Here I completed the carving. I added a couple coats of white acrylic paint, and a bit of pink over the nose...just like our Snoopy (seen below).

Here I have started shaving down the muzzle. Even thought the Safari store bought dog figure is labeled a "Jack Russel" it is way more bulky...like a much larger dog. The muzzle was wrong, and so was the mouth...too fleshy.

I could have done a better finish on Snoopy, but at this point I just wanted to get him done. It doesn't bother me that he looks carved .

I repainted the figure with at least 2 coats of white acrylic paint. after that, I added the flesh pink for the nose, inner thighs and belly area...just like our dog Snoopy has.

Next will come the faint brownish spots of the face and ear regions.

I wanted a tiny version of our Jack Russell...who is mostly white with few spots. I found this small plastic Safari Ltd figure at Micheal's Craft store, and took upon the task of changing it into the beloved image of our Snoopy (photo below).

The Safari figure had weird feet, the wrong tail, and the muzzle was not thin. Also, the body shape was all wrong, and our dog is barrel chested. I wanted to capture the very spirit and essence of OUR dog.

First of all, what is with those feet that Safari put on the figure---they just were unatural! the feet were first in getting cut and shaped. I used a new blade in a standard x-acto knife.

The dog on the right is the original untouched (still with the price tag on it).

The one of the left is the carved and repainted version made to look like our family dog, Snoopy the Jack Russell Terrier (see below).

Snoopy is 9 years old or older...a shelter rescue. Everyone thinks he is a puppy, and he still acts like one too.

Ok, not a great shot, but you try to take a photo with one hand, while the other is holding on to a feisty Jack Russel lunging on his leash to get at a Doe. She wasn't budging either...her 4 month old fawn was nearby.

All I wanted to do was get back to the car and go back home after our walk LOL.

Here is the finished "Snoopy" with the original Safari figure--the same kind I carved our family pet from. I also added the slight brown spots to Snoopy's face and ears with acrylic paint, and graphite from a pencil. See how the muzzle, feet, tail, and torso are greatly changed\ by the carving.

I could have done a better finish on Snoopy, but at this point I just wanted to get him done. It doesn't bother me that he looks carved .

You can see how I slowly shaved off tiny bits of plastic. It could have made for a bad cut if I did not CAREFULLY cut tiny slivers off...not big chunks. The plastic cut easily and I was fully focused on this. One wrong slip, and it could be the emergency room.

I took breaks, got up and walked away. It is crucial to be alert, and also, not to mess up the carving...plastic could not be glued back together (just like my fingers).

Oh, by the way, the xacto blade is in a Fiskars brand rubber knife holder. WAY more comfy then the standard metal Xacto holder.

We love walking the deer paths...Snoopy and I. Sometimes, we could not find our way out of a tangled overgrown wild woods if not for the blessed deer paths. Along these edge clearings, one can see not only occassionally see deer, but hawks, owls, fox, coyotes, oppossums, and raccoons. What a wonderful silent escape from city and suburbia.

This one is at Big Bend Lake in Des Plaines, IL. only a few miles from Chicago city limits.
