Highfield Children's Home

theirhistory posted a photo:

In the Harpenden Children's Home, under adult supervision (Tommy Johnson, Noel Brown) are allowed to swop their bows and arrows for a cricket ball and a scooter with Harry Singleton from Flat 1 (Sister Pearl's flat).
At the time, Tommy & Noel would have been some of the few coloured children in the Harpenden Home, thus the reason for these overseas visitors meeting these two children, it made the two boys feel they had something in common with others.
In the Home we were all equal, it mattered little to us whatever shade of skin colour we were, outside the Home in a village where there were no other people who were of non white colour, a few from the Home could be singled out in those days. At school we often kept together, any form of bullying could soon be sorted out by an older boy from the Home if it was one of the younger member of the Home involved.
Adults outside the Home tried to treat all of us equally, but the odd phrase could single a few of us out, in one of my file documents: "and is only lightly coloured", did it really have to be stated?
However in the Home everyone was equal.

At this age, I think Father Christmas is a very nice person. After the photo my mother told me I should have put my hood up.

He has not found about my naughty things for this year yet: Spreading a large tub of hair cream over things, painting my wellingtons blue, breaking things in a shop, making a fuss, etc
