Lower Downtown and North Downtown Tour

TD Ameritrade Park.

Yep, TD Ameritrade is located in Omaha. A merger of Toronto Dominion Bank's Stock Brokerage division and the Omaha based Ameritrade led to the new organisation. Based in Omaha, the new TD Ameritrade tower will rise next year in the Old Mill area. They also bought the rights to the new baseball park.

Omaha has been host to the NCAA College World Series of Baseball for decades at the old Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, across from the magnificent zoo. In an unprecedented move, after reviewing and driving the new stadium design, the NCaAA signed a 25 year extension to host the CWS in Omaha. The stadium will also host the Creighton University baseball team, and the Omaha Nighthawks UFL Football Team. The Omaha Royals AAA baseball team were not willing to sign and are moving to Sarpy county.

The zoo will be given the land that the old stadium was on, and they will use it to greatly expand their exhibition space.

The stadium will cost $142 million dollars.

The Hilton Hotel. This was built the same time as the new Omaha Convention Center and connects by an overhead walkway to the complex. The Mayor announced plans to expand the hotel, and it was passed quickly and construction will begin in a few weeks on expansion of the number of rooms over the existing parking garage extension.

The hotel is actually owned by the city and managed by Hilton.

The Mayor announced plans to expand the hotel, and it was passed quickly and construction will begin in a few weeks on expansion of the number of rooms over the existing parking garage extension.

The Omaha Convention Center and Qwest Arena.

Built to replace the aging Civic Arena and Convention Space, this was completed in the early 2000's and has been a hit ever since. Well, at least the arena has. Booked for many national acts who used to bypass Omaha, it has also served as a site for NCAA competitions as well. The 2008 Olympic Swimming Trials were held here. Women's National Volleyball Finals have been held here. Rounds one and two of NCAA March Madness basketball were held here last year. Rodeosd, concerts and a number of other events, plus UNO hockey and Creighton basketball are all locted at the Qwesat as well. Carrie Underwood was performing there tonight.

"Waiting On My Limo"

Or MAT, the public bus system. I gave up vehicle ownership about 4 years ago. Maybe five...not sure. I had a truck. $431 a month payment. $105 a month for insurance downtown. $80 a month for a garage space. $489 a year for tags. Pickups eat gas. And I walked to work most of the time. I drove it once, maybe twice a week, and realized it was costing me about $125 per trip. Seemed a bit outragious to me. So, now I pay $50 a month and can go anywhere I want. And I have about $500 more to spend on a nicer place to live, etc. I am still happy with the decision.

Ha!! It hit 100F today. Maybe exceeded. The humidity was 80% and it was perfectly clear. Not a cloud in the sky. I broke out in a fresh sweat every time I walked outside. The heat indext? About 115F again. Lovely!
I am tired of taking pics of me at work. But it seems that is all I am doing lately, so...this is what you get. After all it was my double shift Wednesday.

"Not The First Day Back At Work I Was Expecting!"

I get in to work this morning. Oh look, my board is covered with parties for the week. How come I didn't know about this before now.

Oh, and look, one is tonight, at 5:00 for 20 people ordering off the menu. Guess I'll stay a bit late and help out the night line cook.

Oh...look, 34 actually showed up, and a bunch of early dinnertime diners as well.

Oh look, the printer is overflowing with tickets.

Oh look! The high was only 97F today with a heat index of 115F Too bad the kitchen feels like 350F.

Oh look, it is 7:54 and I am just getting home. Is this how this whole week is going to go??

On a positive note, my Weekly Specials are selling great, and the homemade soups are moving MUCH faster than the owners favorite bagged concentrate stuff. *Sticks out tongue at owner* Said owner actually complimented the chicken noodle soup. I was rather shocked at that.

Other positive news? We had our first weekly managers meeting today. I was the driver behind this to combat the lack of communication. Like not letting me know I was going to be swamped with parties and have to work late most of the week. Oh, yeah! I used this very day to make my point.

It is going to be a looooooong week. The writing is on the party sheets on the wall.

Was I crazy? I walked to work. The humidity was already unbearable. Suffering for weight loss is good, I guess. Makes the rewards that much more meaningful.

Downtown Chef Tom posted a photo:

"There Is No Better Place To Be Today"

Well, any day actually. What could be better than a beer cooler?? But today especially! It is 34F in here! The high was 99F, and with a dewpoint of 80, the heat index rose to 117F. The worst yet this summer. The line in the kitchen was just unbearable. I moved a prep table so that it was directly under an air conditioning vent, and prayed we had very little business. I was rewarded with a bunch of to-go orders as no one else wanted to actually go out in the heat either. To think, six months ago, there was 3 feet of snow on the ground.

I had a bridal shower to do, along with the weekly specials to prep for. The bridemaid insisted that the vessels for the chicken salad be clear glass, not metalic. I had to describe for her in great detail how the fruit tray would be presented. That speaks for how the day went. I have had a few bridezillas, but a maid-of-honorzilla??? Give me a break, woman! This kitchen feels like 170F. I drank gallons of water, and never had to hit the bathroom once all day. And she is worried the leaf lettuce covers all of the tray and the fruit is arranged so that each color is bold and stands out? I am not having much luck with women this week. No wonder I prefer men.

Oh yeah, a follow on to my recent t-shirt discussion. I have not worn this t-shirt in a while. I put it on this morning, because it is about the only clean one left till I do wash tomorrow. XL, just like the rest, but jeez....

Was I crazy? I walked to work. The humidity was already unbearable. Suffering for weight loss is good, I guess. Makes the rewards that much more meaningful.

Day 227a / 365 - August 7, 20109

Downtown Chef Tom posted a photo:

"Another Long Day"

I went to work early this morning, and walked rather than take the bus. Burn those calories!

I cranked out a wrap tray, a cheese tray with cracker tray, a veggie tray, did Swedish Sauce for the meatball tray, and made two soups for next week, plus assorted prep to get ready for a busy day.

Today was the first annual North Downtown Day (see part b for more on that). And we are hosting "Dueling Pianos" tonight, which meant lots of people arriving early for dinner. So it was a 13 hour day, but lots and lots of revenue, and that is what it is all about! Plus, extra money for me so I can buy clothes that fit! Woohoo!

This is me hanging out, taking a break, sitting amongst all the tables and chairs and staging that needed to be set up for tonights events.
