I´ve just finished a 9 day work week at the hospital and today was my first day off, so what better way to celebrate freedom than to grab my bike and spend a whole day shooting photos of everything I came across. This shot was from a couple of months ago because I really just got back from hunting in Amsterdam.

Durgerdam is a small Dutch village just outside Amsterdam and is a nice representation of what a Dutch village on a dyke looks like. Durgerdam is only about 7 km from the city centre and can be reached by car, bus or the best way by bike. There are only about 430 inhabitants but Durgerdam has some lovely restaurants.

This shot is actually 6 shots merged into one, I didn´t hold the camera horizontal but I shot the 6 shots vertically and merged them that way.

This is a photo that I took about two years ago and I had forgotten about it until I came across it.
I used a piece of paper with a lot of colors on it as background and I used a sponge to create a thick water drop to get all the colors of the rainbow in the drop.

We have been having so nice weather here in Amsterdam these last few days and especially at night. The few clouds that were visible during the day time completely disappear when the sun has set, leaving a clear blue hour sky and because it summer it also last for a long time.

The building that you see here is the Music Building on the IJ. The music building is a concert hall for contemporary classical music on the IJ in Amsterdam and it´s a ten-minute walk from Amsterdam Central station.

This is a shot of the Sint Nicolaaskerk (Church of St. Nicholas) in the heart of Amsterdam, taken from the bridge connecting the Nemo building with the central train station of Amsterdam.
Officially the church was called St. Nicholas inside the Walls, i.e. the oldest part of the Amsterdam defence works.
The facade is crowned by two towers with a rose window in between. The centre of this window is formed by a bas relief depicting Christ and the four Evangelists, made in the Van den Bossche and Crevels workshop in 1886. A sculpture of the patron saint of both the church and the city of Amsterdam was placed in a niche in the upper section of the gable top. The well-known sculptor Bart van Hove (1850-1914) made the sculpture in 1886. The crossing is articulated by a large octagonal tower with a baroque dome and lantern and crowned by a cross.
The basis of the ground plan is the scheme of the classic three-aisled cross-basilica, i.e. a nave, two aisles and a single transept. The choir is located as is usual, at the end of the nave. In the corners formed by the transept and the nave, two chapels are located, traditionally devoted to Mary and Joseph.
Inside the newly renovated church, a 19th century Sauer Organ can be found, on which concerts are given and mass is accompanied.
The church is still a very active parish, which serves the city centre. It boasts 3 choirs, 2 of which sing choral evensongs every Saturday at 5pm.

Ok, i´m a bit out of season posting this photo of crocuses on Flickr. These beautiful flowers have long been gone and I have to wait until next spring to enjoy the sight of them. This photo was shot in Amsterdam near the Amstel – Park (see the map). There are so many spring flowers in and around the park and it is well worth the visit If you are ever in the neighbourhood at spring time.
Trivia:
The financial community sometimes refers to companies or economic sectors that rise early after an economic downturn as "crocuses" in reference to the flower's ability to thrive in the late winter or early spring.

The universe is a highway and I want to ride it all night long.
Man it´s been a long-time since I made a star trail photo and I got off easy with this one. The star trails you see here were made from my bedroom window, so while my camera was working hard I was watching Star Wars - Revenge of the sith.

I promise I’ll put more effort in my next star trail. Hope you´ll enjoy this one.

We had some awesome weather here in Amsterdam today and the tourists on this channel boat where very lucky indeed to pick this day to do some sightseeing.

Channel cruises like this one is a fantastic way to seen all of the wonderful sight Amsterdam has to offer and I can recommend it to anyone, having done a couple of them my self .

Facing the wind / Crystal Ball

A few weeks ago a contact of my FaceMePLS’
posted a comment on this photo with a challenge. His challenge for me was to capture some thing in my crystal ball that has anything do with modern Dutch. So that’s why I captured this wind turbine in my crystal ball. Everybody knows that windmills are typically Dutch so a wind turbine has a relationship with the windmill but just in a modern fashion.
I don’t know if I completed the challenge, that’s for my contact to decide.

Sail is at its end and the tall ships left Amsterdam today to go to Ijmuiden and then to different destination, maybe to a port near you.

Tall ship info:
The KRI Dewaruci is a Class A tall ship owned and operated by the Indonesian Navy. She is used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet. The Dewaruci also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the country of Indonesia to the rest of the world.

Water madness at SAIL Amsterdam 2010

WOW!!!! It’s really great to live in Amsterdam right now. It’s like queens day but then 4 days in a row. It really gives me a great feeling; to bad it’s only ones every 5 years.

We had sail in yesterday and I decided to take my bike and cycle about 25 km (there where to many traffic jams). There where really a lot of people there, on the shore and on the water. There where so many boats there that they where fighting to get a good spot and the people on the shore drew the short stick unfortunately, so I decide to go to the center of Amsterdam where I climbed a bus booth and I got this shot.

Sail Amsterdam 2010

Sail 2010 is about to start. The tall ships will arrive on the 19th of August 2010 in Amsterdam and I’ll be there. I just finished my nightshift at the hospital so I’ve got the next 4 days free.

About SAIL Amsterdam
SAIL Amsterdam is a large maritime manifestation held every five years in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its Eastern harbour, and people can then visit the ships for four days (free of charge).
The event was organized for the first time in 1975 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam, under the name 'Sail Amsterdam 700'. At that time, interest in tall ships, which had sunk to a low since the 1930s when the last commercial tall ships had been built, was starting to rise. The success of Sail Amsterdam 700 led to the establishment of the Stichting Sail Amsterdam (SSA, Foundation Sail Amsterdam).
Sail is one of the largest maritime manifestations in the world, and the largest event of any kind in the Netherlands. Tens of tall ships and hundreds of other historical ships are involved. Numerous other ships and boats are present besides the participating ships, amounting to 8000 boats in the 2000 edition.
Lesser events take place during the festival, involving small sailboats, sailor choirs or re-enactments of naval battles. The Sail In or Parade of Sail on the first day attracts many other small ships, including creations like a sailing organ (with trumpet accompaniment) or a train converted to a ship. On the next to last day there is a naval pageant and on the last day the 'Sail Out'.

I just got home from a whole day of shot and as you can see, I brought my Crystal ball with me. To be honest, I never leaf home without it. I took this shot just a few hours ago while I was cycling from Amsterdam to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel (translated this means) old church at the Amstel (Amstel is a river). The weather was perfect and the wind wasn’t blowing too hard. This isn’t the only Crystal ball shot I made today. I’ve tried to capture some Dutch scenes in my Crystal ball both classic and modern scenes and I’m trying to expend trough out The Netherlands, taking my Crystal ball to different cities locations. So if anyone as any suggestions please tell my and how knows, I might just capture it in my Crystal ball.

Enter the twilight zone – star trail video time lapse

It took me a few days but I finally finished my little star trail project. This is the same shot as my previous post with only one small difference, the stars are moving and they are leaving there trails behind.

I had to make 99 different star trails to get this result. I started with 1 shot, than I combined shot 1 with shot 2 and after that I combined shot 1 and shot 2 with shot 3 etc, etc, etc….. Until I reached shot 99. I did some calculations and it took me in total about 16.5 hours to create this movie. Crazy isn’t it. This is a time lapse shot. The movie lasts for a bout 10 seconds but it shows about 50 minutes of real time. I would love to create a time laps shot of about 2 hours, that would be so cool. Unfortunately that would take me twice as long to finish so I would be doing that this time soon.

My hands where itching to try out some star trail shot. The weather wasn’t too good the last week so I had to wait till the weather cleared up. I was going for an exposure of about 2 hours but there was too much condensation on my lens so I only got about 50 minutes. I’m trying out something new with star trails but this takes a long time to create but I hope to have it finished tomorrow, I’ hope it works out the way I hope.

I took this shot during the channel boat parade that the city of Amsterdam organized for the Dutch (orange) soccer team for reaching the second place at the Fifa World Cup 2010. It was an amazing party and I had a lot of fun. This shot was taken just before the boat with the players arrived and as you can see the people where ready for them. Oranje boven!!!!! (Translated: Orange above all)

I took this shot only a few hours ago. Here I was cycling back home from the big party we had in Amsterdam. The Dutch (orange) soccer players were being thrown a big channel boat party by the city of Amsterdam. When I saw black smoke in the sky, I thought that this would be a great chance to see if I had some photojournalistic skills and made a couple of shots. This photo is stitched and is originally three shot merged into one.
