Platanus Occidentalis: the botanical name for the Eastern American Sycamore. It is the largest tree that grows east of the Mississippi River. Liriodendron Tulipifera, the Tuliptree, may grow taller in some instances, but the Sycamore generally has a more massive trunk and will outweigh it in sheer mass. The large sheets of peeling bark give this tree an unmistakable appearance and they stand out along the riverbanks and lowlands of Eastern North America.

Native Americans valued the Sycamore and many tribes had a multitude of uses for it. Many medicines were made from the bark and leaves and canoes were hollowed out from the long, straight trunks. The Cherokee believed that fire first came to Earth as lightning striking a Sycamore tree. From treatments for cuts and wounds, to infant rash, the Sycamore was used in many ways by the Native Americans. They even made a slightly sweet drink from its sap, although the Sugar Maple was more desirable for this purpose.

The European settlers also had many uses for the Sycamore tree. It grew quickly, and had a good, strong wood. From chopping blocks, wagon wheels, crates and boxes,Image to paper pulp, the Sycamore quickly became a multi-purpose tree. It was one of the first trees purposely planted for commercial harvest

Story behind this shot is,,,,,,,,,,
Michigan has had the most WONDERFUL Winter on record. There is USUALLY 3-10" on the ground consistently during the months of January & February but, this year we have had Spring weather & NO Snow at all. My Tulips & Crocus's were even breaking ground & the ground never froze past 2" this season, never the less Ice Fishing never really happened. We have Ice Fishing tournaments all over Michigan in the whole month of February & all of them cancelled cause of the lakes never froze & were still water.
Last night & still this morning we are getting the storm that any snowmobiler has begged for all Winter.
Michigan has broken record's of mild weather for the past 2 months, so,,,,,I had to go out & play in our 4" of REALLY Heavy snow fall that has blanketed my area & give a smile to everyone out there!

Spile Drip
TAPPING THE TREE:
The flow of sap is highly dependent upon weather conditions. Flow does not begin until after a time of hard freeze, followed by several sunny days with temperatures in the 40s. The peak flow occurs early in the sugaring season when it freezes at night and is bright and sunny the next day with the temperature in the 40s. The flow will stop when daytime temperatures do not go above freezing, or when night temperatures do not go below freezing. The flow usually lasts roughly three to four weeks. While it flows, collect daily the sap, preferably late afternoon. If the trees are tapped too soon and flow does not begin, it is possible that the holes will seal over and subsequent flow is inhabited significantly.

Miltonia - Stamen Goddess

LadyDragonflyCC - >;< - Spring in Michigan! posted a photo:

So I have a story on this particular image of mine.
PLEASE READ & COMMENT
As a few of you know I have a very close friend that we go out and photograph together alot & this Orchid show was one of them. GollyGforce as known here on Flickr & Gretchen or my BFF to me.
I uploaded many Orchid shots & only like publishing a few a day so not to flood everyone's contacts shots & many not to get commented on.
So,,,,,, my BFF, G got her shot up on Flickr of this Orchid Stamen, (( IRONICALLY exactly the same blossom from a plant that had atleast 30+ blossoms on it.)) If you look on the right side of the shot above, there is another face in the petal of a tongue sticking out & I should have known that it was a sign that this shot was going to get me in the long run!
G posted this shot & did NOT get EXPLORED & hit over 6000 views in the 1st 5 hours hitting the Yahoo Gallery &,,,,I NEED to stress &,,,was put into a gallery from Yahoo all in the same day! Me trying to be happy for her cause that is what BFF's do for each other & encourage her on each & every shot,,,inside I am calling her a Biotch & crying that I did not get my shot on before hers.
I love you G,,,,you know that & we have discussed how REALLY Happy that this has happened to you & I am Jelly!
Below I have posted her fame & I hope ALL of my Flickr Friends visit both of them & PLEASE comment/congratulate on her success.
Refreshment to my Senses

I sure did need this refreshment of flowers & smells in February.
I spent 4.5 hours the 1st. day & 3.5 the second day in a 30' square, glass greenhouse with 15' ceiling,,, & I tell you EVERYTHING that normally hurts on a daily basis(that includes BRIGHT Lighted areas also, Migraines) Nothing hurt!
Here i was surrounded by up to as many as 1000 individual Orchid Plants & 10,000 blossoms on all of those plants combined. The smell in this room was a delightful to the eye & refreshing to take it all into my senses.
I am not real fond of yellow blooms but this was one of the most fragrant ones in the room. Each bloom is approximately 1" in diameter. I ended up buying one that looks just like this one but imagine in Chocolate Brown color & smelling of Chocolate. YUM.
Perfect on White

LadyDragonflyCC - >;< - Spring in Michigan! posted a photo:

This particular shot "Wow'ed Me"
I like to shoot on Black to make the flower stand out but this time I decided to kneel down & shoot up at this bloom into the top of the Greenhouse & see if I could get on my camera what I was seeing in my natural eye.
Exposure 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 100 mm
ISO Speed 200

I borrowed a 100mm lens, from a friend of mine, and was not using a flash. There were other Photographers there that had Top End Lenses & Tripods made me feel a little inadequate.
But after 4 hours spent in a room 30x30 with approx. 1000 Orchid Plants I brought home 2000 shots to choose from & am very proud of about 100 of them. I am seriously thinking of printing this one.
This show is a MUST SEE for anyone with Winter depression & needing Spring refreshment!
