American Toad

There were tons of frogs and toads along this trail. As we walked, we could hear them plopping into the water 10 or 15 feet in front of us. This American Toad (Bufo americanus) hung around long enough for me to take a photo of him.

Grass along the trail

I'm not sure what kind of grass or plant this is. If anyone knows, please speak up.

When I shot a few images and looked at the on the LCD display, I was disappointed. However I think it ended up looking OK.

Female Eastern Pondhawk Dragonfly

I find it difficult to pass by a beautiful female Eastern Pondhawk (Erythemis simplicicollis) without taking her picture. My photostream is proof of that.

Turkey Vulture

This isn't my photo. My wife, Charlene, took this one. As we were driving from one section of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge to another, we saw this Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) sitting atop a fencepost beside the road. Figuring we didn't have much time to get a shot before it would fly off, I told her to go for it, since she was holding the camera and the bird was on her side of the car. Char got this one shot and it took flight. I swear the Turkey Vulture should be Maryland's state bird -- they are all over the place.

Buckeye Butterfly

This was the only Buckeye (Junonia coenia) I saw this year, and it was pretty well beat up. It must have got in some tangles with the birds.

Eastern Painted Turtle

Male Chickweed Geometer Moth

While out of the car shooting wildflowers, I happened to notice this tiny Chickweed Geometer moth (Haematopis grataria) only because is was momentarily in flight. If you click the "All sizes" icon above this photo to enlarge it, you'll see that his antennae are "feathery." This is what determines that it's a male. A geometer moth is one of thousands of moths in the family that comes from inchworm caterpillars. The name "geometer" ultimately derives from the term "earth measurer," which is, in effect, how the inchworm got its name -- appearing to measure the earth as it moves.

Pickerel Frog

This cute little Pickerel Frog (Rana palustris) is one of the ones that were jumping like crazy all around us. Luckily, this stayed still long enough for me to snap a few shots. I found his markings to be very striking. He was only about three inches long.

Eastern Tailed-Blue Butterfly

The Eastern Tailed-Blue (Everes comyntas) flies through the end of October, or maybe a little longer in Maryland. If you view this large one of the tails is visible. This is the only tailed "blue" butterfly in the Eastern United States, which helps with identification. Also, the orange spots near the base of the hindwings are distinctive.

A type of holly?

This very small plant looks to me like a type of holly. It only rose a few inches off the ground and was in a forested area of the trail. Any ideas on what it is?

Partridgeberry

02/16/10 Update -- Per comment from "Drosera-x" this plant has been identified as Partridgeberry (mitchella repens).

I believe this plant is Teaberry (Gaultheria procumbens). I remember as a child having Teaberry plants all around in the woods near my house and picking the berries and eating them. I loved them. My Audubon Guide states that the berries will persist through the winter, and the leaves appear to be from the plant, too. Unless anyone knows otherwise, it's Teaberry then.

Blackwater River

You can certainly see how this river got its name. The tannins in the water really make it dark.
