The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs by the English Channel. They form part of the South Downs in East Sussex, between the towns of Seaford and Eastbourne in southern England. They are within the Seven Sisters Country Park. They are the remnants of dry valleys in the chalk South Downs, which are gradually being eroded by the sea.
UK - Scotland - Highlands - Stormy Evening at Loch Ness

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands (57°18′N 4°27′W) extending for approximately 37 km (23 mi) southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 15.8 m (52 ft) above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56.4 km2 (21.8 sq mi) after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume. Its deepest point is 230 m (755 ft), deeper than the height of London's BT Tower at 189 m (620 ft) and deeper than any other loch except Loch Morar. It contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, and is the largest body of water on the Great Glen Fault, which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.

Loch Ness might be the biggest body of water of UK, but it doesnt make it the most photogenic one. It is actually quite difficult to come up with a nice shot and ok foreground. For that very reason, I was happy to have found this place during such a wonderful evening stormy light... and I had had no luck with seeing the monster during any of my visits to this place...

John o'Groats is famed as the northeastern corner of the British Mainland and the small village receives a huge number of visitors. The true northeasterly point is nearby Duncansby Head, which has two truly spectacular sea-stacks just to the south. An excellent coastal walk. Duncansby Head is the real north eastern tip of the Scottish mainland, and probably exceeds John o' Groat's distance from Lands End by a good mile or two.

Neist Point is surely one of those iconic and equally impressive sights on Isle of Skye. The last time I was there I was not very lucky with the weather. This time around, I have checked the forecast and headed there in hope of stunning sunset. When I got there it was still rather sunny, but too early with wrong shadows on the rock. Soon after my arrival lots of clouds started to appear completely covering the sun for next 2 hours... while I was waiting on the cliff, and those 5-6C didnt really feel that warm... after those 2 hours of waiting (and playing around with various compositions) the sun had appeared for 5 mins, so I could take this simple composition but with wonderful warm evening light on the rock with some dramatic stormy sky. At least I got those 5 mins... I didnt get even that last time..
UK - Scotland - Isle of Skye - Evening at Elgol during low tide

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

The little village of Elgol is one of the most photographed parts of the Isle of Skye. Elgol is an increasingly popular destination for climbers and hill walkers of all levels due to its unparalleled access to the famous Cuillin Hills and the various smaller hills dotted around wherever you look. Elgol is a crofting and fishing village in the Strath area of the Island. The small, sparsely populated village is scattered along the final mile of the road from Broadford.

Though you may never have heard of the little fishing and crofting village of Elgol in the Scottish Highlands, there is a good chance that you have seen photos of Elgol's famous mountain and seascape scenery in postcards, Scottish books and even film scenes and television programmes. From the larger Skye village of Broadford many visitors have turned down the enchanting Elgol road completely unaware of the magnificent scenes that await them around almost every corner. The 15 mile journey over twisty single-track roads will take you past High Pastures Cave, one of the most significant archaeological finds in the area, then sweep you around the corner to the ancient, historical site of Kilchrist church

Every mile you drive on your journey from Broadford to Elgol will fool you into thinking that the scenery simply cannot be bettered. However, you will be proved wrong when you arrive in Elgol and reach the shore and the little fishing harbour. There is simply nothing on earth to compare to the site of the Cuillin Hills beyond the Elgol shore - a breathtaking view whether it is sunny or stormy.

There are various opinions as to the meaning of the name, 'Elgol' (or Ealaghol in the native Gaelic, some suggesting 'The Noble Dale' and others 'The Weeping Swan' (folklore details the story of a Viking captain who perished when his longboat named 'The Swan' came to attack the people of Elgol).

Derwentwater (or Derwent Water) is one of the principal bodies of water in the Lake District National Park in North West England. It lies wholly within the Borough of Allerdale, in the county of Cumbria. The lake occupies part of Borrowdale and lies immediately south of the town of Keswick. It is both fed and drained by the River Derwent. It measures approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long by 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and is some 72 feet (22 m) deep. There are several islands within the lake, one of which is inhabited.

I think that probably every photographer that goes to Lake District comes home with at least one photo of a wooden jetty on the lake. This one in particular is rather popular. I have tried to make it little bit my own by using torch and lighting it up against dark and stormy sky.
UK - England - Cumbria - Lake District NP - Wooden jetty on the shore of Derwent Water near Keswick

UK - England - Cumbria - Lake District NP - Keswick - Castlerigg Stone Circle

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Castlerigg Stone Circle (Keswick Carles, Carles, Carsles or Castle-rig) near Keswick in England is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. Every year, thousands of people make the short journey from Keswick to the plateau of Castlerigg Fell and to Chestnut Hill, on which the monument stands. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra.

The stones are of a local metamorphic slate, set in a flattened circle, measuring 32.6 m (107 ft) at its widest and 29.5 m (97 ft) at its narrowest. The heaviest stone has been estimated to weigh around 16 tons and the tallest stone measures approximately 2.3m high. There is a 3.3m wide gap in its northern edge, which may have been an entrance. Within the circle, abutting its eastern quadrant, is a roughly rectangular setting of a further 10 stones. The circle was probably constructed around 3200 BC (Late Neolithic/Early Bronze-Age), making it one of the earliest stone circles in Britain and possibly in Europe

It is not so easy to come up with unique take on a place like Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the most visited places in Lake District. I was rather lucky as it was raining quite heavily (not that luckily), however the result was that there was rather large water whole inside of the stone circle and I have used it in my favor and capture this place with reflection. This angle was the lowest possible as I was holding the camera just above the water level.

Camera Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II; Lens: 17.00 - 40.00 mm; Focal length: 38.00 mm; Aperture: 7.1; Exposure time: 1/160 s; ISO: 100

This shot could be just one more lovely sunrise/sunset photo in my long series of such shots, however there is something special about it - the time - taken at 1AM ! I have already experienced those long days during summer months in Iceland, however there the sun actually sets for few hours (creating several hours long "blue hour"). The Norskehavet Bay is even more to the North (way above the arctic circle), the sun never sets there from end of May to end of July. This shot was taken during my first night of the day that never ended.

Experiencing never ending days is one thing but finding the right composition like this is another. I have spend some time searching on Google Earth to see where I could possibly find interesting location which is facing North. Although when you find a good location it doesnt guarantee that there will be interesting foreground. You really have to use the imagination and creativity. This shot is such an example. I didnt adjust the rope here, it is as it was found.
Finland - Lapland - Midnight Sun at Inari Lake - "Sunrise at 1AM"

This shot could be just one more lovely sunrise/sunset photo in my long series of such shots, however there is something special about it - the time - taken at 1AM ! I have already experienced those long days during summer months in Iceland, however there the sun actually sets for few hours (creating several hours long "blue hour"). The Inari lake is even more to the North (way above the arctic circle), the sun never sets there from end of May to end of July. This shot was taken during my first night of the day that never ended. Finding a good location to capture it, was not so straight forward as I was hoping, but I was lucky to find this wooden walkway that was pointing directly to the North ! It is difficult to say when the sunset stops and the sunrise starts, but I guess the midnight is the breaking point. the sky like this can last for several hours... well meaning that you have similar conditions.. Yet again luck was on my side as there was quite heavy storm and lot of rain behind me but I still managed to take photos for about an hour and then I had to be holding the umbrella above the camera again.. !!!
Czech Republic - Prague Surrounding - Sunset over Field of Yellow Mustard Flowers and a Small Chapel

Czech Republic is not only about historical cities but also about its beautiful landscape which is enhanced by many flowers in full bloom in spring and if you are lucky you can witness such a dramatic sky as well. Not my first or last yellow field photo, but this time I found wonderful small chapel, nicely positioned close to sunset...

After I got lot of nice feedback on similar photo I posted yesterday on FB, I decided to post this version as well. I came back to the same place, now with lot of time and luckily very similar (maybe even better) sky. Unfortunately it was so windy that I could not have used long exposure anymore as the flowers would be completely blurred from movement. I have therefore gave more focus to that amazing sky ! Even when you have a chance to come to the same place, and have similar conditions... you might not end up with the result you had in mind :-)
Georgia - Black Sea - Moment of Zen on Batumi Beach during Sunset

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Batumi (Georgian: ბათუმი) is a seaside city on the Black Sea coast and capital of Adjara, an autonomous republic in southwest Georgia. Batumi, with its large port and commercial center, is also the last stop of the Transcaucasian Railway and the Baku oil pipeline. It is situated some 20 km (12 mi) from the Turkish border, in a subtropical zone, rich in agricultural produce such as citrus fruit and tea. The city's climate is heavily influenced by the onshore flow from the Black Sea and is subject to the orographic effect of the nearby hills and mountains, resulting in significant rainfall throughout most of the year, making Batumi the wettest city in both Georgia and the entire Caucasus Region.

I wanted to capture pebbles like this for some time. As the Batumi beach doesnt have any other interesting features I thought I help it a little and I started to build these "Zen towers", combining it with setting sun has created really lovely photo that I'm happy with. I was really playing around with this shot.. (laying fully on the beach - cold beach) I have tried long exposure and then captured it through live view... this is the result of the live view setting on 5D II which I dont know how to control. The light was changing quickly or rather the sun was moving quickly so I didnt want to waste time with constantly changing the setting. After all 5D II can handle the ISO noise very well up to 3200 - and at the end I prefer this version to the long exposure.

Singapore has a lot to offer and a visit to Botanical Gardens should not be missed, especially when you go early morning when the heat is still bearable and there are less people around.

As for this photo - I decided not to carry a tripod to Botanical Gardens during the day, although I knew that there are few waterfalls (photo research again), I decided that I might use only my photographic bag as a support for few sec exposure.. it worked but it was from rather low angle. Luckily a small photographer group came over with their tripods, I had asked one of the girls if I can borrow it for a minute or two so I could take this shot from higher perspective as well. So besides the creativity, vision, technical skills, assertiveness is also an important ability photographer has to have :-)

Lake Sevan - Սևանա լիճ - Sevana Lich is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. Lake Sevan is situated in the central part of the Republic of Armenia, inside the Gegharkunik Province, at the altitude of 1,900m above sea level. The total surface area of its basin is about 5,000 km2, the lake itself is 940 km2, and the volume is 34.0 bln cubic meters. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. Only 10% of the outgoing water is drained by the Hrazdan (Razdan) river, while the remaining 90% evaporates. Along with Lake Van and Lake Urmia, Sevan was considered one of the three great lakes of the historical Armenian Kingdom, collectively referred to as the Seas of Armenia; it is the only one within the boundaries of today's Republic of Armenia. The Sevanavank peninsula (formerly an island) is the historic area of the lake at its northern shores.

Yet another shot when the perseverance paid off. This shot was taken during rather rainy days, so not the best conditions to get up early in the morning into unknown, when the warm bed seemed as so much better option. At the end it was very lovely morning and the sun showed up for little while to present us with some wonderful colors. As for this shot - unless you know this area really well, you would not notice that there is also one of the most visited Armenian churches on the shot - Sevanavank monastery. It is a small dot on the hill. You can guess that it is not the shot of Sevanavank monastery itself, but to give you an idea of surrounding landscape.
Indonesia - Java Island - Inside Large Caldera under Volcanic Ash Cloud in Bromo

© Lucie Debelkova / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo:

Here is the last of my 3 posts from this most amazing photoshoot of my life - capturing landscape inside large caldera under Volcanic Ash Cloud in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park - Active Mount Bromo (2,329 m) - Volcano with the entire top been blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white sulphurous smoke. It sits inside the massive Tengger caldera (diameter approximately 10 km), surrounded by the Laut Pasir (Sea of Sand) of fine volcanic sand .

Capturing active volcano was always top of my photographic dream/agenda. After seeing (and walking on) Mt. Bromo 11 years ago, it was must stop on my last trip to Indonesia. What I didnt know was that Bromo has become extremely active and nobody could tell me if it is possible to visit it or not. Through out the trip I found out that it is possible to go to the view point as the volcano itself sits in larger ancient caldera (crater). When I finally got there I was unlucky as there was extremely strong fog that didnt allow to see anything, you could just hear those incredible sounds and feel the ground shaking - very scary and very humbling feeling. When the fog finally opened up the 3rd day I could witness this sight... something I'll always treasure as very unique experience.

The 3rd day was not only the time I could properly capture the volcano, but I also made it down into the large ancient crater/caldera. The experience of driving beneath the large volcanic cloud of ash was incredibly scary, the closer to the source of ash cloud we got, more incredible the experience was. Luckily enough I was there with another photographers crazy enough to enjoy this madness instead of trying to escape as quickly as possible. I have purposely included the car into the shot to give it a scale, although I still think it doesnt give it full justice.
