Lower Falls, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Jill Clardy posted a photo:

To see this spectacular vista up close you have to hike down Uncle Tom's Trail from the rim into the canyon. On the map, Uncle Tom's Trail is just a squiggly little line and appears to be a very short hike, maybe a 1/4 mile. What the map doesn't show is that it's straight down the canyon wall ! I was so intent on finding the trailhead that I didn't read the signs (both of which are posted below). Actually I'm glad I didn't see the signs, as I might have talked myself out of it, and never would have seen this.

This is composed of 9 images, blended in Photomatix then stitched together to form a vertorama. You're so close to the falls that even the widest angle lens wouldn't be able to get it all in.

Here's what the sign says:

"Hugging the canyon wall is a metal staircase that will lead you to an amazing view of Lower Falls. This modern day version of Uncle Tom's Trail descends about 500 feet (150 m) below the canyon rim. Wear sturdy walking shoes with good tread to safely maneuver the perforated steel stairway. Be prepared for more than 300 steps."

Tomorrow I will post images of the steep metal staircase as seen from the opposite rim of the canyon. Then you'll see how challenging it really was !

Yellowstone River

Jill Clardy posted a photo:

View from Artist's Point above the Lower Falls. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone carved over the eons by the Yellowstone River.

I could have stood here for hours admiring the breathtaking view and framing different compositions; but elbowing aside the other tourists to get a good spot to set up the tripod at the rail is so exhausting ! :)

This is a vertorama - stacked horizontally. I posted another view previously (see below)

as described by Rudyard Kipling in 1891:
I looked into a gulf seventeen hundred feet deep, with eagles and fish-hawks circling far below. And the sides of that gulf were one wild welter of color—crimson, emerald, cobalt, ochre, amber, honey splashed with port wine, snow white, vermilion, lemon, and silver gray in wide washes. The sides did not fall sheer, but were graven by time, and water, and air into monstrous heads of kings, dead chiefs—men and women of the old time. So far below that no sound of its strife could reach us, the Yellowstone River ran a finger-wide strip of jade green.

Classic view of the Lower Falls from the Artist's Point, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone NP. The first glimpse of this awe-inspiring view will make you gasp; you and the hundreds of other people all crowding around the railing taking self portraits, group portraits, long exposures, point-n-shoot snaps. Then the tourist bus leaves and you may get a better chance at the rail for a short while before the next bus arrives....

To give you an idea of the scale here, look at the large view; just to the right of the top of the falls is a viewing platform crowded with tiny people.

After viewing the canyon from multiple vista points on 2 different days, I think I've figured out the source of the name Yellowstone !

It seems that many people only visit the geysers and thermal features at Yellowstone and miss the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. It is jawdropping beautiful - steep, colorful cliffs rising above the deep canyon carved by the Yellowstone River, and punctuated by several beautiful waterfalls. It also seems to be the area from which Yellowstone earned its name - the canyon walls are lined with yellow stone that glows beautifully in the early morning light as on this day when we there at the upper rim trail.

It's interesting to look at the map view - the canyon is a deep gash easily visible from the satellite

The falls viewed from above after a difficult climb up a steep hill on a very hot day... (whine, whine, whimper...)

But it was worth the effort for the breathtaking vista; we discovered when we reached the top of the trail that we could have driven there; but driving is for wimps and old people and I'm not that old !

The not-very-cleverly named falls on the McCloud River in the shadow of magnificent Mt. Shasta. Lower Falls, Middle Falls & Upper Falls are accessible from the River Trail. ~50 ft. high and 100 ft. wide
This is a handheld HDR and a bit fuzzy since I wasn't ambitious enough to haul along the tripod - just hiking at this altitude is difficult enough for me !

McWay Falls

I've see so many images of this spectacular place over the years, and finally found time to stop on our way north on Highway 1 today. Unfortunately, we were not there at the optimum time of day and couldn't wait several hours for the sun to illuminate the cliff face. I will definitely be stopping by here again. It's just a brief stroll from the parking lot on a sandy path and boardwalk; however you are confined strictly to the path, so trying to get any unique comps is impossible. On the other hand, the pristine cove and beach are inaccessible, so you don't need to worry about people ruining your photo or leaving trash behind... We even saw a sea otter bouncing around among the waves, getting bashed against the rocks - I hope he survived :)

The falls drop 80 feet into the ocean and flow year round from a rushing creek.

I'm sure the falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone have been photographed approximately 1,638,492,998 times, and have been the subject of some famous artwork by Thomas Moran, among others; but seeing it in person is so overwhelming that I couldn't put the camera down.

To provide some perspective, look at the tiny people on the viewing platform just to the right. and by all means, press L to see this in the lightbox !

This is the view from Lookout Point on the north rim early in the morning. The sun warms the colorful rock walls as the waterfall descends into the misty gloom deep in the canyon.

We arrived at the vista point at Upper Falls about the same time as a busload of elderly tourists clutching their P&S cameras, so there was quite a bit of jostling at the rail; however I managed not to bump any of them over the edge with my tripod. I waited them out and find a good spot to set up my tripod. The loud rush of the water was audible even from this distance. The small platform just to the right of the top of the falls where there are several people admiring the falls provides scale in this scene. I wish I had thought to use a filter to hold back the sky a bit, but maybe next time....
