I took my sons to Ceres to go and do the longest zipline in Africa and while they were doing that I went out on the streets to find some strangers.

As I were walking down the main street Lionel came around a corner and nearly bumped into me. The minute I saw the hat, I knew I wanted him for the project.

I approached him and asked for his portrait to which he immediately agreed.

My first 46 strangers were an absolute pleasure and I loved every moment of it, I also had only two rejections in the whole period. This walk in Ceres were the absolute opposite to my previous experiences and I'm battling to understand why.

Only tree things changed for this walk:

1. The town: Could that make such a big difference, would a whole town be more suspicious than the previous 10 or more locations I visited.

2. Time of walk: I normally do my walks first thing in the morning where this were a mid day walk. Could that make a difference?

3. My approach: I normally don't lead with the question if I could take someones portrait, I first engage the stranger in normal conversation and then ask for the portrait, where on this outing I approached all my subjects directly. I think this would have made the biggest difference, I'm however not sure that it would have this big an influence with about 75% of the people I asked refusing me today.

Also interesting to note the emotional effect today had on me. When I came home I told my wife like I felt I did not want to publish any of the strangers I got as I did not establish a proper rapport with any of them. So in short I felt the whole day were a failure. In the end I however decided to post Lionel's picture because it were the most interesting of the day and it also gave me te opportunity to share my experience with you.

Well the winter holiday break has come to an end and my sons are back to school. My oldest son goes to Boland Landbou, a secondary agriculture school close to Paarl and Wellington and this weekend the school had home rugby so my wife went through to volunteer in the tuck shop and It gave me the opportunity to take a drive and go and find some strangers before going back to the school to watch some rugby.

On these drives I like to visit the laborers cottages on some of the surrounding farms, you normally meet interesting people and there is no shortage of interesting photo opportunities. So this time a stopped at the Zanddrift farms laborer cottages and my next 3 strangers will be from here. Also if you visit the Zanddrift set you will get a better Idea about this environment.

One of the persons that made an immediate impression on me were Gran Lena and were the first person I asked for a portrait, I took a bit of convincing her, but luckily she agreed.

It was Saturday morning early and I was walking my favorite streets of the small village of Wellington when I passed as small shoe repair shop that has always looked so interesting from outside and decided to go in to get a closer view.

This is where I met Henry, a affable gentleman that were quite happy to tell me his life story, most of which revolves around the shoe repair shop.

Apparently he walked into the shop when he was 14 years old and asked the old man that owned the shop if he could come and work for him. The old man said no as he reckoned Henry still had to go to school, to which Henry replied “no need for that, as the only thing I want to do is repair shoes”. In the end the old man relented and Henry started working for him. It’s now 40 years later and Henry is still in the shoe repair shop.

It was great meeting you Henry, thank you for the great story.

On fathers day I was walking the streets of a small town called Philadelphia that lies about 30 Km's north of Cape Town when I met Loryn infront of her house.

I said good morning and she greeted me back with a nice smile on which I then commented on how peaceful and quiet it was in their little village, and so we struck up a conversation talking about their little village.

I Asked if I could take her portrait, and she said sure. Thank you Loryn.

After my walk I returned to the pavilion where my wife and sister were waiting for me. As I walked up to the top where they were sitting I spotted Erika sitting next to them.

I asked Erika if se would consider becoming one of my strangers and with a bit of encouragement from my sister she agreed. We had a nice chat about the project and my sister showed Erica some of my 100 strangers on her phone.

Erika also mentioned that she has always liked it to be photographed, and I hope my attempt will be to her satisfaction.

As I continued my walk around the A field of Boland Landbou I spotted oom Bertie watching the ongoing game wearing his Boland Landbou supporters cap.

I approached oom Bertie where he was sitting with the rest of his family and introduced myself and asked if he would consider becoming part of my project. I think he might have declined but he never got the opportunity as he's family basically forced him to do it. I found out that he were visiting he's children for the weekend and cam to watch his grand children play.

His daughter asked me if I could post he's portrait earlier so that they could show it to him before he went back home, but unfortunately, that is difficult for me as the sequence of photos and the little story for each actually forms part of a bigger journey.

Oom Bertie and family, thank you for understanding.

At the time of my walk, 4 rugby games were being played on the different rugby fields and as I passed between the C and D fields I spotted Louise whom were on medical duty. As the demographics of my project seems to focus on slightly older subjects I saw tis as a opportunity to try to get a portrait of a young beautiful lady.

When I approached Louise she just finished attending to one of the school boys and were still wearing rubber gloves, I asked her for her portrait and after explanation of the project she agreed. After taking a couple of quick shots, showed here the results on the LCD, which she seemed to like. Hope the final product does not disappoint when she sees it online

After my breakfast I head back to Boland Landbou School to watch the under 19A game. When I got there, the second last games were in progress and it gave me the opportunity to go and find some more strangers.

On my walk I spotted the vice-principal's wife and quickly stopped to hear how their holiday went, standing with her were Marissa whom immediately made an impression on me with her big shades and interesting headband. I told them about the project and Asked Marissa if I could get her portrait to which she graciously agreed. It turned out that her husband were one of the rugby teams coaches.

The last of the three strangers I targeted for my visit to Paarl works as a waiter at the coffee shop I had breakfast at on my last photo walk in Paarl and as I have not had breakfast yet it worked out just about perfect.

As I arrived at the coffee shop the first person to greet me was Nehemia and also my stranger, and as he showed me to my table I ordered a cup of coffee to start with. On his return trip with the coffee and to get the rest of my order, I asked him for his portrait to which he agreed with a great smile.

We had a nice conversation and it turned out that he plans to go and study Photography from the beginning of next year. Nehemia is a really nice guy and I hope he persist and becomes a good photographer.

After I left Ronny, and on my way to the third stranger I were targeting for the day I walked past Elizabeth a parking warden and the minute I saw her I knew that I wanted her as one of my strangers.

I approached her and we had the normal discussion on the project after which she agreed to the portrait. When I was done she asked me to ask everyone viewing her portrait to pray for sanity in the world, as this was the morning after the Norway massacre.

Elizabeth thank you for reminding us that we're all interconnected and that even things happening on different continents affect us all.

My next stranger sells his wares in a small craft market not far from where Edmil, my previous stranger sells his paper. So a short walk later and as I neared the craft market I were relieved to see Ronny were on his post.

The last time I passed, Ronny were talking to about everyone that passed and this time were the same. I waited for an opportunity to get a word with him and asked if I could get his portrait, to which he responded "It's my hat that attracted you to me, isn't it" and then agreed to the portrait.

Ronny sells furniture he makes from recovered oregon pine beams and planks. One of his specialities is picture frames made from oregon pine but left with the original paint that flakes in places which gives it a real old world feel, can just imagine some of my strangers in those frames.

Well I'm sure I will se Ronny again, will have to get some of those frames.

After leaving Zanddrift I decided to return to old hunting grounds, the Paarl where I have previously done some photo walks and noticed some charters that I wanted to see if I could get their portraits. At the beginning of this trip I had 3 specific individuals in mind so let's see how it goes.

The first person I wanted to ask were Edmil, a newspaper salesman on the busiest corner in Paarl. What made an impression on me is the great facial expressions he uses in enticing passers-by to buy his paper. Well I walked up to him this time and asked if I could get his picture and before I could tell him about the project he asked which news paper I was from, I said I'm not from the newspaper but that I were doing the 100 strangers project. I think he was a little disappointed but in any case let me get my portrait.

As I walked back from the Zanddrift laborer cottages to my car, I found Anna next to the road waiting on a lift to take her into town for shopping. I at first decided not to ask her as I don't want to overdo a specific group but when I got to my car and started writing down al the names and little stories I got confused between all the names and stories.

I decided to ask Anna for help and se was great at helping me out. I then asked her for her portrait and she agreed. I'm so glad I did that, because when I got home and after processing the images I liked hers better than some of the others.

Arguably the biggest sport in South Africa and definitely in the Western Cape is rugby and you will most properly notice that in the headgear of a lot of the strangers in my stream.

Back at Zanddrift, the second stranger I asked for a portrait were Polly, a nice soft-spoken guy with a great face, and I'm glad he accepted to become a stranger. Polly is obviously his nickname and we discussed it, I'm just so sorry I forgot to ask him why he got this particular nickname, could have been an interesting story.

Just as I were about to give up on finding a fishermen for my 100 strangers project, I spotted 4 fishermen about to launch a boat to go out to sea. The oldest fisherman amongst the group were oom Piet and I approached him for a portrait, again the normal project discussion and he agreed.

Oom Piet were definitely respected by the other fishermen and mentioned that they could not believe that he allowed my to take the photo. In any case they were off to sea in two boats, one with a motor and one had to be rowed. Oom Piet and one of the younger men got into the row-boat and the younger man started rowing under the constant criticism from oom Piet.

Well I hope they were successful as they were quite worried about a weather system that were moving in.

For reference oom means uncle in Afrikaans and is used as a form of respect when addressing older males.
