UK - Scotland - Highlands - Stormy Evening at Loch Ness

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands (57°18′N 4°27′W) extending for approximately 37 km (23 mi) southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 15.8 m (52 ft) above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56.4 km2 (21.8 sq mi) after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume. Its deepest point is 230 m (755 ft), deeper than the height of London's BT Tower at 189 m (620 ft) and deeper than any other loch except Loch Morar. It contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, and is the largest body of water on the Great Glen Fault, which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.

Loch Ness might be the biggest body of water of UK, but it doesnt make it the most photogenic one. It is actually quite difficult to come up with a nice shot and ok foreground. For that very reason, I was happy to have found this place during such a wonderful evening stormy light... and I had had no luck with seeing the monster during any of my visits to this place...

John o'Groats is famed as the northeastern corner of the British Mainland and the small village receives a huge number of visitors. The true northeasterly point is nearby Duncansby Head, which has two truly spectacular sea-stacks just to the south. An excellent coastal walk. Duncansby Head is the real north eastern tip of the Scottish mainland, and probably exceeds John o' Groat's distance from Lands End by a good mile or two.

Neist Point is surely one of those iconic and equally impressive sights on Isle of Skye. The last time I was there I was not very lucky with the weather. This time around, I have checked the forecast and headed there in hope of stunning sunset. When I got there it was still rather sunny, but too early with wrong shadows on the rock. Soon after my arrival lots of clouds started to appear completely covering the sun for next 2 hours... while I was waiting on the cliff, and those 5-6C didnt really feel that warm... after those 2 hours of waiting (and playing around with various compositions) the sun had appeared for 5 mins, so I could take this simple composition but with wonderful warm evening light on the rock with some dramatic stormy sky. At least I got those 5 mins... I didnt get even that last time..

It is the 32nd-tallest, and thus shortest, member of the World Federation of Great Towers, and is the only bridge to be a member. It is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge to have one pylon and one cable-stayed plane. It is an asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge with a main span length of 303 metres. Its steel construction is suspended from steel cables, connected on the Petržalka side to two pillars. The total length of the bridge is 430.8 metres, its width 21 metres, and it weighs 7537 tonnes.

A special attraction is its flying saucer-shaped structure housing a restaurant, called "UFO" (since 2005; previously called Bystrica), on the bridge's 84.6 metre pylon. The restaurant is reached using an elevator situated in the left pillar, and offers a good view over Bratislava. In the right pillar there is an emergency staircase with 430 stairs.
This might be one more twilight photo of another capital city, however I'm very pleased with it. Main reason for being so is the fact that it is not a view of Bratislava you will normally see. It has two Bratislava icons - the Castle and the St. Martin Church shot from lovely bar/club terrace in the old town. I was walking around the city wondering about angles and views and I have noticed top floor terrace on one of the buildings. Although it was way after blue hour, I still went up there where I found this wonderful view. I asked if I could come the next day and take some photos. It was ok to do so... some similar places in different cities actually charge quite a lot of money of photos taken on tripod from their unique view point, luckily not this one.

Where better to sample Christmas atmosphere than in the fairy tale like UNESCO town Cesky Krumlov. I have to admit that the first time, I visited this place, was thanks to a foreigner !!! I had no idea what jewel it is till I saw it for the first time, well that was several years back and I'm always happy to return to this more than amazing wonder. If that can be combined with Christmas atmosphere and rather significant drop in tourist volumes which are always extremely high, you cannot go wrong.... and I should not forget to mention that this shot was taken from my room window... yet again, it is all about the location, location, location... and there is nothing wrong seeing the castle from the comfort of your bed - literally.

Český Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, best known for the fine architecture and art of the historic old town and Český Krumlov Castle. Old Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.

České Budějovice (also known as Budweis in German or English) is in South Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. This South Bohemian metropolis was founded in 1265 by the Czech King Premysl Otakar II on the confluence of the Vltava and Malse Rivers. The Square of Premysl Otakar II with its dimensions 133x137 m is one of the largest squares in Bohemia, with arcades and a range of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque burgher's houses. The other important town monuments include the originally renaissance Town Hall, the Samson's fountain and 72 m high the Black Tower which provides a beautiful view of the town and surroundings.

The heart of České Budějovice's old town is the main square, named after the founder of the city King Přemsyl Otakar II. The two, three and four storey townhouses that face the square have colourfully decorated facades and most have a covered walkway at ground level, providing a convenient space for shoppers to shelter from the weather and for cafes to set up outdoor seating.

The central point of the square is marked by a huge stone fountain featuring a sculpture of Samson and his lion. The fountain is the tallest in the country and dates from around the same time as the baroque reconstruction of the town hall. It's also ringed by wooden benches and is the usual meeting place for people in the city. At night the fountain is illuminated, as are the town hall and many of the two and three storey townhouses facing the square.
UK - England - London - Tower Bridge and the Dolphin Fountain at Dusk - Twilight - Blue Hour

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Tower Bridge (built 1886-1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. It has become an iconic symbol of London.

The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a chocolate brown colour. Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream.

As for this shot, it actually took me 3 separate times to get this shot and considering the fact that I dont live in London anymore, it were 3 separate visits to London itself. Fist time I got to this place to photograph it was in winter and the fountain was closed for winter and there was no water in it. Second time was a weekend visit to London and I planned to come here just before the sunset, however as it is very usual inLondon, the London tube that goes there was closed for maintenance over the weekend and I didnt have enough time to get there with other means of transport... so when I finally got there this particular occasion, I appreciated the place and shot much, much more...

UNESCO town Cesky Krumlov is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to.

Český Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, best known for the fine architecture and art of the historic old town and Český Krumlov Castle. Old Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.
UK - England - London - National Gallery at Trafalgar Square at Dusk - Twilight - Blue Hour

Trafalgar Square is a public space and tourist attraction in central London, England, United Kingdom. At its centre is Nelson's Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. There are a number of statues and sculptures in the square, with one plinth displaying changing pieces of contemporary art. When the square was laid out in the 1840s, the fountains' primary purpose was not aesthetic, but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly. They were originally fed by water pumped from an artesian well by a steam engine sited behind the National Gallery

I realize that this is rather classic take on London, but one that everyone should have.....

Beautiful and truly unique, Brighton Bandstand is located on Brighton's vibrant seafront. It was restored to its original specification and reopened in 2009. The ornate architecture is magnificently detailed.

Designed by Phillip Lockwood, Brighton Borough Surveyor, and completed in 1884 the Bandstand is considered to be one of the finest examples of a Victorian bandstand still surviving in England today. The original design featured a bridge linking the upper promenade with the Bandstand which was removed in the late 1970s. The ground floor was used as public conveniences until 2003 when vandalism forced their closure.

Dyrhólaey (Door Island) is a 120 m high rock, created during a submarine volcanic eruption approximately 80 thousand years ago. The eruption, which formed Dyrhólaey and the pillars around it (originally parts of it), presumably took place in the same way as other submarine and subglacial eruptions. In the beginning, a major tephra eruption took place and later, when the crater reached the surface of the sea, the lava started to flow and thus ensured its existence. Dyrhólaey is a promontory reaching out into the ocean on the south coast of Iceland. It is the southernmost part of the country.

I knew that there will be Full Moon during my trip to Iceland, however I was not sure how I'll use it in my work. Thanks to my beloved TPE app on my iphone, I realized that Dyrhólaey might be perfect place to capture it... and the Moon could not have been placed any better, especially as this is the only place you can capture this rock from (just few steps to left or right).

The Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence located in Brighton, England. It was built in three campaigns, beginning in 1787, as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, from 1811 Prince Regent. It is often referred to as the Brighton Pavilion. It is built in the Indo-Saracenic style prevalent in India for most of the 19th century, with the most extravagant chinoiserie interiors ever executed in the British Isles.

If you thought that you are clicking on a shot from India, you were very wrong, but on the other hand, not so wrong as it really looks like a capture of one of those beautiful Indian palaces. The reflection is captured at very small man made pond in front. I was holding my camera just above the water to get most of the reflection.

just a small note... I really hope that 5D III will come up with one of those displays that you can adjust for situations like these when you take a photo and just hope it will come up ok..
Iceland - Reynisdrangar - Rock Formation on the Beach at Sunset

Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland. According to legend the Reynisdrangar needles were formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship to land. When daylight broke they turned to stone. The Needles can be seen clearly from the village of Vík and are 66 meters above sea level at their highest. In one of the many caves here – there is a local legend about a monster having lived here for many centuries. The monster seems to have disappeared after a landslide over 100 years ago…

Story behind this photo - we went to capture this place before sunrise and took few shots before the rain started. My friends "ran" to the car and wanted to leave, I, on contrary, took my umbrella and kept shooting, hoping that the weather will get better soon again, and it did !! My friends got out of car after realizing that I wont be leaving at all... the morning had just got better and better and this shot is wonderful example that you should never give up !!

Vik i Myrdal is a charming small village on the southernmost region of Iceland. Fenced in with the Atlantic ocean to the south and a big ice cap to the north as well as the rivers Jokulsa to the west and the river Blautakvisl to the east. The area is quite spectacular with the black sand and the hard ocean waves beating the shore of Reynisfjara. Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland. This photo had nearly never happened as the night was so windy that both small houses we were staying in were shaking heavily from the strong wind. I woke up much earlier in the night thinking, that there is no point of going to the beach as I'll be blown away together with my gear... However curiousity and very strong will got the better of me and I headed to the beach, to find myself in the best shooting conditions with wonderful warm light... .
Sweden - Sverige - Stockholm - Gilded Crown of Skeppsholmen Bridge

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Skeppsholmsbron - The Skeppsholm Bridge - is in central Stockholm, Sweden, connecting Blasieholmen to Skeppsholmen. The bridge, 165 metres long and 9.5 metres wide, consists of a 5.5 metre wide roadway flanked by 2 metre pathways, and is divided into 5 compartments. It was the first forging iron bridge to be constructed in Sweden, manufactured by Motala Verkstad in 1861. The first bridge to connect Skeppsholmen to the rest of the city was a wooden bridge on poles, simply called Holmbron ("The Islet Bridge") and provided with a drawbridge, constructed by the admiralty in 1638-1640 when the camp of the Swedish Navy was relocated from Blasieholmen to Skeppsholmen. In 1822 the bridge was damaged in a fire, and subsequently replaced by a temporary pontoon bridge. Funded directly and still owned by the state, the present steel bridge was finally inaugurated in 1861. In 1935 the bridge together with other building and structures on Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen were classified as historical landmarks, thus prohibiting replacing the bridge or altering its exterior, a decision nevertheless reassessed in the 1990s.

When you check photos of Stockholm you will surely find few with this crown bridge. Most people focus only on the crown itself, however I decided to include the walkway as well, it adds extra dimension to the shot.
