I went out this evening looking for something to photograph. This little satyr was perched up on the side of the house. I closed my hand over it and perhaps he liked the warmth. He was content to sit on my hand for a few minutes.

I love the American Painted Lady (Vanessa Virginiensis). Perhaps it is biased of me but I find her far more beautiful than the more widespread Painted Lady (Vanessa Cardui). The colors of the APL are richer, especially the pinks.

It won't be long till spring is here.

I have seen one Spring Azure, and two Comas yesterday but no butterflies today. We got by without frost last night and it went into the sixties. Today I cut more firewood and trimmed back some of the bushes.

Buddleia davidii is the scientific name for butterfly bush. It is also called orange eye. The orange bokeh behind the body of the swallowtail comes from orange milkweed (called butterfly milkweed. The Spicebush Swallowtail is missing one of its orange eye spots at the third position on the inner ring of eye spots.

Here is one more Black Swallowtail photograph. I loved the original shot but there was a leaf partially obscuring the wing (see comment section. I used photoshop to erase the leaf. I actually clipped a piece from a different shot of the same butterfly to mend the missing orange spot (third down on right.)
I also rotated the photo just a bit.

Both the black morph and the female yellow morph of the Tiger Swallowtail have bright blue stippling.

As spring approaches I await the return of the flowers and butterflies. Already the buds are appearing and some small wildflowers are braving the cool weather.

It is hard to distinguish the sex of the tiger swallowtail from the lateral (ventral) view. In the male the abdomen is more pointed and the orange eye spots are smaller than the female.

She is found mainly in the Americas. We also see the Painted Lady, Vanessa carduii.

Butterflies have favourite flowers just like I have favorite foods. I find liatris, lantana, thistle, butterfly bush, and milkweed work very well for attracting a wide variety of butterflies. A lot of really pretty flowers do not seem to attract many bugs.

This year I have planted Paw Paw (ordered through internet) and hope to attract Zebra Swallowtails. I have planted a spice bush but I don't know how well that is working. I have planted a lot of seed in pots including various milweed, some butterfly bush, zinea, cosmos, and some sunflowers. I spread a lot of coneflower seed from some that came up last year.

Butterflies. Come and get it!

I mentioned a few days ago that I saw a Hackberry butterfly gathering nectar. Well here is a shot of the Hackberry at work on white butterfly bush.
