Main Street Morning - Fire Engine No. 71

Sorry guys I’ve been too busy here lately to keep up on Flickr. I owe you all a good visit.

This picture presented a challenge both in camera and post. We got into the park early for our 8:15 reservation for Crystal Palace, so I was doing a little – empty park shooting – on Main Street USA. This Main Street fire truck came by very quickly. I quickly took one shot but as I was set at -0.7 EV it was WAY underexposed due to the camera metering the sun. So I dialed it up to +1 EV real quick (moving vehicle, gotta hurry!) and fired off a couple more. Well, +1 was still not even close. So that was the challenge in camera. Then, this is one of the photos that I lost the RAW file so all I had to work with was the .jpeg. So normally, if it weren’t for the fire truck, I would have dismissed this photo. But I decided to play around with it a little because I liked the composition enough. To be quite honest, I’m surprised I was able to pull out this much data from a .jpeg! Of course, zoom in and you start to see some weird artifacts, but for the most part a lot of the data was still there. I REALLY would have liked to have the RAW data for this picture. Seriously. But this will have to do. : (

As for the edit – I did all the editing in Capture NX2, strategically utilizing some NIK filters (thanks for the tips Don Sullivan and Cory Disbrow). I quite like how the edit turned out. Something very different looking for my photos… don’t you think?

The girls thought it was AWESOME to be the last ones out of the park at 3:45 am!

Another shot that I had to attempt to edit without the RAW file… this is one I would really have loved to be able to work with the RAW image as it was severely underexposed and I think a lot of detail was lost. I think it’s an okay save, but still kicking myself. Went out and bought four 32GB cards and plan to use slot 2 at all times for redundancy from now on. Ya live and learn.

I think just about everything that could be said about this statue has been said – so I won't express my sentiments. Also, this statue has been photographed about every way possible, which is why I really wanted to make this picture unique. The angle is one thing but I felt it needed more than that to really set it apart, so I chose to up the exposure in RAW and sort of create a high-key photo. The end result is a blown out background, but I kind of like the look for this particular photograph.

Would love to know what you all think about the high-key look here...

This shot is another example of why for me, RAW and tone mapping is the way to go. Yeah, there is a little noise that goes with bringing up the shadows, but for me, it's worth it. You can see the original is way underexposed. Also did some wide angle perspective correction...

This is a fairly tight crop, and yes, I know the sky is chaotic. I guess that's what happens when you leave the shutter open for 104 seconds. Next time I'd like to shoot this again but frame it this way to get better resolution on the castle.

Yes, this is yet another picture of Cinderella Castle. What makes this one unique, however, is that it is a vertical panorama. I took two landscape shots, one of the upper half of the castle and the other of the lower half and foreground and stitched them vertically. In reality I used two shots here out of necessity as I busted my ultra wide angle lens. But when you really think about it, a two-shot 40mm (full frame equiv) panorama is the only way you could get this exact field of view, if I'm understanding right. I remember seeing an incredible shot that Code did with an ultra wide angle lens a few weeks ago. The main difference, other than his is at night, is that I can see by looking at his photo he was a few steps ahead of me – and I actually think I like that composition a little better. But you know, this was one of those experimental things for me and I actually intended on doing much more of this style of shooting but really just kind of forgot. I need to train my mind, in the future, to use this method when I just can't get it all in, in one frame...

This is a three exposure handheld HDR. I worked really hard to “correct” the exposure using HDR but in the end felt it had much better depth and interest by letting the shadows and highlights (mostly shadows though) do their thing. Nothing special on the processing… added “authentic” film grain in post – for no particular reason I guess. Oh and some lens distortion correction...

Two errors that I made with this photo - one - I shot it at f/2.8 on accident and two I didn't quite center the shot up, which is all the more noticeable given it is ultra wide. I guess that's what happens when you're rushing to make a early morning ADR with a seven year old and two ten year olds rushing you along...

Chip & Dale Are So Happy (#2)

I've posted a similar – Chip & Dale with Castle in the background – shot before, but I think this is an improvement on it. I shot this with a 70-200mm f/2.8 with it all the way out at 200mm and wide open to f/2.8. I did this to create an extremely shallow depth of field and compress the background so that it was just the castle. One of the things I love about photography and always learning is that I see a way I can improve on this shot even yet. If I were going to shoot it again I'd use the same focal length but increase the aperture (or decrease, however you want to look at it) to about f/5.6 or f/8 so that the entirety of both Chip & Dale are in focus and this would also make the castle slightly more recognizable.
