Vancouver's West End looking all tiny in the perspective distorting clarity of infra red light.

Distance haze in real life and photography is due to water in the atmosphere. Our brain tell us that the more something is caught in haze the farther away it must be. Totally smart.

Water reflects blue light which is why our oceans, as seen from space, are blue. This law of physics is also why every photo salesman worth her salt will suggest a UV (blue light) filter for your new spiffy lens. It will add clarity to the shots taken with your new lens.

Here's the cool bit. In being a short wavelength blue light quickly scatters off other water molecules and creates haze. Haze = blue.

By design an Infra Red (IR) camera is indifferent to blue light and is thus, automagically, equally indifferent to the haze water creates.

Take the haze out of the equation and our brain concludes that those distant objects must be up close and personal.

Tiny mountains.

Shooting in infra red is like have super hero vision.

On June 13 1886 what was then Vancouver quickly burned to the ground thanks to an out of control land clearing brush fire that quickly ... well ... got even more out of control. History labelled the conflagration "The Great Vancouver Fire" and it proved to be a moment that, fortunately, has not been repeated.

127 years later a meandering walk through Stanley Park's rhododendron garden, even in black and white, proves that the city has recovered quite well thank very much.

As the thin light of a mid fall sunrise spills over the West End of Vancouver a large bank of bay fog, more an overnight visitor to be honest, begins its retreat. As the mist slinks into English Bay you can hear it grumble "I'll be bach.".

Treating this as a challenge you decide to listen to a random shuffle play of all six of The Brandenburg Concertos by J.S. Bach. 18 movements in all. Very renegade.
