Another lighthouse shot

Apologies for another shot of the lighthouse at Newhaven but with clouds like this I thought I would share it.

Two handheld shots blended in Photoshop to reduce the bright skies whilst keeping the foreground.

Luckily Photoshop did a great job of auto aligning shots otherwise I would of been in trouble especially with the lighthouse curving.

Previously un processed shot posted straight from camera. I do like this feature on the Canon 6D as you can upload any RAW image taken on the camera straigh to your phone and then send it anywhere.

Lightened the foreground and boosted the contrasts and saturation and finally some sharpening.

Snow showers at Fidra

First proper outing with the Canon 6D and very happy with the usability. Still need to sort out my lenses before making a final judgement. The Canon app is just great too with live view shooting and image download to phone even from a RAW (processed in camera) which can then be uploaded or e-mailed instantly.

Was freezing cold with snow showers and a strong wind down at Yellowcraigs Beach with the sun lighting up the snow clouds. Totally missed a cracking sunset as went to Hailes Castle and was in too much of a dip to get the dramatic sunset.

Taken with the B&W ten stop at a high iso to capture the water movement and just one expsoure with no grads so foreground has been lightened by bringing out the shadows in the RAW conversion.

Noticed the iso performance appears to be better on the Canon than the D600 especially beyond iso 1600.

My first proper day down the coast since getting the new camera and still struggling with filters despite being pleased with the result here.

On top of the lack of Live View with filters on I found out that bulb mode does not give you any indication of time elapsed on the camera. Both things make my life shooting LE's much harder.

Also had the pleasure of bumping into Stuart Low who was down here too getting into some tricky spots so looking forward to seeing what he gets. Sorry for giving you a fright Stuart! www.flickr.com/photos/54191867@N02/8437122269/in/photostream

Not been out shooting for ages and been trying to get an uncluttered view of the lighthouse. My wide angle wasn't doing it so tried my new 16-35mm lens.

To get the tides and sky to cooperate took several attempts so pretty chuffed that managed it in the end.

I might clone out the people on the right as a bit distracting but not easy to do with the fence

Cramond Marker

Went down to Cramond last week and the tide was still too high for the defences and the sun too far round and spotted this marker that I thought would be a great subject.

It's nice to get some good light and this night certainly had it.

Just got a separate and bigger monitor for my Laptop so hopefully will aid my processing. The colour balance looks so different so not sure how this looks to others; but after working on laptop all the time it certainly seems to be an improvement

Quite a stormy day down at North Bewick and haven't been down here for a while. It was hailing and raining at times during shooting so was an experience just trying to get a clean shot. Just spotted horizon is slightly squint..

Was down with Graham Stirling and I went for the LE version as per usual, but the short exposure and waves made for a more interesting shot-

Saw the Aurora last night in Melrose but by the time I got the camera out the clouds had come in and only a faint green glow remained

Packing up my bags and going back to Edinburgh for a new job so really pleased with this.

Posted this shot of the pier before in landscape and decided to post this version as my office will be very close to this place.

Shame there is so much clutter in the distance as an open sea would be preferred. Always Photoshop though..

Scotts View - Colour

Been sussing out this spot for a while and finally found the comp as its quite a bit lower than the classic stop the car and shoot location. Sadly most of the snow we had has gone but a light dusting still on the hills.

Again very tricky lighting with the sky going full pelt and the light on the water and then dark in the middle. Two exposures blended manually to hopefully get the best of both. Going to clone out the branch on the left as its bugging me a bit..

Will revisit this spot on a summers day with the light from behind and some nice fluffy clouds as I think will be the perfect lighting.

Got a mono that will post later.

Leaderfoot Bridges

Now residing in Melrose in the Scottish Borders - 40 miles from the sea :(

Finding landscape shooting very tricky and challenging with large variations in light across the image I feel I can only do HDR to bring out the details. Hats off to all those landscape photographers as seascapes are loads easier. Sky seems to be more yellow on Flickr as was more orange on my PC..

Berwick Viaduct

Another viaduct this time at Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Very vivid sunset and extreme light from left to right meant I had to make an HDR as the usual twin exposure wouldn't work. I even put the grad diagonally across to try and resolve.

1 second exposure at F16.

Maybe the mono isn't as strong due to the mist knocking out the contrast so here's the colour version.

A quick grab shot on the way to work on Friday morning when it was misty.

Handheld 3 shot pano of Leaderfoot Viaduct near Melrose.

In hindsight I wish I had used the tripod to get a lower ISO shot, but it was really misty and only managed to pull out details through processing as didn't think it would work out.

Will try and do more landscape stuff as surrounded by hills now. You have to take into account that sunset is earlier as the hills block a lot of light than being down the coast.

Weather has been pretty bad all weekend but was liucky with the mist

Another from my fav rock down this way.

Some weird colour in the skies with a line of pink on the horizon and blue clouds.

Managed to get down after work and was taken about 20 mins after official sunset.

Spital Break

Went down last night to catch the sunset, but there was none to speak of. Meet up with www.flickr.com/photos/silver_rainbow/ so thanks for the company.

Still can't get down to the beach after work yet but it won't be long.

Some harsh conditions with a heavy shorebreak and very difficult to get the exposure right. Found an additional piece of wood for some foreground interest.

Quite pleased with my first shot. Quite often find that either the first shot or the last is the best one of a session.

I have been seeing some great shots from St Monan's so had to see for myself.

Couldn't find the jetty for ages as its not visible from the town.

Brassic at the Braes

A very cold morning at Glennifer Braes near Paisley. This was taken in only light from the city as woke up Friday morning to another snow dump and decided to head out before work.

I think the water was partially frozen hence the weird reflections and darker water.

So much colour cast meant mono was the only option. I took quite a lot of shots and thought I had a few crackers but pretty much all had bad banding and not sure why but could of been lens fogging and never checked at the time.

I know at some isos the Canon 7d can have some banding, but could of been the cold foggy conditions.

Looking mild for Christmas so thought I would post another snowy mono shot.

Reflections on the Braes

Another shot from Glennifer Braes last weekend where it was beautifully calm once the dog owner had stopped throwing tennis balls into the water....

Two exposures blended together as the foreground was very dark.

The midges were out in force too as got bitten just where my tee shirt was hanging out.... I thought the buggers would be away by now

Two shots stitched together of Gosford Bay looking towards Edinburgh.

I tried shots on the beach but couldn't seem to find a good comp and I think the wider view is better with all the pools of water.

Have a good Easter break. Unlikely to get out much with the camera as its kids time.

Just provided 8 images to East Lothian Council to be used for promoting East Lothian as a holiday destination so chuffed to be chosen to do so. Not a financial transaction I must add but hopefully some promotion.

Was down at Ocean Terminal shopping and decided to visit this location.

Its a tricky place to shoot as has a lot of distractions especially on the horizon. There is an Anthony Gormley statue at the end of the pier but the the wide angle doesn't really show it..

Would like to revisit at sunset and try another take on this location, but will post a less cluttered version in portrait later on.
