Toronto's haunted bank vault (ISO 1600)

view[ ¤ ]finder posted a photo:

The inside of an old bank vault door in the former Bank of Montreal, Front and Yonge Streets, Toronto. Built in 1885, the building now houses the Hockey Hall of Fame and the original Stanley Cup is stored in the vault when not on display.

This bank is alleged to be haunted by two ghosts:

In the early 1900s, a young woman was shot and killed in the bank during a robbery. Her apparition is said to wander the premises, especially the spot where she was killed, exactly here in front of the vault. Witnesses to the hauntings say a woman in an old-fashioned dress sometimes appears in front of the vault or engages in poltergeist activity.

The bank is also haunted by a ghost named Dorothy, a teller apparently spurned by the bank manager. One night she took her own life in the bank with the manager’s pistol. Since then, people have said they’ve heard the sound of a woman crying.

Hmm, these days, the sound of crying in the Hockey Hall of Fame is more likely to be fans, distraught over the NHL players lock-out!
Political party saviour?

Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, and MP for Montréal-Papineau, Justin Trudeau.

In my other job as a non-partisan political activist (emphasis on non-partisan!), I occasionally come across prominent Canadian politicians. Some of you who are Canadian may recognize this fellow and those elsewhere may have heard of his father, the late, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. I saw Justin in January 2012 while covering his party's convention for a political blog. This photo was snapped as he was preparing to have his moustache shaved off to raise funds for charity.

The photo, I think, is also a great example of the superb image quality of the Fujifilm X10. You can literally count every eyelash. I love this camera!

I don't like politics or religion discussions on Flickr so please, no partisan comments. If everyone behaves and tempers their personal views of Trudeau and his party (positive or negative), I may be tempted to upload more photos of other political figures! :)

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong made history as the first person to ever walk on the moon. The sad news of his death at age 82 on Saturday reminded me that I had saved my Halifax, Nova Scotia newspaper printed the day after he landed at Tranquility Base and uttered those famous words: "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

For any of us who grew up during the space race in the 60s and 70s, and especially Canadians like me who religiously watched the CTV documentary Here Come the Seventies, the moon landing was supposed to be a harbinger of what was to come.

Here Come the Seventies was a half-hour documentary series that looked ahead at anticipated technological marvels and innovations we could expect during the 70s. The show told us there'd be a colony on Mars and we'd all be traveling by electric cars and personal jet packs before the end of the decade - which, of course, we all believed.

Instead, things turned out quite differently. Space exploration budgets have been cut, even the robotic Canadarm, the pride of the Canadian Space Agency, has faded into history. It was recently retired, along with the Space Shuttle program, and is now little more than a museum artifact from a bygone era.

To quote that old sage Yogi Berra, "The future ain't what it used to be." Once, the future was spaceflight.
Film versus Digital

view[ ¤ ]finder posted a photo:

This is a 100% comparison of scanned Fujichrome Provia 100F film shot with a Nikon F80 and the same view taken with a digital Nikon D7000 & Fujifilm X10.

Note: Although the caption above says the Fuji X10 was shot in 12MP mode, in reality, once the image is cropped to match the 2:3 aspect ratio, the dimensions change from 3000x4000 to 2664x4000, which is actually 10.7MP.

Also, noise reduction with Imagenomic Noiseware Pro was applied in post to the Nikon F80 scan and the Fuji X10 image. The Nikon D7000 image in the middle had no noise so no noise reduction was applied.

Full analysis and hi res version, click here.

Conclusion? For anyone who thinks film is dead, think again. With a good scanner, some tech skills and a $25 '70s era SLR, you can easily get pro results that few could tell the difference from images shot on a $1200 DSLR.

And for those wondering if the Fujifilm X10 can match or exceed film; the answer is "yes" in sharpness, "yes" in color, "occasionally" in dynamic range and "always" in convenience and portability.

The sun emerges from behind Toronto's CN Tower.

The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in Toronto, Canada. Standing 553.33 metres (1,815.4 ft) tall, it was completed in 1976, becoming the world's tallest free-standing structure and world's tallest tower at the time. It held both records for 34 years until the completion of Dubai's Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower in China. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere and a signature icon of Toronto's skyline, attracting more than two million international visitors annually.
