It's Not Quite Springtime in the Mountains

This shot is pretty mediocre as far as sunrises go, but I wanted to share something from our morning in the park last weekend. Shenandoah N.P. is open year round, but lodging, dining and other amenities are closed from November through April. The Skyland area opened back up for the season last weekend - so we drove up to the park at sunrise and had breakfast at the lodge. It's kind of an annual tradition to have breakfast at the lodge each year on opening weekend.

As we drove through the park, we saw over 200 deer, a few redtail hawks, and a several turkeys. One of the turkeys was laying her eggs about two feet away from the road. We reported her to rangers, so they could hopefully move her someplace safer.

Other than that, we didn't see anything terribly interesting. The trees are still bare, the sky was cloudless and the wind was whipping up to 50mph, so it really wasn't a good day for photos.

It will still be another month or so before the park really "wakes up". I'm really looking forward to it, too. I love spring in SNP - probably even moreso than fall.

This is my sixth image for 52 Weeks for Dogs. This was shot on a red backdrop with a single strobe bounced out of a white umbrella - totally basic stuff. The hearts and vignetted edges were added in post processing.

Bath Day for Mojo

I've been made aware that my photostream has been "Wookie-heavy" of late. Today, I have a photo of Mojo getting his (much needed) bath.

Mojo hates the water and lathering. But, he loves to be toweled dry -- and he really loves to run crazy laps around the house post-bath.

This is the view from 33 as you cross North Mountain. This spot is still about an hour out from our cabin. The cabin has a lot more snow than this.

I was going to go out and do some early morning waterfall shooting this morning, but it was -12 when I got up. I like cold weather and snow, but even I have my limits! We decided to stay inside by the fire and watch movies. It's supposed to be warmer (in the teens) and cloudier later this afternoon, so hopefully I'll be able to get out and do some shooting. The roads here are all snow covered, so I might not be able to go some places I had planned. We'll see...

I was looking for an extension cord for the Christmas tree, and came across this pair of Hot Wheels sunglasses (who knows why we have a pair of kid's sunglasses). Of course, I had to put them on one of the pugs.

Rose River Loop Hike - Shenandoah National Park

Yesterday, Adam and I got up early and headed to SNP to hike the Rose River Loop trail. It's our Thanksgiving tradition to go for a morning hike before digging into our gigantic Thanksgiving feast.

The Rose River and Hog Camp Branch are still suffering from unusually low water levels. It was also really sunny, so instead of shooting waterfall and stream scenes, I focused mostly on ice formations and small isolated runs of water. We've had a colder than average November, and a lot of the trail was covered with ice, frost and snow. We didn't see a single person out on the trail, but we saw a bunch of deer, a big hawk and a yearling bear.

This is my post for 52 Weeks for Dogs. Wookie was completely unimpressed by the sunset. Once again, I'm getting this week's group post in at the eleventh hour. I've been so busy, that I just haven't been finding the time for Flickr.

The plan for this photo was to shoot Wookie in silhouette on one of the park walls with the setting sun behind him. However, clouds moved in earlier than expected and we ended up with a swirly, muted sunset. So, I changed my plan and shot Wookie with a flash so I could have light on him and keep the color in the sky.

This was shot at "The Point" overlook in Shenandoah National Park. It's a nice sunset spot that you can drive right up to.

It's been dreary and drizzly all day, but I still went out and did a little bit of shooting this morning. All the daffodils in the arboretum were bent under the weight of the rain drops.

We got about four inches of snow and a free day off work today! I'm always happy when snow falls after things have started to bloom -- it makes for pretty pictures.

This is a shot I sort of liked, but never posted, from my trip out west last summer. I went to Ruby Beach with the hope of shooting a spectacular sunset. It never really materialized and I got thick, soupy clouds instead. On the walk back to the car, I did see some nice reflections in the tidal stream.

Now that I'm in a photo drought, stuff from my archive is looking suddenly more appealing!

On Friday night, I saw a few minutes of the D.C. metro area news. Their local weatherman said "Fall color is at absolute peak along Skyline Drive. So, if you can find the time, Saturday will be a great day to drive down through the Shenandoah Valley and see the foliage." At that point, I made a decision to go hiking in the National Forest instead of SNP.

Adam and I chose to hike along the Mill Mountain Trail to Big Schloss. It's one of the best panoramic views in the entire Shenandoah Valley. The view you're seeing here is looking into West Virginia. It was so colorful! I wish we'd gotten an earlier start on the hike. By the time we got to the top, it was 11:30 and not the best time for photos. But, I think you get the idea about how beautiful it was up there. On our way back down the mountain, the clouds rolled in quickly and the rest of Saturday ended up being mostly overcast.
