Romania-1822 - Flickr Birthday - 5 Years

archer10 (Dennis) posted a photo:

PLEASE, no multi invitations or self promotion in your comments, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks - NONE OF MY PICTURES ARE HDR.

I have now been on Flickr for 5 years, doesn't seem that long. As long as I take pictures I will be on Flickr even though I sometimes wonder why. Thanks for viewing my work over the years, much appreciated.

These seem like great reasons to be on Flickr, at least for me:

1. I see all your great shots, some are really amazing;
2. I get to share my trips with all of you;
3. I have met so many great people from around the world on Flickr;
4. Gives me a reason to go and take more shots so I can share them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My pictures have bee published or used by other people well over 900 times (lost count), thanks to being seen on Flickr and the Creative Commons License.
Tunisia-4798 - Closing the Door on Tunisia
This was a door in the museum and I thought it was a fitting end to this 9 day trip, my flight was leaving at midnight. I hope you have enjoyed seeing what I did and maybe learned some new things about Tunisia.

I highly recommend a trip to Tunisia, great people, culture and things to see.

Remember no matter were you travel be careful of what you eat and drink. I was criticized for not trying much of the food, I am very cautious. The last night a doctor was called to the hotel, 4 or 5 people were sick (the food), good to say they all recovered. They were all experienced travellers who now might realize that caution is always required no matter where you go. I pay to much for a trip to take a chance and get sick. I have seen to many people who think they can eat anything and that it is part of the travel experience, but sometimes they miss days of the tour because of it.

Somethings I do not eat or drink, even when I leave home (my city) and stay in Canada:

1. cold cuts (maybe old and rinsed in water)
2. cheeses (not sure of age and how it was handled)
3. salads (watched in water - many good places use sterile water, I don't take a chance)
4. street food
5. ice cubes (water - maybe tap water)
6. tap water
7. tea or coffee (at altitude like Tibet, Bolivia etc. water has to be boiled 20 minutes to kill things so I don't get use to having it anytime)
8. do not brush teeth with tap water
9. No coke etc. from a tap (mixed with water)

I do eat and drink:

1. bottled water
2. brush teeth with bottled water
3. drink bottled coke etc.
4. only well cooked food
5. junk food in packages
6. wine, beer, if I have hard liquor (very seldom) NO ice cubes

The Ali Pacha Palace as seen from inside the Bardo Museum.

The fortified military city of Bardo which is the centre of the Husseini power since 1705, witnessed the edification of sumptuous buildings within its walls.

Ali Pacha, the second sovereign of the dynasty between 1735 and 1756, built a first palace with a monumental entrance staircase guarded by lion statues.

Between 1824 and 1835, Hussein Bey built the "Small Tunisian Palace" characterized by Moorish Andalousian style.

Between 1859 and 1864, Mhammed Bey built the harem called “Qasr Al-Badii” which was characterized by an Italianist style.

These latter two residences, which are close to each other, remained the Bey’s residences until 1879. Sadok Bey, who was responsible for the bankruptcy of the kingdom, was obliged to restrain his lifestyle and move to Ksar Said where he had a much more modest residence.

The mosaic of the Most Holy Sepulcher and the memorial of Golgotha in Jerusalem.

At the forefront, the dome of Golgotha, erected at the site of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, whence flow the four rivers of Paradise: the Geon = Gihon, the Fison = Pishon, the Tigris and Euphrates, referring to the Word (the four gospels) and from which sheep, figurating the faithful, are drinking. In the backdrop, the Holy Sepulcher with its door ajar, is surrounded by two buildings, symbolizing Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

Source: threshold of the martyrdom erected in honour of Jesus Christ at the church of lunch - Younga (region of Mahres-Tunisia); early 6th century AD.

Mosaic of Dionysus with a gecko on a leash, El Jem, 4th century AD.

Dionysus was the god of wine, agriculture and fertility of nature, but on the other hand he also represents the mystery in religions. Scholars believe that this god came about later in pre-history, unlike other gods.

Oceanus Mosaic

This 3rd century mosaic depicts the mighty Oceanus who is considered the oldest among the Titans. The Titans, the elder gods, ruled the earth before the Olympians overthrew them. Oceanus refers to the ocean, which the Romans saw as a river circling the world. In this mosaic, Oceanus appears as a sea-god or the sea personified, with crab-claw horns emerging from his head.

Oceanus is also the central figure in the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy.

Some of the Sarcophagi at the museum, many are very elaborate. A guide took me back to see these in a closed off section of the museum.
