London is not characterised by any particular architectural style, having accumulated its buildings over a long period of time. Few structures predate the Great Fire of 1666, notable exceptions including the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Banqueting House and several scattered Tudor survivors in the City of London.
In itself, the City contains a wide variety of styles, progressing through Wren's late 17th century churches and the financial institutions of the 18th and 19th century such as the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England, to the early 20th century Old Bailey (England and Wales' central criminal court) and the 1960s Barbican Estate. Notable recent buildings are the 1980s skyscraper Tower 42, the Lloyd's building with services running along the outside of the structure, and the 2004 Swiss Re building, known as the "Gherkin".
London's generally low-rise nature makes these skyscrapers and others such as One Canada Square and its neighbours at Canary Wharf and the BT Tower in Fitzrovia very noticeable from a distance. High-rise development is restricted at certain sites if it would obstruct protected views of St. Paul's Cathedral. Nevertheless, there are plans for more skyscrapers in central London (see Tall buildings in London), including the 72-story "Shard of Glass", which is now completed and is currently the tallest building in the European Union.

London 2012 Olympic Stadium

An Olympic Stadium with such a large removable element and mix of permanent and temporary seating has never been attempted before.

The Stadium is also the most sustainable ever built for an Olympic Games. The lower tier sits within a bowl in the ground, which minimises the use of construction materials. This bowl was created by excavating 800,000 tonnes of soil, the majority of which was cleaned and reused elsewhere on the Olympic Park.

Around 10,000 tonnes of steel were used to build the venue – significantly less than in other Olympic stadiums, making its construction more sustainable. The top ring of the Stadium was built using surplus gas pipes – a visual testament to London 2012's efforts to 'reduce, reuse and recycle'.
Construction began in May 2008 and was completed in just under three years, with the final piece of turf laid in March 2011.

www.london2012.com/paralympics/venue/olympic-stadium/

The Olympic Stadium in Olympic Park in Stratford, London, England was the centrepiece of the 2012 London Olympics, the last stop in the 2012 Olympics torch relay, and the venue of the athletic events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. It is the central venue of the 2012 London Paralympics. It is located at Marshgate Lane in London's Stratford district in the Lower Lea Valley. The stadium has a capacity of 80,000, making it the third-largest stadium in England behind Wembley Stadium and Twickenham Stadium. Land preparation for the stadium began in mid-2007, with the official construction start date on 22 May 2008, although piling works for the foundation unofficially began four weeks ahead of that date. The stadium will also host the 2017 World Championships in Athletics.

London 2012 Curtain of Light

Westminster Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day.
The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs.
The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint still at its heart.
A treasure house of paintings, stained glass, pavements, textiles and other artefacts, Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. Taken as a whole the tombs and memorials comprise the most significant single collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the United Kingdom.
The Library and Muniment Room houses the important (and growing) collections of archives, printed books and manuscripts belonging to the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, providing a centre for their study and for research into all aspects of the Abbey's long and varied history.
I wanted to get the light trails from the London red buses coming in both directions so I had to get very close to the road but it was worth it as the night sky was quite clear near the Big Ben and its fun to see the surprise faces of the people inside the bus.......
London 2012 Big Ben Lights

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and is generally extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower as well. The clock tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower.[3] It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower was completed in 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

London 2012 Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium will host the four spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies at London 2012, as well as some of the most iconic Games events.

The Stadium is at the heart of the Olympic Park on an ‘island’ site, surrounded by waterways on three sides. Spectators will reach the venue via five bridges that link the site to the surrounding area.

An Olympic Stadium with such a large removable element and mix of permanent and temporary seating has never been attempted before.
The Olympic Stadium in Olympic Park in Stratford, London, England is the centrepiece of the 2012 London Olympics and 2012 London Paralympics, the last stop in the 2012 Olympics torch relay, and the venue of the athletic events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

London 2012 Basketball Arena is one of London Olympic Stadium.

The venue’s frame is made up of 1,000 tonnes of steel and is covered in 20,000 square metres of a recyclable white PVC fabric that will form the canvas for spectacular lighting displays during the Games.

The venue is just as visually impressive from the inside, with its black and orange seats representing the colours of a basketball.
Initial works started on the Basketball Arena in October 2009, and construction was completed on time and within budget in June 2011 – making it one of the quickest Olympic Park venues to be constructed.

The arena’s giant frame was set up in less than three months during spring 2010.
Behind the scenes, the arena shares some facilities with the Velodrome and BMX Track to make most efficient use of space and resources. This includes two courts in temporary accommodation and areas for catering, security, waste management and the media.

London 2012 Velodrome is one of London Olympic Stadium.

The Velodrome’s design incorporates natural ventilation and lets in an abundance of natural light, reducing the amount of energy needed for artificial lighting. Its roof collects rainwater that will reduce mains water usage by more than 70 per cent.

The venue’s designers worked closely with a design panel, including Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, to tailor the track geometry, temperature and environmental conditions with the aim of creating a record-breaking track.
The Velodrome has capacity for 6,000 spectators, with the seating split into two tiers. A glass wall around the venue’s perimeter between the lower and upper tiers of the venue’s seating, giving spectators a 360-degree view of the Olympic Park.

Wherever possible, the materials used in the venue’s construction were sustainably sourced, including the 5,000 square metres of western red cedar used to clad its exterior. Both this and the Siberian pine for the Velodrome’s track were certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
In addition, the choice of a cable-net roof design (which is ‘strung’ with steel cables in the manner of a tennis racket) reduced the amount of material required and decreased construction time by 20 weeks.
Construction of the Velodrome started in March 2009 and was completed less than two years later in February 2011. It was the first sporting venue to be finished, 18 months ahead of the Games.
In April 2012 the Velodrome won an Architecture Award at an awards ceremony hosted by the Design Museum.

London 2012 Copper Box is one of London Olympic Stadium.

The venue was designed and built with sustainability as a priority. Among its many innovative features, the roof of the Copper Box is fitted with 88 light pipes that allow natural light into the venue, reducing the demand for electric lights. This will achieve annual energy savings of up to 40%.

Rainwater collected from the venue’s roof will be used to flush toilets and reduce water use at the venue by up to 40%.
The glazed concourse level that encircles the building will allow visitors after the Games to see the sport taking place inside and illuminating the venue when lit at night.

The top half of the venue is clad in 3,000 square metres of external copper cladding – mostly recycled – to give it a unique appearance that will develop a rich natural colour as it ages.
Construction began in July 2009 and it was the third competition venue on the Olympic Park to be completed in May 2011.
