Kellie's Castle 28

razuryza posted a photo:

In the early 1890's, British entrepreneurs set up rubber estates in the vicinity of Batu Gajah. Among them were Kinta Kellas Estate, Kinta Valley Estate, Harewood Farm, Sengat Farm and others. Amongst the popular British entrepreneurs were William Kellie Smith and Alma Baker.

William Kellie Smith was from a village in north east Scotland known as Kellas. In 1890, at the age of 20, he arrived in the then undeveloped Malaya. While in Penang, he met an estate owner named Alma Baker, a contractor in Kinta. He later became the owner of Kinta Kellas Estate and the Kinta Kellas Tin Dredging Company.

At the peak of his fortune, Kellie Smith constructed a huge building for his family. The building, called Kellas House, was built in 1910. The three storey building shares similar architecture of a palace in India. He even employed a group of Indian labourers from Madras. The building had 14 rooms, a cellar and a secret tunnel which was also equipped with an elevator, the first in Malaya. On the second floor, he planned to build a tennis courtyard. News of the proposed building was published in the London Financier newspaper on 15 September 1911, describing the residence of the Kellas Estate owner as being the most unique structure in the far east, both in terms of shape as well as size.

At the end of World War One, a Spanish Flu epidemic spread from Europe through Asia, right to Malaya including the Kellas Estate. Many estate workers were fatally infected by the virus. The head of his workforce requested that they build a temple to seek protection for the people living on the estate. Smith, who speaks fluent Tamil and Malay, instructed all the workers that were working on his new Kellas House to build a new temple within the estate by the road side. A little statuette resembling the Estate Manager, dressed as a European with a white hat stands amongst the row of deities on the roof of the temple. This temple is still used by Hindu worshipperss till today.

Unfortunately, the Kellas House was never completed as Kellie Smith died while in Lisbon, Portugal on 11 December 1926 at the age of 56. Eventhough the Kellas House, or later known as Kellie's Castle looks like an unfinished building, the uniqeness of the mansion has now become a popular local tourist attraction in Batu Gajah.
Kellie's Castle 27

razuryza posted a photo:

Kellie's Castle 25

razuryza posted a photo:

Kellie's Castle 24
