The very reclusive, Agami Heron (also known as the Chestnut-bellied Heron) is a beautiful, medium-sized heron with a long neck and rapier like bill (~15 cm long). The male above (reddish face) showing chestnut colored upper neck with a white stripe bordered by black stripe and distinctive mat of shaggy, light grey feathers. The belly is also chestnut. The male above has characteristic breeding season ribbon-like light blue crest feathers and also broad, slaty blue plumes on the lower back. I saw three distict colonies each comprising around 150 nests (~2-3 m above water level) but intermingled with other species' (boat-billed herons, and great white egrets) nests. The birds were comfortable with me in a canoe at a distance of about 20 m from the edge of the colony.

A six day wait in a canopy hide pays off. Amazing "stare down" and incredible to note how his belly stripes and shoulder speckles blend with the palm foliage...and those talons could inflict some serious damage!!

Tiny, long-legged owl spotted in open grassland along the shoreline of northeastern Brazil. This bird was roosting in a burrow excavated by an armadillo!
