Goodbye Cologne

After a good two years in Cologne I'm leaving for Strasbourg, France, but I didn't want to leave without at least one picture of Cologne. So this is the famous Cologne Cathedral at nighttime with the Hohenzollern Bridge to the right and Great St. Martin Church on the left.

To all my visitors: I hope you had a great time and I wish you all the best for 2012 and beyond.

At the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Horticultural Show) 2011 in Koblenz

I noticed that although being a German I haven’t posted many pictures of Germany. So here is a series of pictures I took at our recent visit to the Federeal Horticultural Show (Bundesgartenschau) held from 15 April to 16 October 2011 in Koblenz. It was a day with some nice sunny spells but with many clouds and a lot of rain. Therefore there are not many flowers in the series instead I was focussing on the landscape and the weather.

The main post was taken close to the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) on the banks of the Rhine at its confluence with the Moselle with a look over to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Crossing the Rhine you can see the cable car (established in 2010) one of the attractions for the horticultural show connecting the Rhine shores near the Basilica of St. Kastor with the plateau in front of the fortress.

Dear flickr Friends,

I hope you’ll enjoy this view of Hook Head Lighthouse. I visited this beautiful place on our vacation trip to Ireland this May.

The Hook Lighthouse (also known as Hook Head Lighthouse) is a building situated at the tip of the Hook Peninsula in Country Wexford, in Ireland. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, and the oldest operating lighthouse in the British Isles. It marks the eastern entrance to Waterford Harbour. The current structure has stood for almost 800 years. (from wikipedia)

I don't know how you feel about these events but we just couldn't resist.

A good opportunity for me to to get some action shots (I don't do that very often). I hope you like my selection of pictures from this fascinating event.

A good opportunity for me to to get some action shots (I don't do that very often). I hope you like my selection of pictures from this fascinating event.

Can there be anything special about a 1,267 feet 386 m high Rock in the landscape?
Well, please join me on a trip to Devils Tower, scroll down and and see for yourself. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

As Devils Towers hexagonal columns reminded me of Giant's Causeway you might like to compare with this .

Some more information from wikipedia on Devils Tower National Monument :

Devils Tower (Lakota: Mato Tipila, which means “Bear Lodge”) is a monolithic igneous intrusion or volcanic neck located in the Black Hills near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,112 feet (1,558 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (5.45 km2).

Tribes including the Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Lakota, and Shoshone had cultural and geographical ties to the monolith before European and early American immigrants reached Wyoming. Their names for the monolith include: Aloft on a Rock (Kiowa), Bear's House (Cheyenne, Crow), Bear's Lair (Cheyenne, Crow), Bear's Lodge (Cheyenne, Lakota), Bear's Lodge Butte (Lakota), Bear's Tipi (Arapaho, Cheyenne), Tree Rock (Kiowa), and Grizzly Bear Lodge (Lakota).
The name Devil's Tower originated in 1875 during an expedition led by Col. Richard Irving Dodge when his interpreter misinterpreted the name to mean Bad God's Tower. This was later shortened to the Devil's Tower.

Grand Teton NP - Mormon Row - Thomas Moulton Homestead

The only morning on our vacation trip I left the hotel early for a photo excursion on my own was well worth it. It was the only day in Grand Teton NP without rain and lots of sunshine. This is sort of part I of this trip: "Sunrise"

Welcome to Mormon Row Historic District

Somewhere I have read that Country Magazine called the barn above "The Most Photographed Barn in America." due to the dramatic Teton Range rising behind it and I don't doubt it.
There are two well-known barns in Jackson Hole. In my main post you can see the famous southern barn built by Thomas Alma Moulton in the early 1910s. North of this (in one of my pictures in the comments is the John Moulton Barn. The T.A. Moulton Barn is all that remains of the homestead built by Thomas Moulton and his sons between about 1912 and 1945. It sits west of the road known as Mormon Row, in an area called Antelope Flats, between the towns of Kelly and Moose.

Yellowstone NP - Lamar Valley Bison Encounter - Close the window RIGHT NOW and get going !!!

anadelmann posted a photo:

Dear Flickr Friends, I haven't disappeared completely and don't intend to do so. In fact, I have just extended my pro account. That said, I don't have a lot of time for flickr either, the same problem that many of you seem to have too.

After my last post we left for a one month vacation trip to the U.S. and I'm still trying to finish work on my pictures from a very fascinating trip. We spent a good three weeks on a round trip from Denver (Colorado) with a week of Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park as our scheduled highlights. On our way we got a chance to see Mount Rushmore NM, Badlands NP, Devils Tower NM, Craters of the Moon NM, Flaming Gorge NRA, Dinosaur NM and Rocky Mountain NP and some other pretty interesting places. What can I say? I do hope to be able to share at least some of my pictures with you and find more time to enjoy yours.

Todays capture is a result of a fascinating, impressive but finally a bit scary encounter in Lamar Valley. It was an unplanned excursion into the North-East of the Park due to bad weather but the bad weather may have helped us to see more of the wildlife.

When those two bisons approached on the right side of the road we just stopped to let them pass. Some 50 yards in front of us they started to cross the street and I got the opportunity to start taking some pictures. My wife got a bit nervous as they continued to come closer but I was just thrilled ... until the first one finally turned to me as if to say "I don't like you!" and I quickly followed my wive's advice / order ...

A wonderful day to capture those Grape Hyacinths (Muscari - Traubenhyazinthen). Below you'll find two more pictures from that day one showing Aubrieta and Arabis (Blaukissen & Gänsekresse) and another from another lawn plus a portrait of me (taken while I shot the grape hyacinths).

Have a wonderful time, everyone.

Sanibel Island Light

Before I start this years big vacation trip (next month) I wanted to show at least some more highlights from last years trip.

This series is from our short trip to Sanibel Island where I couldn't resist visiting the lighthouse and to enjoy the sunset. It's a truly wonderful place.

Some more info from wikipedia on the Sanibel Island Light:
The Sanibel Island Light is the first lighthouse on Florida's Gulf coast north of Key West and the Dry Tortugas. It is located on the eastern tip of Sanibel Island, and was built to mark the entrance to San Carlos Bay for ships calling at the port of Punta Rassa, across San Carlos Bay from Sanibel Island.

The lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The Coast Guard leases the light station site to the city of Sanibel, Florida.

Bean World

anadelmann posted a photo:

I'm still quite busy my friends but whenever I can I try to catch up working on last years pictures. I arrived at processing material from the last big trip of our three years in the U.S. to Chicago - last September (I hope I'll find some time to continue posting the pics from our Florida trip).

When I was in Chicagos Millenium Park with the already famous Cloud Gate (The Bean) close by I remembered a description in a book (Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers - The Ultimate Workshop by Jeff Schewe and Martin Evening) about how to create an aerial fisheye lens effect and thought why not give it a try. Well I did some things right and some things wrong (only using 8 shots for a 360˚ pano is one of the bad things and not having your tripod available is another) but with a few extra hours in post processing and reducing the resolution I believe it looks quite okay for a first try.

I found a nice tutorial afterwards which describes quite well how these "polar panoramas" can be created at Dirk's Photo Blog (note step 3: "The rest is just a little digital darkroom work")

Key West Light

anadelmann posted a photo:

This is from Day 17 of last year's vacation trip to Florida, a warm and humid day in Key West, Florida. As I do love lighthouses I am posting Key West Lighthouse (together with two views from the top) today but if ever I can find the time I'll come back to post more Key West impressions.

More info from wikipedia:
The Key West Light is located in Key West, Florida. The first Key West lighthouse was destroyed by the Great Havana Hurricane of 1846. As both lighthouses serving Key West had been destroyed in the hurricane, a ship, the Honey, was acquired and outfitted as a lightship to serve as the Sand Key Light until new lighthouses could be built. The new tower for the Key West Light was completed in 1849. It was 66 feet tall and stood on ground about 15 feet above sea level. In 1873 the lantern was replaced, adding three feet to the height of the tower. The growth of trees and taller buildings in Key West began to obscure the light, and in 1894 the tower was raised twenty feet, placing the light about 100 feet above sea level.

After the Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Light in 1969, it was turned over to Monroe County, which in turn leased it to the Key West Arts and Historical Society. The society operates the lighthouse and its associated buildings as the Key West Light House and Keeper's Quarters Museum.

I am very happy that I finally finished work on the pictures from last years vacation trip down to Florida and here is my picture from day 16 (of 26). We drove most of the day from Miami Beach down to Key West which - obviously - was the turning point of our vacation trip. On one of the keys we had a brief encounter with some dolphins and so we just arrived in time to get to Mallory Square and enjoy the sunset. I certainly overdid it a bit in post-processing but that sunset was a dream and I couldn't resist to tweak it even a bit more.

Some additional info from wikipedia:

Mallory Square is a plaza located in the city of Key West, Florida, United States.

It is located on the waterfront in Key West's historic Old Town, adjacent to the cruise ship port. It is located just west of the northern end of Duval Street, facing the Gulf of Mexico. It runs the entire length of Wall Street. Adjacent to the square are the Key West Shipwreck Historeum Museum and the Old Post Office and Customshouse.

It is the location of the "Sunset Celebration", which is considered one of the main tourist attractions of the city. The "Sunset Celebration" involves hundreds of tourists who arrive each night to view the sunset. The celebration includes arts and crafts exhibitors, street performers and food carts. It begins two hours before sunset, every day of the year.

I'm back from a week in a beautiful little Bavarian town named Greding and would like to share some impressions of this little gem in the Altmühl Valley Nature Park.

Apart from that I would like to say thank you for all your comments, and faves, I received during this weeks postings. I particularly appreciate your comments concerning the additional pictures in the comments as well as remarks concerning aspects that you don't like in the pictures. Your criticism is always welcome.

Some information from wikipedia:
Greding is a town in the district of Roth, in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated 28 km southeast of Roth bei Nürnberg and 32 km north of Ingolstadt (in the south-eastern corner of Middle Franconia).

Greding is surrounded by a 1.25km town wall with fortified gate houses and towers. The wall was erected during the rule of the Prince Bishop Friedrich IV, Count of Öttingen (1383 - 1415). A great fire in 1503 destroyed two gate houses, a tower and part of the town hall. Today, 20 towers can be seen around the town, almost all used as private houses.

The Basilica of St. Martin:
This predominantly 12-Century church stands on a hill overlooking the town and is a conspicuous local landmark. St Martins is the largest Romanesque basilica in the former diocese of Eichstätt. It was consecrated by Bishop Otto (1182 - 1196).

To the left of St Martin's Church in the cellar of the former Michael's Chapel, dating from the early 12th century, is a so-called Charnel House. This was first used in the 14th century to store the bones of the dead as the graveyard itself became too full. The bones of about 2500 corpses can be seen behind an iron grille.

Panning Test in front of the Atomium (Brussels, Belgium)

And now for something completely different ....

This is from my first panning experiment. Actually this is the only capture that worked well. It is basically SOOC and I admit that I was a bit surprised at how it came out (1.3 sec exposure).

What do you think?

It was taken in front of

The Atomium which is a monument built for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by André Waterkeyn, it is 102-metres (335 ft) tall, with nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.
Tubes which connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre enclose escalators connecting the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels, Belgium. Each sphere is 18 metres in diameter. (from wikipedia)

This one is dedicated to gwiwer . I guess you'll understand (please consider following the link to have a look at that classical subject).

Although I love those blue hour and sunrise/sunset shots I feel I need to post some daylight shots too and that means returning to our vacation trip. I hope you don't mind.
Day 15 of our vacation trip was spent walking through Miami Beach's Art Deco District. This was definitely one of the highlights for me and I think I will come back to pictures from there once I find the time.

In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all represented in the District. The Historic District is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the East, Lenox Court on the West, 6th Street on the South and Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal to the North. The movement to preserve the Art Deco District's architectural heritage was led by former interior designer Barbara Capitman, who now has a street in the District named in her honor.(From wikipedia)

Almost two months without a post and missing my second flickr anniversary (last week) ... Well, I'm still very busy, had only a few opportunities to take pictures since our move back to Germany and barely time to work on those new pictures while I still have work to do on our vacation trip pictures from last May.

Well at least everybody is fine here and I hope you all had a good start into 2010.

Todays series is something I was longing to do for quite a while: A photoshoot in my hometown of Cuxhaven. During our stay over Christmas we looked outside every morning to see whether it might be a good day for some sunrise captures. Christmas Eve was the only chance we got. We went down to the harbor to a place called Alte Liebe and got at least some sunshine to compensate for the cold

Cuxhaven Sunrise

We went down to the harbor to a place called Alte Liebe and got at least some sunshine to compensate for the cold

anadelmann posted a photo:

This is a capture from the beginning of our vacation trip showing Denver Civic Center Cultural Complex. Below you will find more mainly architectural shots from Civic Center including Denver Art Museum (Frederic C. Hamilton building), Denver Public Library, Colorado State Capitol and a pano covering all of those buildings (about 300+ degrees; improvised handheld shots stitched together using PS CS 4).

Some additional information from wikipedia about Denver Civic Center:

Civic Center is a neighborhood and park in Denver, Colorado. The area is known as the center of the civic life in the city, with numerous institutions of arts, government, and culture as well as numerous festivals, parades, and protests throughout the year.

Civic Center is located in central Denver just south of the Central Business District. It is probably identified in the minds of Denverites as the "Golden Triangle." The borders of this neighborhood are Speer Boulevard on the west and south, Broadway on the east, and Colfax Avenue on the north.

Among the institutions in the Civic Center are Denver Art Museum, and the Denver Public Library's Central Library along the parks south side, the Colorado State Capitol and the City and County Building of Denver along the east and west axis of the park, the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building on the park's north side, and the Colorado History Museum and the Colorado State Judicial Building towards the southeast of the park.
