Taking pictures of these priceless relics displayed at the San Agustin Church Museum is strictly forbidden. The guard and the signs said so. But it was only me and Bulan. I could not resist the chance. I did not use the flash though.

Clockwise from upper left corner: an 18th century wooden retablo/altar as the centerpiece of Luis Ma. Araneta’s ivory collection at the Sala Recibidor; the original retablo/altar of the San Agustin Church made in 1650 by Juan de los Santos now displayed at the old sacristy; the present retablo/main altar of the San Agustin Church, and; the retablo/main altar of the Aranetas’ Pagrel Collection at the sala profundis of the old refectory.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. A year after the first Christian settlement in Manila was established in 1571, a a makeshift church of light materials was built in what is now Intramuros. This was razed by fire during Lim Tao Kien’s (i.e. Limahon) raid of Manila in 1574, immediately rebuilt, and again razed by an accidental fire during the funeral rites for Governor-General Gonzalo Ronquillo in 1586. Another church was built that was again destroyed by fire in 1585. Finally, a stone church was built in 1587 and in 1861, the church compound was expanded. It suffered damages in the 1863 earthquake, in the 1880 earthquake when one of its bell towers was torn down, during the 1898 Philippine Revolution, and during World War II. It is the only church in Intramuros that survived the battle for the liberation of Manila from the invading Japanese. The church underwent repair and restoration works in 1969 and 1976, respectively. Today, it is the oldest extant stone church in the Philippines.
The Cathedral Basilica of La Imaculada Concepcion, more popularly known as the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral, started as a church of light materials built in 1571. This was replaced by another structure that was probably built in 1581 and later declared as a cathedral. The church was damaged by a typhoon in 1582, repaired, razed by a fire in 1583, replaced by a stone structure in 1592, and destroyed during the earthquake of 1600 before it was finished. Over this, another church was built in 1614 that was again destroyed during an earthquake in 1645, replaced by a magnificent structure that was built in 1653, and destroyed again in the earthquake of 1863. Another cathedral was yet again built over the ruins in 1871 that was again damaged during the 1880 earthquake, destroyed during the Battle of Manila in 1945, and rebuilt in 1954.
The ecclesiastical mission of Bacoor was established in 1752 and administered by the secular clergy who probably had the first parochial buildings built. In 1872, Bacoor was handed to the Augustinian Recollects then back again to the secular clergy. Fr. Mariano Gomez of the GOMBURZA Martyrs served as a parish priest of the church for 48 years. I took this shot of the church on a mid-afternoon and again forgot to wipe the UV filter. Read my blog entry on the Bacoor church at A Letter From South Africa in "Shooting Churches, Eating Noodles".

The Jesuits built the first church between 1618 and 1629. This was probably replaced by another church that was built by the Augustinian Recollects at around 1686. The church was destroyed by a typhoon in 1779 and relocated to Toclong where another church was probably built. Not long after, the church was again moved to its present site.
The University of the Philippines’ Church of the Holy Sacrifice is the first circular and thin-shell domed chapel in the Philippines. Its construction was spearheaded by UP Chaplain Fr. John Delanney (SJ) in 1955 following the design of National Artist for Architecture Leandro V. Locsin. The chapel is a treasure trove of art work contributed by the following renowned Filipino artists: the murals of the Stations of the Cross by Vicente S. Manansal with Ang Kiukok, the crucifix and the altar by Napoleon V. Abueva, and the floor mural on the River of Life by Arturo R. Luz. The monument to the GOMBURZA martyrs on the right was a recent addition.
The central location of the main altar and the hanging back-to-back crucifix is among the unique features of the UP Chapel.
