Quantock Hills - Red Deer 19th May 2013

David Cronin posted a photo:

A warm spring morning tempted me out for a walk on the hills around my house. I took the opportunity to take my camera with the 150 - 500 mm Sigma lens in case I came across any deer. As I was walking up Bicknoller Combe I spotted four hinds on a hillside about four to five hundred yards away. I managed to get a few pictures before they decided to move off, probably disturbed by a noisy bunch of mountain bikers who tore down the combe.

Not the greatest of deer pictures but seeing the deer and buzzards and hearing a cuckoo made the walk very enjoyable.

I was packing my camera equipment this evening, after capturing the evening sky, when I noticed through my window that the Moon was very clear and bright. So I got my gear together and went outside and managed to capture this picture of the Moon. This is the first image of the Moon taken using my 150-500mm Sigma lens and I am very pleased with the results.

I was out in my garden this evening enjoying the evening sunshine and I had my camera with me. From the top of the garden I saw that the Sun had dropped behind a bank of cloud and was lighting up the sea with a searchlight like beam. A real case of being glad I had my camera with me.

The land above the horizon on the right of the picture is the coast of South Wales.

Recently our next door neighbour told me about a spot near Holford where one could be almost guaranteed to see Red Deer. This evening I popped over there to recce the spot for future reference. The deer were not quite where I had hoped so I had no cover from which to photograph them, however I managed a few shots before they decided to leave. This is is the best of the pictures I managed to get.

Also this was my first opportunity to use my 150 to 500mm Sigma lens on wildlife.

Shepton Beauchamp - Churchyard Cross

To the north east of the town of Ilminster, in Somerset, lies the village of Shepton Beauchamp. At the heart of the village stands the parish church of Saint Michael and All Angels. The church which dates from the 13th to 16th centuries was restored in 1865 by the architect G. E. Street. The work carried out under Street included the addition of the clerestory to the nave and the south porch in the neo-Decorated style. The 20th century also brought additions to the church with the insertion of a fine stained glass window in the Lady Chapel and the erection of a Calvary group on a rood beam across the chancel arch.

This picture shows the churchyard cross which looks medieval but is in fact , a memorial to the Coles family of Shepton Beauchamp House and is dated 1872. It is grade II listed.

This picture shows one of the two figures from the two lancet window at the West end of the North aisle of the church. This figure represents Saint Stephen, the first martyr; see Acts vii : 54 to 60. Unfortunately this window has decayed badly over the years. The decay hints that the window either dates from before the restoration of 1865 or from the time of the restoration of 1865. The pattern of decay, particularly of the faces, is reminiscent to the decay I have seen in early windows by Hardman.

This picture shows the two lancet window at the West end of the North aisle of the church. The window contains figures representing Saint Stephen and Saint Alban. Unfortunately this window has decayed badly over the years. The decay hints that the window either dates from before the restoration of 1865 or from the time of the restoration of 1865. The pattern of decay, particularly of the faces, is reminiscent to the decay I have seen in early windows by Hardman.

This picture shows a close up of the figures depicting the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus from the fine East window to the Lady Chapel of the church. From the dedication I would suggest the window dates to around 1938 and is probably the work of Christopher Webb, although there is no signature.

This picture shows the fine East window to the Lady Chapel of the church. The window has figures depicting Isaiah, the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus and Saint Athanasius. From the dedication I would suggest the window dates to around 1938 and is probably the work of Christopher Webb, although there is no signature.

This picture shows one of the panels from the reredos installed during the restoration carried out in 1865 under the supervision of G E Street. This panel shows the Christian symbol of a lamb carrying a cross, a symbol of the Crucifixion.
