, and during the fall foliage it is really something special to see.

A spectacular sunset over Lake Jocassee in the Blue Ridge Mountains foothills of Upstate South Carolina. I've been after this shot for 2 years now and am so happy to finally get a decent shot of this awesome scenic landscape! It took me nearly 20 trips to this location that is 9 miles from the nearest road and difficult to get to. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)

Great Smoky Mountains Gatlinburg TN Roaring Fork - Gift of Life

Another scenic landscape photo from the Roaring Fork in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park outside of Gatlinburg TN.

I named this image "The Gift of Life" for a few reasons. Aside from the obvious meaning of the water supplying life to the lush forest around it, and the way such places have a way of nourishing the soul, this wonderful portion of river is right behind a historic homestead and surely offered the owners the means to live in this somewhat harsh environment. This gorgeous area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park definitely embodies the name "The Gift of Life" in my opinion. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)

Blue Ridge Parkway Asheville NC - Enduring Craggy

The "Tree of Life" shrouded in fog on the hiking trail to Craggy Pinnacle. Craggy Gardens along the Blue Ridge Parkway is a popular spot for Asheville locals to get outdoors and hike. The scenic landscape views of the Southern Appalachians near Asheville NC are spectacular, and Craggy Gardens also boasts a large natural catawba rhododendron garden that paints the mountains with bright pink spring blooms in early summer. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)

On a side note, this is probably the last picture I'll ever take with my trusty Nikon D700, as I now have two Nikon D800s in my bag. The D700 now belongs to my wife Jennifer who will hopefully put it to good use!

Sunset on the Blue Ridge Parkway looking into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Blue Ridge Mountains south of Asheville NC offer so many amazing scenic landscapes that it's easy to see why this area is one of the most popular destinations in the Southern Appalachians, especially for landscape photography.

This is an older shot of mine that I took a few years ago, back when my ability to develop a raw file was rather poor. I thought I'd have another go at it and this is the end result. Hope you enjoy it, faves and comments are appreciated! ;-)

Smoky Mountains Landscape Photography - Spring at Mortons Overlook

Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Vibrant spring greens under an approaching storm at Mortons Overlook between Cherokee NC and Gatlinburg TN. I thought this was a neat scene with a nasty storm closing in on us quickly, yet there was this brilliant hole at the end where you could still see the gorgeous clear spring day that was coming to an end. This was very difficult lighting to expose properly, but I think the end result here accurately reflects the conditions we saw. Click the image to view it large! Folly Beach Charleston SC Sunset - The Calm

An amazing sunset at Folly Beach on our most recent trip to the coastal areas near Charleston, SC. This South Carolina beach scene had all of the elements a landscape photographer could hope for with a great subject, incredible lighting, leading lines in the sky and water to draw you deeper into the scene, and it's all topped off by a richly colored sunset sky. I especially like the way a beam of golden evening light perfectly highlights the fine detail of the tree trunks.

I shot this image on the eve of Hurricane Irene as she approached Charleston, and you can see the leading edge of the storm on the horizon. I returned to this location the next morning as the storm hit and it was anything but the peaceful and serene environment pictured here. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)
