The Kings Mountain hike is relatively short but plenty grueling... 2500+ feet elevation gain in approximately 2.5 miles. Here Cheryl signs the summit register.

Watson Falls

Watson Falls is one of the many waterfalls that Cheryl and I visited over Memorial Day weekend. (See her vertical study.) At 272 feet, this is the third highest waterfall in the state of Oregon.

It is also virtually IMPOSSIBLE to get a decent photograph much closer than this downstream trail-side vantage point. I hopped the fence at the end of the trail and positioned my tripod to capture the entire length of the waterfall with my wide-angle lens. Despite frantically wiping the lens between each shot, I managed only to get my camera and body thoroughly soaked by the relentless spray. At least I tried...

Two weeks ago Cheryl and I visited the Tire Mountain trail near Oakridge, Oregon, a great place to see June wildflowers. Among other things, there was plenty of Harsh Paintbrush (Castilleja hispida) in bloom, including this one.

Last week Cheryl and I visited the Tire Mountain trail near Oakridge, Oregon, a great place to see June wildflowers. Further information can be found at oregonwildflowers.org/viewlocation.php?ID=55.

I was torn between two slightly different studies, so I decided to keep both of them. I like this one because I was down low with all the beautiful little Rosy Plectritis (Plectritis congesta).

Last week Cheryl and I visited the Tire Mountain trail near Oakridge, Oregon, a great place to see June wildflowers. Further information can be found at oregonwildflowers.org/viewlocation.php?ID=55.

I was torn between two slightly different studies, so I decided to keep both of them. I like this one because of the exposure of the trees and the better view of the hillside meadow in the mid-foreground.

Yakso Falls

Yakso Falls is a 60+ feet waterfall along the Little River east of Roseburg, Oregon. There was a lot of spray and this was somewhat tricky to frame due to trees, but the cloudy conditions were ideal to properly document this beautiful waterfall. (2.5 second exposure)

Cheryl and I visited Aldrich Butte for the first time several weekends ago. Excellent Gorge views, especially facing east, and without an enormous amount of effort.

I was not able to force myself to scramble to the top of this outcropping, but I made up for it a bit later by bushwhacking to the top of nearby Cedar Mountain for more great views.

Grotto Falls

Grotto Falls, which plunges 100+ feet along Emile Creek east of Roseburg, is one of the many waterfalls that Cheryl and I visited over Memorial Day weekend. (Also see her side study.)

It requires a long drive (including 6+ miles on gravel roads with some absolutely hideous "scenery") and a short (0.3 mile) hike. And it is absolutely worth the time and effort. Directions can be found at the Thundering Waters site.

This is one of the many waterfalls that Cheryl and I visited over Memorial Day weekend. (See her horizontal study.) The Forest Service finally rebuilt the trail after it was damaged two years ago.

As Cheryl points out in her description, the vantage points are limited. Basically you get to the viewing platform and decide whether you want to shoot horizontal or vertical, and how much of the columnar basalt you want to include in the frame. There is no good way to include more of the upper tier in the shot. However, these limitations should not stop anyone from visiting this unique waterfall.

I also shot this video for your viewing/listening pleasure.

I have wanted to see National Creek Falls in person for a long time, and it did not disappoint. It's only 40 feet high, but sublimely beautiful.
