Green Heron Visits

I'd only seen a green heron here once before and was hoping to get a better shot. I saw one fly by a few days ago but it didn't stop. As I was standing on the boardwalk over the wetlands looking at some ducklings, this heron flew into view. I thought, stop and land, and it took a few more wing flaps before landing on some downed wood by the side of the water. Unfortunately, it was a bit too far away for a shot so I marked the location and walked over there. I didn't see the bird, so I just waited, hoping it would come into view as it fished. After a few minutes, it moved and I got some shots of it behind some branches. After a few more minutes, it jumped to a log that was in full view and I managed to get a mostly unobstructed view of it fishing.... Very good luck....

At least I hope it's a green water snake. It looked like the species ID photo at Circle B Bar Reserve, though it doesn't look too green to me.... Anyway, it was kind enough to let me take pictures as close as I cared to and I finally got one with the tongue out...

I could just set down by the side of the Anhinga Trail and photograph these little herons fishing as long as I wanted to -- they didn't seem to pay any attention to the people watching or passing by.

Wikipedia: Green Herons are intolerant of other birds when feeding and are not seen to forage in groups. They typically stand still on shore or in shallow water or perch upon branches and await prey. Sometimes they drop food, insects, or other small objects on the water's surface to attract fish, making them one of the few known tool-using species.

Family Halictidae - Sweat Bees

Besides metallic green, sweat bees have some stylish black species (any ID help would be appreciated). Best in large size on black to see the detail here. The flower is butterfly milkweed.

Love hurts.... when a beetle boy has that loving feeling and his beetle girl runs to catch a bug to eat.... Well, females are better at multi-tasking..... Tiger Beetles in action -- much easier to photograph when they are both busy....

Later note: This may actually be mate guarding behavior. The bug guide describes it this way: "mate guarding - an individual remaining in contact or near its mate to prevent others from copulating with the mate. It can take the form of clasping after copulation (amplexus--often used to describe this behavior in amphibians), attendance nearby, prolonged copulation, or active combat with competitors (usually other males)." Finally found a nice green bullfrog sitting in a good spot for a portrait.... The blue tones come from the reflection of the sky in the water. Good detail in the large size, especially on black....

This plant makes nice red leaves in the autumn. I'd photographed those before, but not the flowers, because I didn't find them very attractive. But the flowers do have some charm, especially when you look at the details....

A peaceful spot by the pond.... with a wet spring, everything is very green around here...
