47 - Gathering

Each year, when the days get shorter, the nights longer, and the weather colder, the West Pier in Brighton is made home to at least a bazillion starlings. These little creatures fly around in spectacular formations and look like a shoal of fish in the sky. It's amazing to watch and utterly mesmerising.

Most of the photos that you see are of the formations against a fantastic sunset sky. I'd initially set out for a similar effect but the sunset refused to cooperate. I quite like this as an alternative to the norm. Although the starlings aren't in a bizarre formation, and only part of the flock was included in the picture, the inclusion of the West Pier provides a location for this gathering of skyfish.

47 - Music

I thought about taking a picture of the equaliser graph (?) on my parents old stereo...Unfortunately the shots I took of that were pretty poor. I was just about to give up for the night and I'd started to clear up my room when I stumbled upon my headphones.

Because I don't own any musical instruments, I decided I'd depict the theme through the medium that I seem to access music most.

My headphones have taken a battering recently, and they look pretty tatty...this is made worse by the magnification effect of the macro lens that I used. Luckily the depth of field managed to remove most of the worn areas, but I added an additional bit of blur in Photoshop, then I added a black and white layer and boosted the contrast in Curves.

It was far from still tonight. This is a 14 minute exposure. Monster waves were responsible for my camera bag getting soaked. Luckily most of my kit was on the tripod already...only a couple of bits got damp. Will make an attempt to go back to this spot on when there is a full moon and the tide is out a bit.

46 - Wind

So the south of England has not had a breath of wind for the past week or so. Trees are barely rustling (partially due to a reduced number of leaves), largely because the wind refused to tie in with my photography project.

To combat this I went home and took it upon myself to take charge of the elements. I lit a candle, set up my macro lens and gently gave the flame a fanning using a nearby postcard. The exposure was just over a second and this seems to show the flicker of the flame best.

45 - Texture

I nipped to the beach today in the hope of finding some smooth driftwood to photograph. There wasn't any around but I did find this texturous treat on one of the groynes.

The macro lens really brings out the texture, especially as it looks fairly smooth when not so magnified. I applied a curves filter to increase the contrast, and angled and cropped the shot to make the shot more interesting.

44 - Memories

I recently uncovered a treasure trove of old photos from the early '80s. In most of the photos featured I wasn't even born, in fact I'm only in one of the photos here and all you can see are my feet.

Although I don't personally have any recollection of the events that happened in these photos I'm sure they mean a tremendous amount to my parents and possibly my brothers (if they can remember any of it!)

I put a sepia tone through the black and white version of the shot that I took to add to the age of the image. I was going to process it further but I think the content of the photos show the age!

43 - On the Shelf

I thought about heading to a supermarket and taking picture of cereal boxes or something equally mundane, but then as luck would have it I've reserved a shelf on my bookcase for the books that I've read in 2011 (I've had to start a second shelf and it's ruined my system!).

So here is a brief glimpse of some of the titles that I've read...the shallow depth of field makes the rest quite hard to read but you get the idea I'm sure!
