Each fall the incoming art class at the Tokyo National University of Music and Art--Geidai must make floats and costumes and put on a parade into Ueno across the street from the Tokyo National Museum of Art--as their 1st assignment. It happens in late August, and I'm told the quality varies each year. This was in 2004. The winning float!

A bit of Burning Man right in the 'hood

Earthdance (aka dirtdance) is an annual event at the Hog Farm. Hippies, trippers and psychedelic remnants gather for 3 days of groovin'. We can hear drumming from the trancedome (if you have to ask...) from 10AM until after midnight. We went once. This was it.

Doing an aimless stroll in Koto Ward (Koto-ku), Tokyo I noticed some small figures down a street. I wandered over and found a block-long display of home-made figures, some funny, some scary, some just kind of home-y. Part of a local street fair?
