New Museum

New Museum of Contemporary Art, 2007
Bowery Str. New York City (SoHo)
SANAA, Kazuyo Sejima Ryue Nishizawa, Arch.

This is pretty much the biggest contrast to Scarpa that I could think of (if one ignores all the non-architecture out there). It turns out that I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It sticks out like a sore thumb among the rows of 3-6 storey structures along Bowery, but it appears as if it is currently undergoing a transformation where singular structures are popping out above the given height (Foster does the same one block to the north).

I will have to admit to borrowing my wife's camera for the morning, not realizing that she had turned-off the auto-focus (usually just using my "pea-shooter" S95, I am not used to having to check on such things). So about an hour of running around and shooting-up the neighborhood turned out fuzzy, except for a few shots where I apparently was the right distance from my subject. Luck.

OK, I think I'll end the tour with this (almost) repetition of the facade. The light was just so great when we came out, but everybody was really cold, so there was not really any time to stand around and look for some more interesting perspectives. I was, at any rate, very glad to have made the trip, but one of my daughters who came with me was sick the next day. What a sacrifice for culture!

After a long discussion as to whether or not this building (and the neighboring theatre as well) should be renovated or replaced, it was decided that they should both be renovated and encorporated into a larger complex. Parts will be significantly changed (the back side, for example) but most interiors will remain as originally planned. In fact, much of will will be restored to the original 50's colors-cheme, if my sources are correct.

If there was any question as to whether a renovation was necessary, a simple tour through any part of the structure (besides where the public goes) is enough to convince anybody that it is high time.

TGV Train Station Guillemins, Liege, Belgium
Santiago Calatrava, architect

We actually made another trip to Belgium within two weeks of the last visit. There is a huge market there along the Maas (river) where one can not only buy the usual market fare like food and flowers, but also the occasional stand with rabbits and chickens and mice, etc. We thought that the children would really like seeing that, but we didn't figure that there would also be puppies for sale. Having recently had twenty puppies in our house (two sets of ten over three years), we thought we were 'safe' from crazy requests from the children that we shoud get a puppy in addition to our own dog who we just had spayed.......how wrong we were.

At any rate, we did return home without a puppy, but with some long faces and perhaps a few presentable images of the train station. During the last visit, the sun was shining so nicely that all the shadows were extremely harsh, so I was looking forward to a little bit greyer weather. I even had to foresight to bring a tripod so that I could expose a littel bit longer, but it was so cold and rainy and windy that I did none of that, resulting in a lot of images for the trash-bin.

Had I not been so cold, I might have taken one more step to the right to free the canopy from the appartment-house on the right, but I didn't.

Really, I was convinced I was only going to add a few more images of this place--only in color--and now this. Bear with me.

The image itself is a little 'grey'...I'd love to see what Silver Efex would do to it.

The blotches in the back are part of a fog bank which we drove through on the way there. I was expecting a competely different typ of atmosphere around the chapel, but this certainly wasn't bad either.

Just for the sake of continuity, I think I'll stick with the black and white photo-essay for a bit, although the colors on that day were very intense (or perhaps because of that!).

It would have been better in horizontal format, but the shot I have like that is with *two pairs* of people on the bench (that makes 4, in words; four! people), which is totally against the rules of architectural photography, where we try to make places as uninhabited-looking as possible. Heaven forbid they look remotely functional!

I really liked this approach (from the back side) and had to think about fortification towers and similar structures which sit with a commanding view over the landscape--not at all uncommon in this area of Germany (The Eifel).
When we left Köln, we could see all of about 50 meters, as the fog was really really thick and I was almost dissapointed when it cleared as we left the Kölner Bucht (weather pocket around Köln). I could imagine this tower imbedded in fog as being pretty powerful (as well).

The moles there also felt quite at home.

Wachendorf, Germany (near Köln)
Peter Zumthor, Architect

We finally made it out to see the chapel, after years of saying that 'this time we're really going to go.' Crazy, considering it took us all of 35 minutes to get to where we started our 'hike'. No, we didn't park on the lot, as a local took us there and showed us an alternate route where the approach is slower. It does make a big difference if one takes half an hour to walk there or if one parks in front.

Guggenheim Museum, NYC, 1944-1957
Frank Lloyd Wright, Architect
Gwathmey Siegel, Architects, addition

Complete with an ice-cream-truck whose design probably hasn't changed much since this building was erected back in the 50's.

The 'empty' feeling here is totally misleading. When I arrived, one could barely see the base because there were so many people standing around outside, and inside was no different. This must have been similar to the miraculous parting of the Red Sea. I had the same kind of luck while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge

www.flickr.com/photos/schroeer-heiermann/5054030849/

The light, however, was perfect (early afternoon).

The addition in the back is done by Gwathmey/Siegel (originally part of the 'New York 5' team of architects which included Richard Meier, Michael graves and John Hejduk, I believe). Upon it's completion it was compared by some cruel critics with the water tank of a toilet, but I think it is a pretty good solution for an addition in such a delicate situation.

Here, one gets an idea of the bell-tower in the reflection, which stands alone on one edge of the plaza. I can't say I like it very much, as aside from the materials, it really has nothing to do with the church. One might notice that is somehow is missing in all of my images.
