The other day I took a little time to take some pictures of the birds coming to the feeders. One of the most beautiful was this young blue jay who enjoyed the nuts and grapes on the platform feeder.

This adult chickadee has been actively feeding its young for weeks - constantly flying in and out of the nest with small morsels. I tried to help by putting a small mealworm feeder a couple of feet away, which they seemed to appreciate.

Sadly, it appears that they and their young have all moved on now. I kind of miss them.

Little chickadees now. Saw some fluttering of the wings when I opened the box this morning but they don't seem in a hurry to leave.

Day 10 and the chicks have most of their pin feathers, I believe. As far as I can tell, at least 5 of the 7 eggs hatched

I thought that pine siskins were like goldfinches and stuck almost solely to nyjer and sunflower seeds. So I was surprised to see them eating other small seeds and then suet on my suet log. Learn something new every day. Like watching a goldfinch eating a piece of peanut a few minutes later.

I've only seen one pine siskin here in NJ in 11 years, but I knew that there was an irruption happening this year so I was hoping we'd be lucky enough to see them again. Today, I came home to find 8 of them hanging out at our feeders, a new yard bird for me.

Saw this gorgeous green moth next to the light and rushed down to get my macro lens to get a picture of it. And the picture still doesn't do it justice.

We've had coneflowers for the last 4-5 years running now, but I think this is the first time I've seen the smaller pollen sacs. Oh, and I love that Nikon 105mm macro lens.

Actually, the chickadees have been nesting in this box for a few weeks - there are 5 chicks inside that are almost ready to fledge. Both parents have been running themselves ragged to feed the five hungry mouths.

They should have started fledging around this time but these birds were content here. They definitely notice me at the box but mom and dad don't seem concerned when I'm nearby.

They have nearly their full feathers now. From what I've read, they should start fledging any day now. They're certainly more aware - the bottom left one is looking right at me as I take the picture.

Day 12 and the feathers are coming in. I try to wait until the parents are gone before checking the box, although the parents are remarkably tolerant of me now, landing within 3' of me if I'm in the garden.

We had 3 species nesting in our yard - chickadees, blue jays and cardinals (who sadly abandoned the nest), but this was the one we get the best view of. 7 eggs - hope all of 'em hatch!
