Volvo Ocean Race

Boston 2009
Volvo Ocean Race
Boston Harbor

The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers - fearless men who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.

Their challenge back then was not a race as such, but recording the fastest time between ports. This meant new levels of pride for themselves and great recognition for their vessel.

The spirit that drove those commercial sailors along the web of trade routes, deep into the bleak latitudes of the Southern Ocean and around the world’s most dangerous capes, emerges today in the form of the Volvo Ocean Race, a contest now seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.

The first edition of this sporting adventure came in the wake of two remarkable sailors of the last century, Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, men who drew worldwide acclaim for amazing solo voyages around the planet. Inevitably their success led to talk in international sailing circles of a race around the world for fully crewed yachts. It became a reality in 1973 with The Whitbread round the World Race, the longest, most demanding and perilous sporting contest the world had known.

Dangerous it was. In that very first race three competing sailors were lost after being washed overboard during storms. This led to the inevitable call for that inaugural contest to be the last, but the desire for unbridled adventure and great competition led to the race being staged every four years.

The re-badged Volvo Ocean Race was run for the first time in 2001-02. Today it is, quite simply, the ‘Everest of Sailing’.

During the nine months of the 2008-09 Volvo, which starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2008 and concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009, the teams will sail over 37,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm.

Each of the seven entries has a sailing team of 11 professional crew, and the race requires their utmost skills, physical endurance and competitive spirit as they race day and night for more than 30 days at a time on some of the legs. They will each take on different jobs onboard the boat and on top of these sailing roles, there will be two sailors that have had medical training, as well as a sailmaker, an engineer and a media specialist.

During the race the crews will experience life at the extreme: no fresh food is taken onboard so they live off freeze dried fare, they will experience temperature variations from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius and will only take one change of clothes. They will trust their lives to the boat and the skipper and experience hunger and sleep deprivation.

The race is the ultimate mix of world class sporting competition and on the edge adventure, a unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance.

It is undeniably the world’s premier global race and one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world.

Boston 2009
Buckman Tavern
Lexington Battle Green
Lexington, MA

Buckman Tavern (circa 1704-1710)

Buckman Tavern, the oldest tavern in Lexington, is located on Lexington Common, across from the Lexington Battle Green, at 1 Bedford Street.

About 77 Minutemen gathered there in the early hours of April 19, 1775, while awaiting the British regulars. Definite word of the progress of the British troops reached the tavern just before sunrise. Responding to the beating of William Diamond's drum and the ringing of the alarm bell in the Belfry, Captain Parker's company of minutemen left the security of John Buckman's tavern to assemble in two long lines on the common. Following the arrival of the British, a single shot was fired: with this shot the American Revolution began.

The tavern was licensed to serve drovers in 1713, and served as a place for churchgoers during the Sunday nooning. The interior today is much the same as it was when the tavern was the headquarters of the Minutemen. Having been restored in the 1920's by the Lexington Historical Society, the original seven foot-wide taproom fireplace was rediscovered and the bar was reinstalled. Among the many items on display is the old front door, with its bullet hole made by a British musket ball during the Battle of Lexington, and a portrait of John Buckman, the proprietor of the tavern in 1775.

To the left of the tavern is the Memorial to the Lexington Minutemen of 1775, erected in 1949, and containing the names of the Minutemen who died on the Green in the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The inscription reads "these men gave everything dear in life Yea and Life itself in support of the common cause."

Harvard Square is a large triangular area in the center of Cambridge, MA, at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Brattle Street, and John F. Kennedy Street. Adjacent to the historic heart of Harvard University, Harvard Yard, the Square (as it is called locally) functions as a commercial center for Harvard students, as well as residents of western Cambridge and the inner western suburbs of Boston.

Various parts of the 1997 film Good Will Hunting were filmed in and around Harvard Square, most notably at the former Tasty Sandwich Shop and the outdoor seating area of the square's largest Au Bon Pain café.

Boston 2009
Statue of John Harvard
Harvard Yard
Cambridge, MA

Established in 1636, Harvard is the oldest and most famous of all American universities. Every year, thousands of tourists make the short trip from Boston to Cambridge to walk across Harvard Yard, rub the foot of the John Harvard statue for good luck, as the student tradition goes, and admire its most notable buildings.

The statue of John Harvard is on Harvard's campus. The inscription on the statue reads "John Harvard, founder, 1638". The statue, sculpted by Daniel Chester French, was cast in 1884, and currently stands in front of University Hall. The statue is depicted on a 1986 United States Postal Service 56 cent postage stamp, as part of the Great Americans series.

Despite its name, the statue does not depict the true likeness of John Harvard, as the sculptor had no accurate image to work from. The statue, known by Harvard tour guides as the statue of Three Lies, claims that it depicts John Harvard, Founder, 1638, but in reality Harvard was a contributor, not the founder; the institution was actually founded in 1636; and the statue is really a likeness of someone else. French used a student as a model.[

John Harvard (November 26, 1607 – September 14, 1638) was an English clergyman and the first benefactor of Harvard College. Harvard bequeathed £779 (half of his estate) and his library of around 400 volumes to the New College at nearby Cambridge, which had been founded on September 8, 1636, and to his friend, the first schoolmaster of this college, Nathaniel Eaton. Eaton's Records indicate that the building of the new college began immediately in 1638 with the assistance of the carpenter Thomas Meakins and/or his son, Thomas Meakins, Jr. of Charlestown. It was completely constructed of wood, with a stone foundation and cellar, had its own apple orchard, and was apparently equipped with live-in accommodations for some 30 students, as there were at least that many attendant within the first year.

The school renamed itself "Harvard College" on March 13, 1639, and Harvard was first referred to as a university rather than a college by the new Massachusetts constitution of 1780.

No records or illustrations remain of the earliest college, which burnt to the ground in 1764 along with all but one of Harvard's original 400 volume donation.
