Year of the Dragon

NaPix -- (Time out) posted a photo:

This Dragon kite was made by Master Vietnamese kite maker Nguyen Van Be from Hue, vietnam. He is considered to be the most renowned Vietnamese kite maker, based among other reasons on the number of overseas festivals he has attended (nine in France alone). The tale of this kite is 100 meter long.

Tết is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, though exceptions arise due to the one-hour time difference between Hanoi and Beijing resulting in the alternate calculation of the new moon. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. There are a lot of customs practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestral worshipping, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.
Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).
New Year Eve -- Feb. 13

The Hoa đào, Apricot, represents the Tết, New Year and every house in Vietnam will have a fresh blossoming branch at the entrance. In the North it’s the pink variety, while in the south it’s the Yellow flower called Hoa Mai. The streets on Hanoi are filledd with vendors of all kind of flowers, but especially the Hoa đào.

Here are two of my favorite images from the Hmong life in Sapa. The rooster in Lao Chai village, near Sapa, Vietnam, was one of the first images shot a few years ago. Every Hmong home has one rooster who is the guardian of the house. The Jumping girl was last January on one of the many celebrations of the Lunar New Year. This year lunar New Year will start on Valentine Day.
During a recent outdoor festival for the lunar New Year that took place between the Hmong villages of Cat Cat and Sinh Chai, 3 km. from Sapa. Several hundreds of Hmong gathered for yet another celebration. A graceful Hmong woman in full holiday dress of shining brand new clothing, all dyed with Indigo Blue and beautifully hand embroidery, that took her many month to complete. You can still see some the indigo dye on her hands. The design on her sleeves and belt would indicate the village and region she comes from. It all looks beautiful to us, but the Hmong can tell instantly. When women meet, they always examine, compare and complement each other work.
This was my planned Valentin’s Day image, but alas, the pair of dove won :)
So here it is, 14 days later. During an outdoor festival for the lunar New Year that took place between the Hmong villages of Cat Cat and Sinh Chai, 3 km. from Sapa. Several hundreds of Hmong gathered for yet another celebration.

There were many competitions in ‘tag-of-war’ between villages teams, climbing and balancing on Bamboo polls, catching the goat blind folded and the traditional race to the top of the mountain and many more. Lots of fun for everyone.

One of the big attraction is the giant bamboo swing, were people always lineup for. This one is in the center park of Sapa town and you can see the Sapa’s most famous landmark, the Catholic Church. While over half the Hmong in this region are Catholic, they also celebrate The Lunar New Year.

The official NY celebration is over, but people continue with related activities, pre wedding gathering and some new home building among them.
The Black Hmong make there own clothing from Hemp and dye them with Indigo Blue to a point that it almost look black. On holidays and weekends they will wear the set that is ‘shiny’ with great pride.
Yesterday was the last day of the nine days New Year celebration, culminating with an Outdoor festival in TaVan village. There were several thousands of Hmong and Dzay people from neighboring villages and many contests and activities took place, from buffalo plow race to catching a goat blindfolded.

Above is an image from past celebration at the Sinh Chai village, which will be held again in two days from now. (Its not shown, but the front end of the bamboo is held by a rope that adds a lot of ‘swing’ :)
The bench, Split horn, cymbals, paper burning, gong drums, the altar…

During the trance, a shaman is transported to another world via a "flying horse," a wooden bench usually no wider than the human body. The bench acts as a form of transportation to the other world. Buffalo horn tips are thrown to the ground to determine which way the soul has gone. The shaman wears a cloth mask while he or she is reaching a trance state. The mask not only blocks out the real world, so the shaman can concentrate, but also acts as a disguise from un-friendly spirits in the spirit world.

Taken during a recent New Year shaman ceremony conducted at Giang ta Chai village by a Shawoman Ly Thi so.
The most important ceremony of the New Year celebration is a long event lasting up to six hours. Led by a Shaman, or a Shawoman, who communicate with the spirits and asks for their blessing for the village and every member in the community. It would include dancing with Gongs, fire and offerings and the Shaman will tell the future for the coming year to each family and a great meal and lots of drinking.

Here are the women dancing, Ker, Khu and Chi from Ly Loa Chai village. This is one of those images, that really needs the sounds and smell of fire, to appreciate.
Yesterday was the 2nd day of the nine days celebration and Sapa was still under fog. Here is Denh (Linh) a black Hmong who now lives in Hanoi. She came home for the celebration. Here she is having fun walking the swinging Bamboo while her friend helps by steadying it. It’s a custom to eat a lot of sugar canes during this time, as you can see one of the watchers holding one.

The Black Hmong are the largest minority in the Sapa region, accounting for about 50% of the population of about 50,000.
