The cliffs of Lake Superior in Michigan. What amazed me was the beautiful turquoise colour of the water - a colour that I expected to see only in tropical areas or in glacial lakes. It would have been helpful to have a tiny boat at the base of these cliffs to give the viewer a sense of scale, but I suppose those tall trees do that a little bit...
Inunnguaq

susanonline (busy these days) posted a photo:

Inunnguak means "immitation of a person", and it is the form of Inuit cairn most familiar to non-Inuit people, although commonly it is known as an inukshuk. (Inuit people prefer the spelling 'inuksuk')
The word inuksuk means "something which acts for or performs the function of a person". It can be a single rock placed on end, a cross, or a pillar of stones, whether flat ones or round. Basically it means, 'someone was here'.

It has become a symbol of Canada because it is also a symbol of the Winter Olympic games to be held in Vancouver in 2010. It is quite common to see these little figures along highways, particularly in northern Ontario, in gardens, and on beaches. I found this one on a beach in Prince Edward Island. And yes, in places the stone there really is quite an orange-red colour, as are many of the country roads.

In Jasper National Park, there is a tram that will take people to the top of Mount Whistler. Once you get off, you can walk the rest of the way to the summit. Surprisingly, there are flies, mosquitoes, and other insects up there, along with a variety of hardy flowers. I am not sure what these are called (a type of alpine poppy?) but they were quite lovely!

Somewhere in the world, this lady has a picture with me in it. It was a snap decision to take a picture of her, taking a picture of me; I really like the way she blends in so well. Her dress is the same colour as the rocks and her skin and hair pick up the colour of the ocean floor.

Red Cliffs at St. Martins

EXPLORE #359 Thank you!

The red cliffs of St. Martins, New Brunswick. The Seaside restaurant is within viewing distance. The cliffs really are this red while the sun is setting. We visited the same cliffs in the morning, and they looked quite ordinary; the sun was on the other side.

I love a square crop but this just seemed to work better this way. And to my surprise, when I checked the horizon, it was as good as level. I have the worst time getting level horizons... but I'm working at it.

This photo is dedicated to Patient Husband who encourages me in my creative endeavours, and who planned such a wonderful trip for my daughter and me.
