Sunset storm over Wellington, Nevada

Jeffrey Sullivan posted a photo:

Sunset two nights ago. The camera is facing east, opposite the setting sun. The sunset orange to blue color transition is called the "Belt of Venus". As the sun sets in the west the shadow of the earth rises in the west, with the warm light of sun on one side and the shadow lit only by local scattered blue sky light. It's pretty common and consistent here, so perhaps it's more visible with the transition projecting onto our dusty air (especially down at Mono Lake where there tends to be a high concentration of ultra-fine dust).

Venus is one of the first things you can see as twilight comes. It's also a planet that you see towards the sun, so if Venus is in the sky at all as twilight progresses, it's always towards the opposite horizon from this event named after it.
Lightning under the Stars

The lightning storms largely haven't quite materialized over the last few days as forecast, so I have to look back to photos from last year to refresh my memory of them. This star trails image featuring 45 individual shots is a 16 x 9 shape because I included the same images I used to make my HD time-lapse video of this event.

The stars of course were never "in front of the cloud", the stars were simply there before the cloud moved there in later shots of the series.

None of my shots from this night are in a "print ready" state yet. I've been too busy working on my California book project, and this storm was just over the border in Nevada.

Sunset Rain Clouds Over Mono Lake

Should I put a Giant Fake Moon in This?
You know, the kind of fake moon that is 4X too large, in a position in the sky which it could never reach, it'll magically not create any moonshine on the water, and it'll be really, really dim and dingy because no one really goes outside at night and knows what the real moon looks like anyway.

Of course no fake moon shot is complete without an overblown story about how the photographer had to creep past tigers, on a cliff, without ropes, with a broken leg, and stitch 8 gazillion photos together, each shot at 1,000,000mm zoom. There are photographers, and there are disingenuous people who act like parodies of photographers. There are some big time fibs being told on the Internet, and they're surprisingly easy to spot..

Seriously though, I looked at the Mono Lake web cam and saw the clouds, arrived at this spot an hour later, took a few pictures, and went home. How hard was that? No hocus pocus, mumbo jumbo or tall tales required.

Then again, the Milky Way might look really cool pasted all over the clouds...

Here's the result of my quick trip to Mono Lake last night. When I arrived there were 4-5 carloads of photographers capturing the sunset, but none of them were there for the moon rise. I told them to stick around for another 10 minutes.

I captured about 400 images, enough for about 13 seconds of video. I'll get that conversion started while I go check out this morning's sunrise.
Star Trails Over Twilight Thunderstorm

I was out to pursue photos of the Lyrid Meteor Shower, but I was treated to something even better: an active thunder storm forming from sunset into the night!

I originally shot this sunset to twilight storm to produce a timelapse video, which I've uploaded to YouTube: youtu.be/I8OEEhKlKzE?hd=1
The lightning starts about 1 minute into the video, and continues well into the night as the stars rise.

The Sierra Nevada (Spanish for "Snowy Range") in California is commonly known as the Range of Light. This is Galen Rowell's old stomping grounds, the Bishop Creek drainage in the Inyo National Forest near his home town of Bishop.
I stumbled across this shot while looking for images from my 2006 Fall Colors trips to post to my new travelogue/photoblog: Active Sole. The image didn't turn out well until I tried processing my 3 bracketed exposures with HDR software.
