maguire33@verizon.net posted a photo:

Atlantis' first flight/landing at Edwards AFB. Mission 51-J. A shuttle landing is basically silent, except for 1 or 2 sonic booms moments before, as it glides to landing. I so now remember the pressure of trying to locate it as it comes fast, and then it's over ... the 747/Enterprise fly-over on April 27, 2012 over the skies of New York prompted me to revisit slide images I had taken in the mid-80s.

Atlantis 10-7-85-2

Atlantis' first flight/landing at Edwards AFB. Mission 51-J highlighted DSCS satellite deployment, and was the 2nd classified DoD mission. Just a little nostalgia, as NASA winds down our shuttle program with the NYC fly-over on April 27, 2012. This is just after landing, still WAY out there on the dry lake bed. The apparatus trailing behind is basically ensuring decontamination and who knows what else...

This is cropped some not a lot from a high-resolution (2400dpi) slide scan. I was really surprised to see how grainy even the highly rated slide films are compared to my 22 megapixel Canon 5D Mark III. Wouldn't it have been grand to have the tools I have today 25 years ago!!

Just a little nostalgia, as NASA winds down our shuttle program with the NYC fly-over on April 27, 2012. I was privileged to photograph a few of the shuttle landings at Edwards Air Force Base in the '80s. This is Atlantis Mission 61-B 12/3/85 just touching down at Edwards. Mission 61-B included multiple comsat deployment, EASE/ACCESS experiment, and the first Mexican in space.

Mission STS-9 was the first spacelab mission. Columbia lands successfully in early December 1983 on Edwards AFB's dry lake bed. This is my all-time favorite image from a number of landings - the only one I have with the chase plane overhead. I had no idea - never saw it till after I was going through the slides.

Space Shuttle Columbia was the first spaceworthy Space Shuttle in NASA's orbital fleet. First launched on the STS-1 mission, the first of the Space Shuttle program, it completed 27 missions before being destroyed during re-entry on February 1, 2003 near the end of its 28th, STS-107. All seven crew members died in that disaster.

Mission 51-F Spacelab 2 complete. Challenger swoops in for landing. I was privileged to watch several shuttle landings in the 80s. They glide in silently - the only warning is a sonic boom or two a few moments before - and they glide in very fast - I remember the pressure to try and pick it up and follow it, quite often at dawn. And basically, you got one shot at it with a 36 exposure roll - no room for error. It was a grand time. But today, April 27, 2012, the program is history.
